CBS thanks you, I think. the shame is, TV LAND hacks scenes out of shows, which if you watch 'em long enough you'll barely notice, but it's all about greed. INSP also shows lots of 'GUNSMOKE', and recently started showing re-mastered color episodes (the B&W's were already done), but still they succumb to greed, and also hack things out. "hell and "damn," just for starters. but parts of scenes are missing.

Very much so, and I think a lot of folks who've never seen it assume it's just a shoot-em-up and don't give it a second thought, and will never know how clever and thought-provoking it was - and still is.

Saw an episode of Gunsmoke on TV Land channel and a half-Indian lawyer with the most impressive voice ever was defending two Indians who were accused of murdering a woman and said this, “Perfection makes Ideals”. "Flaws make Human Beings". Gunsmoke had the best written scripts ever and acted by the best Actors and Actresses even more. Unbelievably True.
I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dennis Weaver in a Theater Show, 6 nights a week for an entire season. He did a 10 minute bit, every night, as Chester, (wore that original hat) teaching the audience "How to play the Git-tar". I was off stage and watched it every night, and it never got old. He was a fabulous Comedic Actor as well as a Dramatic Actor. He was a gracious man, and he genuinely loved the people. He would stay after the Show, many nights, just meeting and visiting with whoever was there. We rode in the 4th of July Parade together. I still carry that picture in my wallet. He was a joy to be around. I miss him.

It's incredible how...deep these old Western shows were. No white hat/black hat nonsense, but serious tales full of moral ambiguity. This, Wells Fargo, Cheyenne, Bat Masterson, Paladin...the list goes on. All excellent, thought-provoking stuff.
One of my favorite episodes is when Matt and Chester ride out to arrest Jack Elam. Jack has them doing all his home repair chores before he is willing to go in peacefully.

Thank you, as a young boy growing up (because that's what young boys do!) I never knew Gunsmoke was so funny. The Marshall and the Doc are good friends; one shoots 'em, the other fixes 'em - a good business arrangement.
I think the comedy is lost on a lot of folks (understandably, for those who watched as children), so I'm happy to point it out. The writing and the acting were so good, and somewhat underappreciated. Thanks for commenting!
The funny thing is; I saw an episode of "Cops" once that mirrored this scene. Then Chester just stood there looking lost. It was great smart-ass remarks that real friends would say to each other. The second one was With Matt sitting outside again when Doc walks up to him. Matt said " Hello Doc, looks like you're gonna be real busy today". Doc says "really? Why is that?" Matt says "just the law of averages. You didn't do anything at all yesterday". .Doc just stands there in stunned silence. These two scenes made me laugh out-loud. The wise cracking banter between these characters seemed so normal that it could have been ad-libbed.
Those are both great scenes, and in fact, I had already included the first one (with Chester) in my next volume, which I should be posting soon. I'll try to get the "law of averages" one in there, too :) I appreciate the suggestion. The B&W seasons with the original cast really do have the best lines, in my opinion. The writers were so good and they fit so much into those half hour shows. I'm constantly rewinding them to listen again to something particularly funny or clever, and like you said, it always sounded so natural. I think that's why they tickle me so much, because more than anyone else on the show those three characters (Matt, Chester and Doc) always struck me as being the most like real people (real friends) in the way they interacted.
@@gapch4047 Me too. They were so natural with the dialogue. I think you're right. They must have improvised. I am so addicted to watching the show since I found it on INSP channel. It sucks when I have to leave for work. LOL
Back when I was a kid everybody watched Gunsmoke. With the advent of satellite radio I discovered the old Gunsmoke radio show that ran for around three years before it came to tv and was the highest rated radio show. William Conrad voiced Dillon and did a fine job but his physical appearance did not impress to carry him over to tv. John Wayne recommended a good friend of his named James Arness, who stood 6'7", for the part and the rest is history as they say.
I still do watch it....every night! I was born in 1961 so it was always on at our house. Now in my older age, I am addicted to it all over again. It was just good tv...not much good tv anymore.
@@Michaelbos Over the years, there seems to be confusion over whether or not, the part of Matt Dillon was ever offered to John Wayne. “Gunsmoke” creator Norman MacDonnell and Charles Marquis Warren, the first season producer seemed firm that the part was never offered. For me the argument was settled by a rare Wayne interview (Focus on Film-Spring 1975 issue), where the Duke was directly asked and confirmed that the part was offered to him. Page 272 of the just released John Wayne: The Life and Legend by Scott Eyman, may settle the argument and show everyone was telling the truth. According to the book, the role was directly offered to John Wayne by William S. Paley, owner of CBS (who in 1967 would reverse “Gunsmoke’s” cancellation) the part. The book goes on to state Paley offered the Duke two million dollars a year plus partial ownership of the series. Wayne declined the offer and recommended James Arness. Since the offer never resulted in negotiations and had been made directly by Paley to Wayne, there was no reason MacDonnell or Warren would have known or been involved.
