Here I go again. I'm back on this wonderful page to get Phillis's wonderful recipe for Bread Pudding. Phyllis is still with us as long as her Bread Pudding is on our table. She was wonderful in so many ways and our Holiday meals would not be the same without her contributions. The best!
My mom made this. She just threw it together adding eggs, milk, butter, sugar, vanilla and left over homemade biscuits crumbled up. It was always quite a treat. Phyllis' recipe looks delicious and much like one I had on a cruise years ago. I must try it. Phyllis lives on in her videos and I've become a fan of her unassuming style. Ms. Stokes, I am a new subscriber because of your video about how you cooked a pork loin in an insta-pot. That was exactly what my son and I were looking for. I then checked out several other of your videos and found them looking and sounding DELICIOUS. I can now pig-out on some great looking foods. I just watched this one on making a bread pudding with hot rum sauce and it looks fantastic. My mother used to make bread puddings for my Daddy, but I never tried it because it did not look and sound good to me ( per-teen and later teenager, I am now 72 yrs. old and open to trying foods I've never tried before). PERFECTION!!!! I made this recipe last weekend, brioche bread (dried), and I used 8 cups of cubes for the liquid volume. After I poured the mixture into the baking dish (high sided), I manually mixed in raisins on one half (one person who was going to have some doesn't like raisins). I doubled the freshly grated nutmeg, maybe a bit more, no mace, and while the nutmeg wasn't obvious, I am sure that it did, as Phyllis indicated, enhance the taste. 90 @ 300 minutes was perfect. Delicious. PERFECTION!!!!!
Oh Phyllis you have no idea how much you are treasured. My prayers are going out for your quick recovery and more importantly that your heart may be brought comfort. I'm so sorry for the hard year you have had. God bless you Phyllis.
This is a great recipe. Some ingredients I had to substitute because I didn’t have them in the house. It came out fantastic!! Instead of rum I used Irish cream liquour Did not have ground nutmeg or mace so I used allspice(1/4) cinnamon(1/2) and pumpkin spice(1/8). Only had the dark raisins in the cupboard. Plus I added extra bread crumbs = 8cups. I wanted the pudding to be firmer for the sauce. Baked at 300 for 1 1/2hr no foil. I like a browner crust. Omgosh how delicious!
RIP, Ms. Phyllis. You seemed like a sweet lady and you will be missed. Condolences and blessings to the family. Just wanted to say, I discovered this recipe a couple years ago and we loved it! Made this today and I’m in love with this recipe. My husband said it’s probably the best bread pudding he’s ever had and he makes an excellent one himself. I used 2 cans evaporated milk and made up the difference to 4 cups with whole milk, substituted currants for the raisins because we like currants better and didn’t add the rum to the pudding but made the sauce as directed. This recipe is definitely a keeper and I don’t see me using any other from now on. Thanks so much for sharing!
Dear Phyllis I miss you I needed this receipt. I know my tears are for me but you were like a friend I’ve never found in life. I thank your son for keeping your receipts available to you fans. Thank you God for her blessings through food.✝️🛐💟 🌵your friend from Arizona
Well done, Phyllis and great story on rum's Caribbean history. I tried your rum sauce recipe and it turned out awesome. 👍🏽 In addition, I added a stick of cinnamon and a few cloves of spice for added flavor.
Mother's Day Special here. Thank you for keeping these going. the Buttered Rum sauce starts at 11:10. and it really helps to sift the corn starch and sugar for a very smooth sauce. Delicious! God Bless
I made this recipe today and it was spectacular! I tried adding the pecans, and Phyllis was right. Even though I LOVE nuts, it's best with just raisons.
I love this lady! So easy to follow her recipes & such a calm demeanor! I know that she is no longer with us, but am so very glad that she left us her videos & recipes. Thanks to her family for continuing to post her things!
