Matt Dillon is what I think of. I was about 4 years old when GUNSMOKE came on the air. My Dad wss a bìg fan so we never missed it when it was on Saturday night. I still watch it in reruns.
Gunsmoke was one of the most respected and appreciated T.V. western shows in American T.V. history. A major reason for that claim was the phenomenal nucleus of actors that helped bring Dodge City, KS to life. Those actors primarily led and influenced by Marshall Matt Dillon (James Arness) quickly evolved into a cult following for much of the shows 20 years history. Definitely, one of my favorites!
I adore James Arness!! Gunsmoke is STILL one of my favorite television shows. I watch **at least** one episode a day no matter how many times I've seen it/them. All the characters were good...perfect in their unique roles. I loved how each person became more comfortable in those roles over the years. I believe the role of U.S. Marshal Matthew Dillon was built on the real life of Wyatt Earp. It makes sense. Marshall Dillon was a man who lived by the law and vowed to uphold it no matter who you were. He was fair and compassionate, yet strong. And, experience made him wise and discerning so he made good decisions. I think this is why people loved this role so much. Too bad the lawmen of today are not more like him. And, I know everyone wanted him to marry Miss Kitty, but he was married to that badge that he wore with total honor and respect!! Marriage (with or without children) would not have worked for him though he could have had one passionate kiss with Miss Kitty😁! I LOVED him as Zebe M. in How the West was won as well!

I always felt as if I too may have lived in a small town like Dodge City (in a previous life) likely because of how I related to the characters on on the show. It just so happens that I too retired from a career in law enforcement however, my career was slightly different than Marshall Dillon’s. I was a slightly different type of officer for over 30 years. I also never married and am now reliving my passion through these wonderful reruns. It was a great series and I’m beginning to think that there might be many other people like us who likely also relate to these characters as we’ve described. Again, thanks for commenting and sharing about this great show!🙏

I think that if you're going to talk about and extoll him, you should get something as easy as a name right. It's pronounced "Mah KAY han." And, even though he did so many episodes of Gunsmoke, the acting and "Legend/Hero" role on "How the west was won" was actually better, showing more diversity. But, I'm a cult freak and being the "Thing" in "The thing from outer space" is my secret favorite role. ;)

Dennis Weaver did not last on 'Gunsmoke' until the end in 1975 as stated...he was replced by Ken Curtis as ' Festus' around 63' or 64'.
