Counting the number of turns needed to remove the outer tie rod end is great IF (and it's a BIG IF) the threaded portion of the new tie rod end is the same length as the old tie rod end! If not, you're hosed! A better way to do this is to use a tape measure and measure the distance from the side of the steering knuckle to the face of the INNER tie rod end. Don't use the jam nut, they are not always the same thickness between parts brands. Using the tape measure ensures that the distance between the steering knuckle and inner tie rod end will be the same before and after replacement.