Thank you soooo much for your time and effort to make this recipe for us !!! It was divine!!! 🎊💥 I tried and everyone loved it !!! I only substitute the milk for all half and half and use the ball nutmeg instead of pulverized. I use rum just like you said and oooooh my Lord !!! Thank you so much.. Got your self a new subscriber !!! 100000 👍👍
Just made this Bread Pudding for cards tonight, Two weeks ago I made that 1950 Lime dessert and Now I'm really in trouble. They voted and said I am now in charge of desserts every week! I normally cook every other week for cards. Oh my gosh this Bread Pudding is so awesome and thank you for sharing all these recipes with us. I know your in heaven looking down smiling.

Never tried the rum addition...but I will, for certain! God Bless and keep you safe, and your family also dear Steven👋💗
Years ago I had a bread pudding with a rum sauce and to this day it sticks in my memory, but I could never remember where I was, I believe that this would be very much like the one I had because the sauce was the color of your sauce. I have had other restaurants serve bread pudding with a butter rum sauce but always falling short in the attempt, perhaps its because I have never tried it in the New Orleans area. Thanks for sharing
Your. Bread pudding was THE very beast I’ve ever eaten.. the rum based pudding & the bettered rum sauce was a home rum. Everyone loved this bread pudding. Thanks Phillis
I never did return to this video to Thank You for this recipe. It is without a doubt the BEST bread pudding I have ever made or tasted! Next time I buy some Rum, I plan to make it again. I'll probably make it every time I buy Rum, which means I'm sure I'll go out of my way to buy Rum more often than I usually do. Thanks!

I miss you dear Phyllis
It's 5:31am, here in southeast Michigan, and I've just finished making your bread pudding. Oh... I've also finished polishing off a generous portion of it, too, haha ;) THANK YOU for making my life a lot better by teaching me how to make this amazing dessert!!!
Thanks Liz... so many of us feel just like you do... She was a wonderful cook and a teacher of History... Her voice was soothing and her presence was reassuring. I miss her and feel blessed to have been able to learn so many of her valuable recipes.
Phyllis, I took your clue about baking at low temp all night and placed the pudding in a slow cooker for overnight. Hope to have a very sweet breakfast tomorrow morning !! Thanks for posting this recipe. I have a container of run with raisins soaking... has been for over a year. It's perfect for occasions like this !
Hello Phyllis...I must tell you how exceptionally good my first batch of your RUM bread pudding turned out. It was delicious! I had not had bread pudding in forever, mainly because not a lot of restaurants offer it and those that do do a below average job of it in my opinion. I had forgotten you said it does not freeze well and I froze some. Well, both the sauce and the pudding was still pretty darn good even after being frozen. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.
Thank you for this video. My mom was from New Iberia LA. She made bread PUDDING when I was little (she died when I was 12 so I never knew how to fix it). Ever since then I have only found 2 places that I have ordered it that it was like my mom's. I have learned to ask "do you cut it with a knife or spoon it up". Needless to say I get quite a few strange looks. I was so pleased to see you spoon it up showing it was moist and then the sauce. My mom did use whiskey sauce, but I bet the rum and molasses is just as good. I will be definitely trying yours. Again thank you.
Maureen Stevens the Louisian restaurant here in Tulsa ok used to have bread pudding with hot buttered whiskey sauce that was good! Some nurses I worked with from a hospital went to eat there. One ordered that & we passed her bowl around the table sharing it!! Lol but I think the run raisin still my favorite!
I am about to put my ANNUAL Phyllis Stokes Bread pudding in the oven. It will be a wonderful dessert for our Thanksgiving. I have made it every year since I found it here on TH-cam. Thank you, Phyllis...it is the BEST!
Miss Phyllis I was thinking about you & so I started binge watching your videos. I pray your health is on the mend. Much love & blessings friend. You are missed.🙏🙏
That looks soooooo yummy! I have a friend who has had throat cancer radiation and it caused burns; it still hurts his throat to swallow a lot of foods, but he can eat bread pudding, and loves it. I make him one a couple times a year, your recipe is going to be his gift on Christmas Eve 2019, so THANK YOU SO MUCH! It looks AMAZING! 😁🙏🏼💕 Happy Holidays!
