THANK YOU. I was trying to make a 3d printed prototype of something before having it laser cut, and had no idea how to get things to line up. Very Helpful...especially since it was a short video, I didn't have to wade through a bunch of other stuff to find the info I wanted!
Select the workplane (left of the ruler icon) and then click on the side of the object you want to measure, or that you want to use as a reference. That gives you a vertical workplane. If you then add the ruler, you will see it aligns with the vertical workplane. But it doesn't need to be vertical, it can be any diagonal plane. :) To reset the workplane, click the workplane icon again, and then click on the (empty) floor.
took me a couple of shots to get me head around it but it really is easy to use this way, i am always setting up squares of holes for 2020 2040 and so on and this is by far the easiest method to do a set of holes for a predetermined object like extrusion etc. thanks for showing me the way.
well, that certainly makes more sense than how I'VE been trying to use the ruler. I've been pulling it down AFTER I get started & then trying to figure out how to line things up with it. Thanks for a really helpful video
I've been pulling my hair for the last 3 hours trying to do measuring between holes for a project, I think using this method it might work. I may just increase the size of the holes to make things easier vs. 6.7 mm wide holes.
It's actually easier than you describe, if you use midpoint and zero your square. Then once your first hole is set (I tend to set in the +/+ quadrant) when you duplicate your hole it's simply a matter of changing signs. For example, based on your design, if you had zeroed your square in the X and Y using midpoint, the first hole would have had coordinates of ( 15, 15 ), then the first copy would have been ( 15, -15 ). Selecting both holes at this point gives a coordinate of ( 15, 0 ), duplicate that and change it to ( -15, 0) and your other two holes are set.
Jason thanks for sharing and yes based upon what you wrote there are is the possibility of a couple perturbations of this as you mention with the placement of a hole or set of holes. :-)
@diy3dtech thx for the vid. How do you size cylinders when using circular array. I’ve tried using the size slide scale when editing the object but inner día. Is not equal when printed.
Great ! I wonder why Tinkercad doesnt explain these tools thoroughly.I didnt know I could write exactly the measure I need, neither to use the measurements from the centers, thanks
If you have multiple objects with multiple planes... how can you snap a ruler to the corner of an existing object? If you do that your trying to do it by eye and it always seems to come out wrong and then as you continue designing off existing pieces that error is magnified and added to with later rulers that are also off by a hair.
Very informative. When I enter 0/0 in the green locations, it moves my project down and to the left of the Workplane but leaves the ruler where I placed it! Perhaps something changed with the versions since the video was made. Regardless, this was a helpful video.
Sometimes the measurements displayed in TinkerCAD when the ruler option is selected can get in the way of what you are designing. Also sometimes it can be difficult to find and click "Dismiss ruler" option. th-cam.com/video/qUA9VSdG5Oc/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/c10pmPWT61U/w-d-xo.html
I noticed your version of Tinkercad is the same as mine that has no favorite button. I’ve tried to update but nothing has worked and cannot find anything about it. Any ideas?
How can I move the ruler by typing numbers and NOT the shape? I want to 0 the ruler on a shape and I cant afford to move the shape because other parts are attached to it.
You showed us how to use the ruler in a 2D plane making 3D models? TinkerCAD is a 3D model making tool - and you just forgot about the Z-axis. Of course this is what some people see, like @tsbrownie below, - you didn't really use the ruler on a 3D model - you used it on a 2D model.
Thanks I have done tons of things without the ruler. Now when I 've seen how easy and handy it is I will start using it more. THANKS
Your welcome!

Great job explaining this important tool in Tinkercad!

Thanks yes I was frustrated before discovering that adjustment for the ruler reference. Now for the align tool :)
Thanks, Joe. That is really good info. I use Cure all the time but never knew the ruler could do that. Outstanding. Thanks.
Stan your very welcome!

Glad it helped!
Great video on how to use the ruler!!! Helps a lot, thank you!
Awesome info. I learn something new almost every time you use Tinkercad.
Thanks! That's the reason I do these :-)
thanks, i tried using other ways of aligning things and well it didn't turn out so great, now I can save time and hair with this :)
I’ve tried using it and never could figure it out until now. Thanks!
Your welome!
Thanks, great video, just what I needed!
Glad to hear!
good work stay safe
looking forward to watching more videos
im also sharing, create , and doing alot of tinkercad video

THANK YOU i needed to add a cone-shaped hole for a screw countersink but i didnt want to use the align tool because i needed it at a specific location
WOW!!! Too bad I didnt find this sooner, I might not be bald from pulling my hair out. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for posting 👍👍

great video, I never new that either
New to TinkerCad and this was really helpful. Thanks.
You welcome! Tinker CAD is a great leaning tool!
Now, if there was only an easy way to add a 2 degree draft for making casting models.

Thanks, I was wondering how to place accurate holes.
Thank you very much! I can now move objects easily with an accuracy of 0.01mm!
I'm going to use the ruler today on a object I'm working on.
Thanks Joe, really good examples. Cheers
Thanks!
Thank you for this! No more side math to calculate centers.
:-)
Thanks, would have never figured out how to switch to midpoint!
This is exactly what i wanted to know!
Glad it helped you out :-)
Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Vielen Dank! Sehr gut erklärt! ----Thank you so much! Very well explained!
Your welcome...
Good definitely learned something! Thanks
Glad to hear it!
I'm trying to measure the distance between 2 same radius cylinders (either center to center or edge to edge) above the workplane. How do I do that?
Thanks for the tip. Can the ruler be used off the work plane to measure hole locations on a cylindrical item? Array?
Not sure about "now" however back then no but things might have changed. For that I would suggest Fusion 360 (it big brother)
@@DIY3DTECHcom Thanks!
Thanks.
Do you know how to measure from two inside walls without having to use the midpoint? Having huge issues with spacing on three walls on a 4.8" block.
Thanks a ton!
You're welcome!
How to put ruler to the center of random cylinder? Is it possible on tinkercad?
Thanks for sharing😀👍

No problem!

That very well could be, as this was made quite a while ago :-)
I’ve pulled an stl file ore made into Tinkercad. I wanna measure the slots that are made already.
Typo. Pre made.
Perhaps that was useful to someone who knows what they are doing but it was clear as mud to a beginner like myself.
You will figure it out that was the idea of these videos :-)
Thx for for this it helped me a lot Peter Griffin.
Thanks for this explanation. Tried using it before and it didn't make sense.
Glad it helped!
Thanks. 👍🏻

Great!!!

To all the ppl that dislike, u should be here...
Can I save projects as gcode with tinkercad ?
Sorry no, for 3d printing you will need a slicer or a cam package for CNC. You may also want to check out Kiri Moto too...
Damn.... I have been zooming in like a mad man to get it to line up in the corner.

This video is a bit old, however the favorite selection is still there under the pull down to the right...
Zauważyłem, że mało używam linijki.
Jest imo jakoś mało praktyczna.
Szkoda, że nie można jak w Orcaslicer, wskazywać punktów do pomiaru.

Yes you can...
@@DIY3DTECHcom how?
Is it possible I can print a chair people can sit on?
Would be so much better if you could align the ruler with your object by moving the ruler and not the object!
