    I've landed my jet on that runway! Back in my USAF days I was one of the pilots qualified to fly the corridors from Frankfurt to Berlin before the fall of the USSR. The East German fighters would always run intercepts as you flew into the country, you got used to it and ignored them. A bit unnerving the first few times. Loved Berlin! Tempelhof was the lifeline for the West Berliners during the Berlin Airlift (Operation Vittles). I would have enjoyed that bike ride. Cheers

      How many times did you have to do that to where it didn't make you feel unnerved?

    • @gerardmoran9560
      @gerardmoran9560 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@delasoul2875 I probably did it a half a dozen times. It was a highly desired trip since Berlin was so fun. After a few times the Migs were like flies- annoying but no harm.

  • @reenation1049
    @reenation1049 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Tempelhof is not abandoned at all... The airport building is still being used for various events, the docking gate area is also used for huge events like Lolapalooza, Formula E races etc.! The main runways are open to the public - why should they be taken care of? Nature takes its space back and that's good.
    Now, there is a skatepark, an urban gardening section, a bar, a few kiosks, a bike rental shop, etc. - far from being abandoned. Tip: Take a tour through the building AND the basements.

      My thoughts exactly, I used to live in Berlin when my dad was stationed at Tempelhof. Looking at the condition of what they're calling a "park", which is basically just the runway and the fields around it, where nature is reclaiming it, seems like the money was wasted. I'm assuming the money went not to the park, but some pavilion stuff in the buildings that they use for events.

    I was in the U.S. Army stationed in Bavaria 1991, and took a weekend trip to Berlin and stayed at the U.S. Air Force Base Tempelhof for two nights it was very nice. I realized it was a huge military complex at that time and I have never seen a military airbase with such large buildings in my life.

    My father was stationed there from 81-84, he was a radar tech, and that radome you see in the background was built the last year he was there, he went to a special school for maintaining the equipment in the dome. I worked summer hire there two summers, my friends and I used to go deep into the basements, the underground levels of bunkers. That place is chock full of amazing history, there were rooms with remnant Nazi stuff still lying around, mostly paperwork and useless items, nothing of any collector value, that had all been removed or scavenged right after the war. The first area you rode your bike into, that was the main entrance for the airport when it was being used as a commercial airport, it was closed off in the mid 70's when all the civilian air traffic was flown out of Tegel Airport. My best friend and I snuck into the lobby in 1983, it was a time capsule, the place was exactly how it had been since they had shut down the commercial flights, was very cool. It was quite a place to grow up around as a teenager.