Well, I'm watching Ms. Phyllis again and I sure do miss her. She was such a lovely lady. Thanks so much to her son for keeping her channel running. Many Blessings.
I have this in the oven right now. That's the reason I was here last week, to see what I needed to get at the store. I think it will be great for lunch today, nice and chilled. I want to enjoy some of it all to myself before I have friends over tomorrow. I really enjoy watching your videos while waiting for the recipe to bake. It also keeps me from falling asleep and burning the house down when baking late at night because it is too hot during the day to use the oven.
Hey there Phyllis! I just wanted to let you know that I made your bread pudding for my daughter's wedding breakfast. Holy cow, it was phenomenal and everyone just loved it! The only thing that I did differently was that I added a little cinnamon and I forgot to put the molasses in the rum for the sauce. Oh, I took it out of the cabinet alright, but I just forgot to add it. The next time I make this, I'll be sure to add it. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful recipes and your stories.
I did mine like hers today...i used raisin bread & Italian bread & 6 mini munchkins...OMG! & FOLLOWED HER SAUCE RECIPE....UUUGHH MY GOODNESS...MAY SHE REST IN BAKN HEAVEN😘😘😘IT WAS SO GOOD...
Hi bina2one, I put the bread pudding and the sauce in the frig yesterday. I could not wait to get home from church today to have more of the bread pudding and the sauce. While I was getting our lunch ready I just took the sauce and pudding out of the frig and popped them in the oven for about 20 minutes to warm it up. It might have been better today than it was yesterday. We've got 4 servings left and I can tell you I'm guarding the frig against invaders that might take my share. Phyllis
I miss you so much Ms Phyllis. I hope you are doing well. I think of you often and God puts you on my heart is a better way to say. I'm watching your videos again here at Christmas 2019 just to in touch with you. Last I heard and can't recall where I heard but that you moved in with your sister after the death of dear Mr Bucky. Miss him terribly. Heaven definitely gained another Angel.
She struck me as being sweet and a cute sense of humor...I would have loved to communicate with Phyllis....didn't realize that was possible...until too late and now have great regret I missed cherished moments with a fine Lady. Yummy left overs !
Wow !! You are absolutely wonderful. Remind me of all the famous chefs in my Fathers Texas family and my Mother and her sisters. Down home, unadulterated, nutritious food just like I grew up with. Thank you Phyllis.
Hi Phyllis, I made this Bread Pudding today and I must say it was fantastic! I had never tried making Bread Pudding before but I have a close friend who had Cancer in her jaw bone and has problems eating anything that isn't really super soft so I made this for her and she loved it. Thanks so much for this video, you made me and my friend very happy tonight. I substituted whipping cream for the half n half and used sweetened condensed milk (and cut down on the sugar you used) in the rum sauce and it was all great! I just had to use what I had in the pantry. lol
I'm really not into raisins, I plan to add dried sweetened cranberries instead. I've had bread pudding with mixed berries before and they really worked. Ok, made this recipe for a party last night. One of the best bread puddings ever, but it is so rich that a little goes a long way! For anyone wanting to make this one, don't be afraid to lighten it up a little, maybe whole milk instead of half and half, maybe one less egg or a little less sugar because this is also a bit on the sweet side. You can also add more bread as there's a lot of custard base. The cranberries add a nice tartness though! The rum sauce is really nice!
Mace is actually the covering of the nutmeg - they taste quite similar, except Mace is more delicate and nutmeg is sweeter. I love, love, love bread pudding and this sounds heavenly.
I love bread pudding. I bake a lot of bread & had a loaf of rum raisin bread. I substituted that for French. I also covered it with foil & baked slow for an hour. Thanks for that tip. Nice & moist.
I made this recipe three times and made your way the first time. It turned out wonderful !!! Nothing I cook/burn turns out. The next I modified the recipe a little the next two times in a water bath. Not a huge difference in taste. I also tear my French bread into small chunks and dry the chunks in the oven for an additional amount of time. YOUR RECIPE is excellent as is. I would recommend it to anyone!
