I watched Gunsmoke as a kid, alongside my family. We all loved it and enjoyed it for all the years it aired.
I still watch the re runs and enjoy them just as much today. One of my a time favorites and to this day, my favorite actor James Arness. Hes right up there with Clint Eastwood.
Watching the series keeps all the characters alive for me.
There will never be a better western show on tv.
RIP to all the actors who have come and gone ,regular cast members and all the character actors, never to be forgotten in my book. One of a kind show.
Thanks for the many, many years
    Of entertainment.

While special effects have improved dramatically since Gunsmoke, the cast of characters in any series or motion picture will always be the deciding factor in it's success. Gary Busey did not get shot down by Matt. His character died from a cerebral hemorrhage he got from a fall trying to break a horse. That episode, 'The Busters', was the 22nd episode (of 24 episodes) of the series' 20th year. And that episode was the last one to air (as a rerun) in that 20th and final season.

I watched Gunsmoke as a kid with my Mother and Dad, I am 79 now. Each actor has several "lines" that they often repeated. When we were watching one episode, a cowboy who had been shot was carried in to Doc's office and laid on a table. Matt was looking at the cowboy with a grim expression and there was a pause in the dialogue. My Dad said, "how is he Doc?" Immediately after, Matt said, "how is he Doc?" We laughed and laughed - you just had to be there.

In 1963 my mother and I drove from Arizona into Utah. At that time Lake Havasu was filling up. James Arness had property on the north side of the lake, but didn't have good access so he had hired one of my high school friends to bulldoze a better road. There was a small cabin on the property and Amanda Blake cooked a meal for us. They were both very cordial and down to earth.

After watching countless episodes of Gunsmoke, I only recently learned that James Arness was the very cool monster in that film. He was perfect for it because of his size. Just thought I'd drop this little factoid here.

Very interesting history. My granddad was the prop man of Gunsmoke until he passed away from cancer in late 1971. He had started with Paladin Have Gun will Travel and switched to Gunsmoke within the year, I believe, so that must have been the third season. We heard the stories suitable for kids at the time. He and my grandmother stopped by on the way back from Hawaii (to see Hawaii Five-O being shot) to check out my new college digs, but passed away soon after. I wasn't allowed up late (10pm -11pm) to watch Gunsmoke, though, but he left us all a pewter mug with a characters' name on it. A super nice man Clem was.

Gunsmoke tackled many of the social problems we have today way ahead of it’s time, it had a moral fiber long gone from TV today, Dillon was righteous in his law enforcement, yet subtle was his detective work at investigating what really happened, Chester and Festus, Doc, Ms Kitty ( beautiful even in black and white) were the perfect supporting cast as well as many others….

There was one Gunsmoke show where Miss Kitty made a comment about people that got together after 19 years. The funny thing was that after 19 years Miss Kitty left Gunsmoke. Mostly because of her physical problems. But it was ironic, that Miss Kitty made that statement in the show early in the years of Gunsmoke, and that ended up being the length of her career in Gunsmoke.

I was just talking yesterday about the great western programs that were on television when I was growing up in the 1960s. I can remember at least 20 television westerns but _Gunsmoke_ was the gold standard. I've always been a fan of _Gunsmoke_ but I prefer the earlier scripts that were shot in black and white. The storylines were grittier and sometimes the difference between right and wrong wasn't as obvious as it was in the later scripts from the 60s and 70s.
I remember a couple of those old shows where Marshall Dillon burst into a building and gunned down everybody inside whether they were armed or not. He never would have done something like that in the later episodes. Those black and white episodes always started with big, brawny Matt Dillion standing near the town cemetery on a cold windy day as tumbleweeds blow across the graves.

When Gunsmoke was a half hour program at 10 pm on Saturday night, my brother and I were not allowed to watch it. Our parents thought it was too violent and too real. Another fact is Milborn Stone was given a honorary degree as Dr. Of Medicine from I believe the University of Kansas for his portrayal of Doc. Adams.

Are you absolutely sure Arness appeared in every single episode? I seem to recall a short period were the episodes centered on Ken Curtis as Matt was "out of town". I know of one that Arness only rode back into town after Festus had saved Dodge, however there was at least one where Festus was out of Dodge and got caught up in a situation. Could be I just do not remember Arness putting in a "Cameo" in one scene of a show featuring Curtis.

Toward the end the series became more of an anthology centering on other characters with Matt Dillon often just making a cameo appearance. Kind of blink and you missed him.

I was a kid in school in the 1970s and I remember watching Gunsmoke Monday nights at 10:00 PM on channel 2 CBS. I think the last season was the best season. The two-part episode with Ben snow was excellent. So was the episode with Victor French as the sheriff who turns bad and who Matt wound up killing.

In 1985 I managed to get technical gun coach/holster maker Arvo Ojala’s home phone number and ordered a holster from him. He was much older then and had just taught the guys in
“Silverado” how to handle guns. He was a real nice guy and I asked him a lot about actors. Because I had seen the photo of him almost cheek to cheek with Marylin Monroe I asked him if she smelled good and he laughed and said she did. Thanks for posting the hilarious alternative clip where he beats Dillon to the draw. in the real one you can hear him fire first. He told me he was in the commissary at the studio in western costume and they asked him to do that quick intro scene. Later he sued the Screen Actor’s Guild to get paid for that famous scene seen every week for years.
