  • Part two of an interview on BET's Videosoul. Phyllis and Lonnie were promoting a song they did together called Obsession. As far as I can tell no one has posted this yet on youtube. I may be wrong of course.

    I am in awe as to how insightful Phyllis was about the music industry. I think that her being outspoken and not selling out was the reason that she had such a hard time getting support she needed to be mega super star that she was. five years with no album released and she could pack night clubs and sell out concerts she had to be so strong for so long. Its no wonder she was tired. I'm still listening to her music and rebuying the cds as I wear them out. 20 years and she is still my favorite singer. Adele.... doesn't get it for me. Phyllis is the original queen of pain.

    I do deeply believe that the unfairness of the music industry took a toll on Miss Phyllis Hyman and led to her death. Music was who she was her life. A true talent a Queen in her own rite.

    • @darnellmajor8895
      @darnellmajor8895 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phyllis is deeply missed but she's not being totally honest in this instance. Just because you do things ''traditionally'' doesn't mean it'll work for most people. The music industry operates on longevity. And sometimes that longevity requires you to roll with the times. Something Hyman couldn't do down the road in the 80s/90s. So while she's has points and there, she's also gate-keeping to prevent other artists from discovering themselves. Why? Because it's likely she was ''playing a role'' the entire time until her true colors reached the surface as her music became bolder and darker to reflect her depression. But overall, success comes from knowing who you are as well as knowing whose trying to play you. Unfortunately Hyman didn't fit more of the former while doing the latter for the most part.

    They told the truth about "window dressing" perfomers. Eartha Kitt said the same thing in the 60's and 70's and it got her black balled from the industry. Well, she also confronted Lady Bird Johnson, the Presidents wife, about racism and social injustices in America and that got her basically exiled from the country. Back to the original point, music has and always will be Run be people who want you to sell your soul for a buck. Prince was the last real Artist we had in music. Independent and not controlled by record lables. Phyllis was reaching out, but no one could hear her. When you have talent and beauty, it's difficult for others to not see you as Star. And stars don't have problems! It's deeper than that, but I won't get into that here. RIP Phyllis.

    @Jeffrizel1986 If only she turned to a herbal doctor/herbalist to treat her depression but it seems that the biggest obstacle for her to truely heal was her unwillingness to shed away from her work ethic which was instilled in her since she was a child. I think she found it hard, especially as a woman in the industry to allow a man to take some of the weight off her in terms of running her business. I think the best route for her was to get out the industry and get healed naturally.

    • @TiffanyRayneOfficial
      @TiffanyRayneOfficial ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Sttephy30 We know it's the business of music, that isn't the issue. The issue is they don't push and develop talent anymore. These labels don't want to invest in and develop an artist no more. They don't want to organically work a record so that it will legitimately be a hit. These labels want the microwave hit and the assembly line build a artist. The quick money. And these labels are signing these kids younger and younger, so they can take complete advantage of them. Phyllis Hyman said this 30+ years ago. Today, they pluck them off of social media and the internet because they went viral, exploit them for whatever 5 minutes they got, then throw them away and sign the next sucker. It's not that the public don't support gifted vocalist anymore, the problem is we have to look up and dig for real talent, real musicians. The industry isn't feeding it. But that's changing now too, did you see the record sales of these current artist? Dismal🤣despite their hype and social media popularity.