Ms. Phyllis! I just want to say that your rum sauce was a big hit!! Thank you for sharing! I also used your same recipe to make a vanilla sauce as well for my bread pudding!!!
ive been using this recipe for years now, everyone that tries it loves it, i use a lot more rum on the rum sauce because im a lush...lol i also soak my raisins in rum for about a week best recipe ever, eveytime i make it i say okay Phyllis bless this bread pudding for me wish i couldve met you in person.
That sounds sooo good. I’ve had bread pudding with rum sauce at a restaurant once in my life. It was so good. If I get it at other times where there’s no rum sauce I usually add vanilla ice cream. You’re cooking makes me crave things. 😋🤪
Oooohhh how i miss this angel😢 ..i'm so grateful for her delicious & simple recipes & special thanks to her son for keeping her alive sharing all of the Beautiful post & wonderful memories Rest in eternal Paradise ....Sweet angel 😇 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi. I was just wondering if she passed because the video was years ago. I've been watching her for a long time. Lordy. Do you know what happened? Thank you
I watched several videos and I enjoyed yours the best. Many of the others did not taste it at the end. I loved your comments while waiting, I loved the sounds of the bread being cut, I loved the moisture of the bread pudding. You have done a great job of a home video. Part of the experience is watching the cook test it. Yum, one taste just wasn't enough, it was that good. Awesome.
Ms. Phyllis You are so sweet and so calming and a precious treasure to all who are graced by your presence!!! Please keep making videos, about life, cooking and telling of your stories of growing up!!! You really could make a cookbook and sell, because you have authentic, tried and true recipes, some of which have been lost to time, and/or changed so not as we remember our Moms and/or Grandmothers made, so, they would definitely sale!!! You can do them on computer or tablet as an electronic file and then sale them on amazon and Barnes and Noble and other E-platforms. This would mean, unless you wanted to do print, you wouldn't need a publisher that would take some of your profits which would cause you to loose a portion of your sales to a publisher!!! You would also have the option of doing 2 books, 1 cookbook and 1 with stories of growing up, or you could combine the cookbook and stories into one book!!! Much love, blessings and the grace of GOD unto you and yours!!!!
Wow! You brought memories back too me. I have shared food and baked goods all my life with family, friends and co-workers! I feel so blessed to bring pleasure to all. You were on a roll! That's my kind of thinking!
I enjoyed watching this video of Phyllis making her Bread Pudding. I so enjoyed watching her create the meals and foods she prepared. I could watch her all day. She was such a sweet Soul. She is now resting in peace with her Lord.
hey Phyllis. Love your cooking clips. They are a realistic take on how meals are really prepared in America's homes. I buy the day old donuts that Wal-Mart puts on the discount shelves, then I make bread pudding with it.
I hope we can view your recipes on TH-cam forever! You explain things so well and show the brand name of your ingredients! I don’t like to book but after watching a lot of your videos I am getting really interested and becoming a pretty good cook. So TY for taking your time and allowing us to come into Your kitchen and watch you!
Phyllis, this will now be my go to recipe for bread pudding. It's so moist and I do love rum in my desserts. My birthday cake each year was actually bread pudding with a sweet buttery lemon sauce. That is wonderfull as well. Thank you for sharing.
I miss listening to the neet little stories she had to tell while making her different recipes, she was so easy to listen to. To her son thank you for keeping her close to our hearts.❤
I love your videos Phyllis! Your website as well! You have a wonderful way of relating your recipes along with other interesting bits of information. You're like part of the family.
Hi Phyllis! I have looked for years for my grandmothers, Steamed Carrot Cake. I remember it had raw grated, potatoes, carrots, apples, and raisins, in a batter. Mom used a metal coffee can covered in foil and a waterbath canner, to steam it on the stove. Sometimes used huckleberries or currants in place of raisins. It also had a carmel sauce made out of browned sugar in a 12" cast iron skillet, butter and water. It boiled up in the pan when water was put in it. It was soooo good! I believe it is a southern recipe and wonder if you or perhaps one of your subscribers might have it? If so, could you do a video on it? Thanks so very much, Phyillis and sister subscribers!