Those snippets from Gunsmoke were just so great & hilarious all those wonderful actors gee if we could only turn back the clock & see them all again in Gunsmoke😪😍🤠🐎🎸
Oh Shaw, for me this was most entertaining pieces of Gunsmoke I've ever seen. I enjoy watching the reruns on TV but this is quick and very enjoyable. When I have a bad day or just feeling down this just fit me to a tee, thanks for the memories.
Me too. When I was a kid. Every time it was on. With mom and Dad. But now I can't wait to watch again and again. Thank you cast of Guns smoke for good memories .
Thank you :) B&W seasons are indeed my favorites, and I do prefer to use them in my videos. Another reason though, is I try avoid using non-DVD sources as much as possible, since they're almost always too blurry or distorted. At the time I made this particular montage, for example, the only color seasons that had been released on DVD were 12, 13 and 14.
Wow! Great collection of excerpts from Gunsmoke episodes! What a great, legendary show! It was one of my favorite westerns as a boy in the 60s. I remember watching Gunsmoke with my mom and dad every Monday night! It was a show that young kids could watch. There were so many great actors. The stories and the acting were great. It was truly the golden age of TV!
I am now watching the 11th season of all 20. I also bought all five Gunsmoke movies. I didn't get to watch this when I was growing up too much because it started when I was five and it ended when I was in Germany my husband in the military. I am really enjoying
my no. 1 favorite line is when an older friend of Matt's who was so fast w/ a gun he worked a Wild West Show, is getting old, and fearful of lesser, younger, gunman taking advantage of his advanced age, telling Matt "it'll happen to you one day." Matt replies as realistically as he can: "to tell ya the truth, I never really figured on living that long". Jack Elam as Jim Barret(an outlaw whose not wanted for anything) also warns "Dillon" of the same fate w/ age. 'GUNSMOKE' always drove home the point about mortality.
Just saw that one last night, INSP channel has 'em on a few times a day, I DVR all of them of course, that was the episode where the entire town is getting robbed by that gang.
I watch reruns of this show all the time and just came across this video. Another good line Matt said when Chester asked him when he was returning from his trip to Hayes City........"Chester, you'll know that I'm back when you see me."
You know you think you know the script by heart but then when you're in the middle of eating, and something is said on Gunsmoke that just about sends your dinner across the room because you're laughing, and it's usually when I'm tired and overly Goofy but the other night during a show or maybe in your clip someone probably Chester asked Matt, "guess who's back in town!" And Matt immediately replied, "I don't even know who left." I don't know why but that absolutely cracked me up; still does. Brilliant writing.
Near as I can figure, Marshal Dillon was shot 56 times, but I’ve heard the count could be higher. My figure includes: eight shots in the left arm, six in the left shoulder, four in the left side, one in the left leg, five in the right arm, five in the right shoulder, six in the right side, three in the right chest, four in the right leg, three forehead grazes, five in the back and several creases. The poor marshal was also knocked unconscious 29 times, stabbed three times and poisoned once. That’s a lot of blood loss!
I still love this show. Chester, played awesomely by Dennis Weaver was the funniest charactor. I remember watching this show. The whole family would join together (in front of that old console TV set) to watch "Gunsmoke". My Dad loved Westerns, we watched nearly all of them. No one had cell phones, laptops, nor tablets. We survived without them back then. 💖
No joke..yes...i know....we lived w Grandmom..Mom Kim & I ..was house Mom grew up in...GREAT memories..All the great shows eating our Col Sanders Chicken on Tv trays.....
My all-time favorite episode is "The Gallows." and the final scene where Matt Dillon walks away from a man (Jeremy Slate) that was going to be wrongfully hanged. His reaction that he could not do anything about it is totally awesome Arness. It was probably the only time he was going to let a prisoner get away, but his friend that saved his life refused to allow Dillon to break the law.
Jeremy Slate could play a ridiculously decent human being, or a nasty, no remorse killer. you're right about 'the Gallows'. maybe Slate's best appearance. he just keeps appearing when he could be disappearing. Dillon actually wants him to vanish. he did actually let accused killers get away, very rarely. 'the Gallows' reminds me a bit of 'Tom Horn' .because the defendant didn't protest his condemnation nearly enough. a clear miscarriage of justice. Dillon's word should always be heeded by judges.
