My mom made this. She just threw it together adding eggs, milk, butter, sugar, vanilla and left over homemade biscuits crumbled up. It was always quite a treat. Phyllis' recipe looks delicious and much like one I had on a cruise years ago. I must try it. Phyllis lives on in her videos and I've become a fan of her unassuming style. It's just like she's talking to you only and just herself. I liked how she said she just put a blab of butter on her rice pudding. Sounded like something I might say. I need rice pudding to eat when I'm working if it gives me energy like Phyllis. That was another video I watched.

PERFECTION!!!! I made this recipe last weekend, brioche bread (dried), and I used 8 cups of cubes for the liquid volume. After I poured the mixture into the baking dish (high sided), I manually mixed in raisins on one half (one person who was going to have some doesn't like raisins). I doubled the freshly grated nutmeg, maybe a bit more, no mace, and while the nutmeg wasn't obvious, I am sure that it did, as Phyllis indicated, enhance the taste. 90 @ 300 minutes was perfect. Delicious. PERFECTION!!!!!

Ms. Stokes, I am a new subscriber because of your video about how you cooked a pork loin in an insta-pot. That was exactly what my son and I were looking for. I then checked out several other of your videos and found them looking and sounding DELICIOUS. I can now pig-out on some great looking foods. I just watched this one on making a bread pudding with hot rum sauce and it looks fantastic. My mother used to make bread puddings for my Daddy, but I never tried it because it did not look and sound good to me ( per-teen and later teenager, I am now 72 yrs. old and open to trying foods I've never tried before). Have a Blessed Day and remember, God loves you.

    Dear Phyllis
I wanted to tell you how wonderful your Rum Read Pudding recipe is. I served it @my Son-in-law’ October Fest. &it was a hit! The white (rum) sauce is so decadent & talk about Comfort Food...this is it. I made exactly like you did only I substituted regular raisins vs. the golden raisins. Thank you for your tireless hours of recipes & tireless house keeping us all waiting to see what’s next out of your kitchen!
    thani
Also I found this somewhere else that raisins won’t sink if you toss them in flour they won’t sink. I found it to be true. Thanks Again

This is a great recipe. Some ingredients I had to substitute because I didn’t have them in the house. It came out fantastic!! Instead of rum I used Irish cream liquour
Did not have ground nutmeg or mace so I used allspice(1/4) cinnamon(1/2) and pumpkin spice(1/8). Only had the dark raisins in the cupboard. Plus I added extra bread crumbs = 8cups. I wanted the pudding to be firmer for the sauce. Baked at 300 for 1 1/2hr no foil. I like a browner crust. Omgosh how delicious!

Years ago I had a bread pudding with a rum sauce and to this day it sticks in my memory, but I could never remember where I was, I believe that this would be very much like the one I had because the sauce was the color of your sauce. I have had other restaurants serve bread pudding with a butter rum sauce but always falling short in the attempt, perhaps its because I have never tried it in the New Orleans area. I'm really not into raisins, I plan to add dried sweetened cranberries instead. I've had bread pudding with mixed berries before and they really worked. Ok, made this recipe for a party last night. One of the best bread puddings ever, but it is so rich that a little goes a long way! For anyone wanting to make this one, don't be afraid to lighten it up a little, maybe whole milk instead of half and half, maybe one less egg or a little less sugar because this is also a bit on the sweet side. You can also add more bread as there's a lot of custard base. The cranberries add a nice tartness though! The rum sauce is really nice!

Hello Phyllis...I must tell you how exceptionally good my first batch of your RUM bread pudding turned out. It was delicious! I had not had bread pudding in forever, mainly because not a lot of restaurants offer it and those that do do a below average job of it in my opinion. I had forgotten you said it does not freeze well and I froze some. Well, both the sauce and the pudding was still pretty darn good even after being frozen. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.

Made this today and I’m in love with this recipe. My husband said it’s probably the best bread pudding he’s ever had and he makes an excellent one himself. I used 2 cans evaporated milk and made up the difference to 4 cups with whole milk, substituted currants for the raisins because we like currants better and didn’t add the rum to the pudding but made the sauce as directed. This recipe is definitely a keeper and I don’t see me using any other from now on. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you for this video. My mom was from New Iberia LA.
She made bread PUDDING when I was little (she died when I was 12 so I never knew how to fix it). Ever since then I have only found 2 places that I have ordered it that it was like my mom's. I have learned to ask "do you cut it with a knife or spoon it up". Needless to say I get quite a few strange looks. I was so pleased to see you spoon it up showing it was moist and then the sauce. My mom did use whiskey sauce, but I bet the rum and molasses is just as good. I will be definitely trying yours. Again thank you.

I made this recipe three times and made your way the first time. It turned out wonderful !!! Nothing I cook/burn turns out. The next I modified the recipe a little the next two times in a water bath. Not a huge difference in taste. I also tear my French bread into small chunks and dry the chunks in the oven for an additional amount of time. YOUR RECIPE is excellent as is. I would recommend it to anyone!

    Ms. Phyllis
You are so sweet and so calming and a precious treasure to all who are graced by your presence!!! Please keep making videos, about life, cooking and telling of your stories of growing up!!! You really could make a cookbook and sell, because you have authentic, tried and true recipes, some of which have been lost to time, and/or changed so not as we remember our Moms and/or Grandmothers made, so, they would definitely sale!!!
You can do them on computer or tablet as an electronic file and then sale them on amazon and Barnes and Noble and other E-platforms. This would mean, unless you wanted to do print, you wouldn't need a publisher that would take some of your profits which would cause you to loose a portion of your sales to a publisher!!! You would also have the option of doing 2 books, 1 cookbook and 1 with stories of growing up, or you could combine the cookbook and stories into one book!!!
Much love, blessings and the grace of GOD unto you and yours!!!!

Mace is actually the covering of the nutmeg - they taste quite similar, except Mace is more delicate and nutmeg is sweeter. I love, love, love bread pudding and this sounds heavenly.

I watched several videos and I enjoyed yours the best. Many of the others did not taste it at the end. I loved your comments while waiting, I loved the sounds of the bread being cut, I loved the moisture of the bread pudding. You have done a great job of a home video. Part of the experience is watching the cook test it. Yum, one taste just wasn't enough, it was that good. Awesome.

Hi Phyllis, I made this Bread Pudding today and I must say it was fantastic! I had never tried making Bread Pudding before but I have a close friend who had Cancer in her jaw bone and has problems eating anything that isn't really super soft so I made this for her and she loved it. Thanks so much for this video, you made me and my friend very happy tonight. I substituted whipping cream for the half n half and used sweetened condensed milk (and cut down on the sugar you used) in the rum sauce and it was all great! I just had to use what I had in the pantry. lol

Thank you so much, Phyllis. I grew up eating bread pudding made from leftover ends of Wonder Bread in the 60's. No sauce. I liked it both warm or cold. I was shocked when I learned that many used a sauce with it! Well...I'm just gonna have to try your recipe - and soon! Thanks again :)

I made Rum balls for Christmas and New Years. I somehow managed the willpower to save some Rum for this recipe. I am making this recipe today!
It is nearly torture every time I watch this video, especially when you taste the pudding at the end. I love the taste Rum gives to baked goods and sweet foods. As I'm not much of a drinker, I only recently discovered how great Rum is for baking, so I can already see myself making this pudding again and again and again.
    Thank you!