That’s what I’m doing is watching all of her videos
Phyllis I know it's been some time since God called you home, but how I miss your videos. I am so thankful I can still see these recipe videos. You made all your videos feel like I was at home, welcomed, filled with warmth and lots of love! May you rest in eternal peace.
mrs. phyllis is really helping me today. i came out to my grandmother and she said she doesnt want to talk to me because she cant love someone like me. but i keep watching these videos and it feels like phyllis is my own grandmother figure who loves me unconditionally, and gives me wonderful food to help me feel better : )
Hailey Oh My Hailie. I am so sorry to hear this on here in regards to your own Grandmother!!😥 I have 4 Grandchildren and I can’t imagine saying that. I’ll be your internet Gran thru Miss Phyllis site! Take care and God loves you!! That’s unconditional love! Just believe in Him. Bless you❤️
So sorry. It has been ugly out there. Just keep positive.
Phillis, you are good for my blood pressure, so soothing. Love and blessings, thank you for your videos.
Lexi 777 yessssss her voice is sooooo relaxing
Phyllis I could listen to you talk and watch you cook all day! Your voice is so soothing. God bless you 🦋
Made this today and I’m in love with this recipe.
Just found this and I’m so glad. The recipes remind me of my mother’s! I love her voice especially!
Gosh I love bread pudding and that sauce sounds fantastic Phyllis. I am craving some of that. Hope you enjoyed it very much. HUGS
So happy this video is still up. I only use Phyllis' recipe or bread pudding and needed this again. Thanks.
Thank you soooo much for your time and effort to make this recipe for us !!!
It was divine!!! 🎊💥
I tried and everyone loved it !!!
Aw! That is beautiful! Lol I was voted for cooking and baking for my senior community but I am not able to make huge quantities.
This is absolutely magical! I tried it today and had to comment. Wow, spectacular. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world!
Oh Phyllis my dear girl....indeed, another viewer chose perfect word for this, your "Legacy".....all this made possible by your dear & precious son, Steven❤❤ How I love finding yet another recipe of yours, taught to us in your kind, soft spoken manner❤ I too love bread pudding! Never tried the rum addition...but I will, for certain! God Bless and keep you safe, and your family also dear Steven👋💗
I am sending you prayers ! I miss your videos and hearing your recipes. Please know you are loved
I so love your mothers cooking, it reminds me of my grandmas cooking.
My grandma and aunts cooked just like this. Good, rib-sticking meals!
I cook lots of homeade comfort foods, I made this bread pudding recipe, it turned out very good, not but a small dish leftover!!
Your. Bread pudding was THE very beast
I’ve ever eaten.. the rum based pudding & the bettered rum sauce was a home rum.
Thanks!
Tonight I decided to go back through all your recipes I am binging your recipes tonight not feeling good so this is what I’m doing I did not see this recipe off several other way I feel blessed family recipes from you, I’m so sad that you’re gone but happy that you are not in anymore pain because I know I seen the pain in your face how much you hurt, whenever I had a bad night I could just listen to your Soothing voice! I miss you dear Phyllis
So beautiful!
I was searching for a bread pudding recipe and this one popped up. I miss your videos Phyllis. Thank you for sharing with us. God bless.
You can still use whiskey instead of rum but use the same ingredients
Maureen Stevens the Louisian restaurant here in Tulsa ok used to have bread pudding with hot buttered whiskey sauce that was good! Some nurses I worked with from a hospital went to eat there. One ordered that & we passed her bowl around the table sharing it!! Lol but I think the run raisin still my favorite!
Thank you for keeping her memory alive. I miss her. I love cooking with her recipes.
Thank you for sharing this amazingly delicious recipe. It is always a big hit on every occasions. God bless her soul and her family❤
Well stated.
The bread pudding looks delicious, can't wait to make it! Thank you for sharing your recipe 🌼
I am about to put my ANNUAL Phyllis Stokes Bread pudding in the oven. It will be a wonderful dessert for our Thanksgiving. I have made it every year since I found it here on TH-cam. Thank you, Phyllis...it is the BEST!