Whenever you watch The Classic Episodes , from the mid 1950 ' s , You will notice , that the more intense the opposition , Chester never ever bailed out on Matt , even in the most dangerous situations .
CHESTER had been in the civil war and was no punk, notice every episode where he carried a rifle,he was a sharpshooter in the war,few knew that, chester backed matt all the way, just like festus did,a man like matt makes a sidekick grow a pair, even when nothing else did, that's what instills bravery in people ,just one solid rock person, and people follow and live right, right beside them, its the way of it
They never really said, but it's kind of applied in the civil war is how he got his knee blown out. of course, they just put a brace on which is why he could never bend his knee on his right leg again. He may have not been as smart as Matt, but he sure backed him when Matt needed it.
If you put together another one, there is a good line in season 6, episode 6. A couple guys in a bar are harassing Matt and say they are going to teach him a lesson. He knocks one out and knocks the other one down. When the guy thinks about going for his gun, Matt says "Anything else you wanna teach me?"
After Chesters's bride to be took off with their savings, leaving him in the lurch, and he gamely made some coffee and tried to shrug it off, was a very heartfelt touching scene.
It sure was. I actually included it in a video I made for our Facebook page for Dennis's birthday, or maybe it was the anniversary of his passing. I keep meaning to post the video on here, too, so I thank you for the reminder.
Gunsmoke is my favorite show then M.A.S.H. and Emergency! I watch these shows every time I am at the fire department. Rescue Me and Justified are on that list of favorites
Kitty: he's probably just coming to get out of the sun. Matt: no...Chester, you looking for me? Chester: no, I just came to get out of the sun. Kitty: LOL!! Kitty: I run a law-abiding business. Doc: yeah, the law abides in here a lot. Me:😁❤️
That was just great. So many wonderful retorts and quips. Thank you.

I still do watch it....every night! I was born in 1961 so it was always on at our house. Now in my older age, I am addicted to it all over again. It was just good tv...not much good tv anymore.
John Wayne was never asked to do gun smoke, this is from his lips. They knew Wayne would never do a TV series.
6'7"? Dang
I love that when Chester through the water out the door and it looked like someone got wet outside😂
One of my all-time favorite scenes. Dennis was a brilliant actor, and JA's reaction to him is equally entertaining.
Hilarious!
I grew up on Gunsmoke and I was too young to appreciate some of the clever remarks and repartee.
It really is a joy to watch through adult eyes, and truly appreciate the writing and acting.
Those snippets from Gunsmoke were just so great & hilarious all those wonderful actors gee if we could only turn back the clock & see them all again in Gunsmoke😪😍🤠🐎🎸
lol, some HILARIOUS lines!...don't sleep on chester, he's s deceptively witty. 🤣🤣🤣
also, kitty is *so fine.* 😍
Oh Shaw, for me this was most entertaining pieces of Gunsmoke I've ever seen. I enjoy watching the reruns on TV but this is quick
and very enjoyable. When I have a bad day or just feeling down this just fit me to a tee, thanks for the memories.
Aww, thank you so much for saying so, David. I appreciate that, I really do. You made MY day!
Gun smokes the best program around
Me too. When I was a kid. Every time it was on. With mom and Dad. But now I can't wait to watch again and again. Thank you cast of Guns smoke for good memories .
This was a whole lot of m childhood. 50 years later and it still is a great memory of mine
Love this show it has become one of my favorite never miss an episode
Best show to ever be televised, no competition.
Still a fine show to watch, all these years later, 2024.
Loved it! Also noted vast majority were from b&w episodes. As a group they are my favs too.
The stories and the acting were
great. It was truly the golden age of TV!
James Arness' ability to deliver funny lines has often been overlooked & underestimated. He was great at it.
I am now watching the 11th season of all 20. I also bought all five Gunsmoke movies. I didn't get to watch this when I was growing up too much because it started when I was five and it ended when I was in Germany my husband in the military. I am really enjoying
Great video, Gunsmoke is my all time favorite show, 20 season's of great scenes.
I liked all his movies of James arness
i'm 71,grew up watching this and many other westerns,loved them all,born 1949
"The law is the law. And I can't change it just because I don't agree with it sometimes." - James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon
I really liked those early half hour rarely seen episodes!
Watch em on you tube!
So much to say from so many superb people, and only 25 minutes to do it. Superb writers too.