Her bread pudding looks better than anyone's I've seen. I'm going to make it. I loved her recipes. She was such a sweet lady
I would love a cookbook with all your recipes but I really enjoy the hands on videos.

This is the best Bread Pudding Recipe I've ever made. Thank you, you Angel for sharing..🥰

Count me in, too! Elizabeth
I'm right there with you, too.
Thank you for this recipe. I have only been looking for it for about 50 years. Thank you so much.
She passed away. Yet we are left with the best bread pudding.
Hi bina2one,
I put the bread pudding and the sauce in the frig yesterday.

To cute!
Omg. I'm drooling over this bread putting. You are amazing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Blessings from LA 😋😋😋👌👌👏👏👏👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
I just had to use what I had in the pantry. lol
Bonnie Fanning sugar is not good for cancer
Bonnie Fanning if this poor soul has cancer. Truly. She should enjoy something delicious and something she can eat.
Bread Pudding is my favorite.....I will be trying your recipe ASAP
Bonnie Fanning Condensed Milk sounds perfect!
I add grated apple or chopped up peaches frozen work best ?
Mace is actually the covering of the nutmeg - they taste quite similar, except Mace is more delicate and nutmeg is sweeter. I love, love, love bread pudding and this sounds heavenly.
Not now
TFS!
Raquel Silies Thank You for explaining what Mace is! I was wondering! 😂
Couldn’t find mace so I’m using cinnamon
Nothing like a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
I don't usually do bread or rice pudding, but the way you just did it makes it look so good I'll have to try it. Thanks so much!
I love bread pudding. I bake a lot of bread & had a loaf of rum raisin bread. I substituted that for French. I also covered it with foil & baked slow for an hour. Thanks for that tip. Nice & moist.
I just love you Phyllis, when we all join you in cooking, its like a bunch of good friends getting together !!
Thank you so much for your videos..
Will continue to watch her videos as long as they are here. She was such a joy to follow for great recipes. Wish she was here still.
Can't wait to try. And you voice is so soothing. ..lol
Just Shirell I was thinking the same thing about her voice.
Rest In Peace Miss Phyllis! I will miss your videos, stories and recipes! You have touched a lot of people. God Bless You!
Hi. I was just wondering if she passed because the video was years ago. I've been watching her for a long time. Lordy. Do you know what happened?
Thank you
Look so delicious have not made one.in a long but.i will make one soon thanks for the.recipie
WOW!!! She knocked it out of the park on this one. Rest in peace Phyllis.
Awesome.
Suzann Andelin yes her reaction to how good it was is adorable.
Ms. Phyllis
You are so sweet and so calming and a precious treasure to all who are graced by your presence!!!
That bread pudding looks heavenly. I can't wait to try it. Thank you Ms. Phyllis for sharing your recipe.
Using day old donuts for the bread pudding sounds like something I will be doing in the near future.
Great idea! Thank you.
I hope we can view your recipes on TH-cam forever! You explain things so well and show the brand name of your ingredients! I don’t like to book but after watching a lot of your videos
I am getting really interested and becoming a pretty good cook. So TY for taking your time and allowing us to come into Your kitchen and watch you!
It sure looks great I'm going to try this very soon Thank you for sharing this recipe bye bye
Phyllis, this will now be my go to recipe for bread pudding. It's so moist and I do love rum in my desserts. My birthday cake each year was actually bread pudding with a sweet buttery lemon sauce. That is wonderfull as well. Thank you for sharing.
Ooo that sounds great too! Buttery lemon sauce! Gotta create one. Thank you
I miss listening to the neet little stories she had to tell while making her different recipes, she was so easy to listen to. To her son thank you for keeping her close to our hearts.❤
Go ahead and brag, that looks wonderful! Bread pudding is my favorite dessert of all time. Thanks for sharing :)
Phyllis: I don't care for raisins--could I use an apple chopped very small. Also, how about using brown sugar in the sauce instead of white?
Phyllis was one in a million , a sweet lady ,,and we miss her.