" It's no fun getting shot at. "
'GUNSMOKE' always drove home the point about mortality.
thank you 'the Glory and the mud' is the episode's title, I think.
“I take my territory with me … and you’re in it”! Priceless!
If that is a small sampling, please bring us more samples. These are marvelous - they are my day makers!!!
I'm working on it. :)
brilliant writing and acting as well. really great video.
One of my favorite Gunsmoke expressions is Festus saying, "Stay in the buggy, Mathew!".
My favorite Festus quote " I'll be all over you like ugly on an ape!"
Just saw that one last night, INSP channel has 'em on a few times a day, I DVR all of them of course, that was the episode where the entire town is getting robbed by that gang.
Just received all 20 seasons on DVD....heaven.
Funny because just today I told my wife I wanted all 20 seasons of Gunsmoke in March for my 56th Birthday !!
Where can you buy all twenty seasons?
I bought my whole set on Amazon.ca
@@raymondf1000 do you remember the cost?
$265 Canadian taxes incl.....fantastic deal. Not available at this price anymore.
Gunsmoke was the greatest
Still is. I bought my Dad the entire set.
I watch reruns of this show all the time and just came across this video.
Another good line Matt said when Chester asked him when he was returning from his trip to Hayes City........"Chester, you'll know that I'm back when you see me."
This was wonderful. Thank you so much. Wish they would put the shows back on You Tube. Use to watch a couple every night!
INSP network on Dish ch 259...has episodes all the time
You can watch it on INSP
@@keithhicks3006 364 on my TV
This show had some good acting.
Pull you thru a knot hole was Dads favorite saying.
Hilarious! Oh, the great lines we missed when we were young! I think this is my favorite compilation; thank you!
I'm 70 years old and one of my grandmother lines was Oh Shaw 😁
Thanks for commenting, that made me smile :)
Matt shot in arm:
"Are you going to OK?'
"Ya. It went all the way through"
😵
HE could take it
@Les Sis Morre Interesting, I'll have to watch for that.
It was 20 years !!!
Doc didn't take Marshall's health insurance.
Love this show!!!! Sorry it had to be put away!!! Love the pieces that’s being shown .♥️♥️♥️♥️
I can agree. I love the acting, the characters and the stories. And James Arness is so tall and handsome!
My father also watched westerns and that's where I have my love of them till today.
Enjoyed the lines and scenes from Gunsmoke, alot of great memories!
I love watching Gunsmoke anytime gets me out of my downs. 💯❤️
One of my favorites, as well.
@@OhShaw Pruitt Dover R.I.P.
@@jameshoran8 If it had been me, I would have walked Away for sure. Why hang, for what? Matt was ok with it, good enough for me.
They had a lot of writers many were very young.
11:33 to the end: The wanted posters for Black Bart and William Bonney (Billy the Kid)...CLASSIC!!!
Whenever you watch The Classic Episodes , from the mid 1950 ' s , You will notice , that the more intense the opposition , Chester never ever bailed out on Matt , even in the most dangerous situations .
But he sure complained about having to be there. Chester was a half wit.
What hearty laugh miss kitty has LOL
And don’t forget you can buy DVD’s on Amazon of this show and of the five Gunsmoke movies! Worth every penny
AMAZON HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!!
Pure gold. Thank you!!!!!
If you put together another one, there is a good line in season 6, episode 6. A couple guys in a bar are harassing Matt and say they are going to teach him a lesson. He knocks one out and knocks the other one down. When the guy thinks about going for his gun, Matt says "Anything else you wanna teach me?"
Ahaha, duly noted, thank you!
Excellent video. Gunsmoke was a great show. I used to watch it with my grandparents.
Aren't you a little out of your territory Marshall?
I bring my territory with me, and right now your in it.
Oh how I love these characters! Thank you so much for this video ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm laughing so hard!
Gives me a powerful longing for a supercut of everything Chester says/does!
When Matt buys a beer and then throws it on the guy makes me laugh so LOUD!
"I'll bring you in to town, belly down on a saddle!" is a good quote.
Gunsmoke is my favorite show then M.A.S.H. and Emergency! I watch these shows every time I am at the fire department. Rescue Me and Justified are on that list of favorites
Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and the Virginian now that was television!.

Thank you.
You never know who's going to pop on these old episodes---Charles Bronson, Burt Reynolds, Warren Oates, George Kennedy, Kevin McCarthy, Ben Johnson, William Shatner, just to name a few.
Yeh, that was a good shaw ... err, show. My dad's favorite during the '50s ... when life wasn't so ridiculous.
