You know what keeps them there, Poverty! Breaking a lease can be expensive. And many places want first month rent, last month rent, plus security deposit. What are the odds that 1 or both the parents lost their job during Covid & they’ve been living off savings? You think 2 people working & living paycheck to paycheck with 2 small kids is gonna have $2800 plus whatever deposit amount? Isn’t there also a housing shortage in Florida? The government is equally to be blamed, they let this all happen right under their noses. And now all of a sudden they "care" and are evicting many families with no where else to go. I bet to them this is just a new opportunity to make $$ off of hefty fines, condemn some free real estate while they're at it, demolish old buildings and build better money making buildings there instead.

This is the problem when in a building designated condominiums, the owners decide to use their property as rental units. They absolutely don't care. At the condominiums where I live they only allow a very minimal number of conddominiums to be rented out because they want the owners to live here so that they'll take an interest in their properties.

Why didn't you do something about it before the collapse in Surfside caused people to start looking at buildings? If the city had of cared in the first place instead of ignoring it this would have been corrected years ago. I have no doubt these people have complained multiple times to the landlord and probably to the city but as usual nothing got done. Nobody should live in a rotten leaking molded building. These people should get a class action lawsuit going and Sue with a pro bono lawyer so they can recover damages for what they have had to live through.

And it is sad that it took until the champlain towers collapse for something to be done with these other buildings that are also unsafe

Sometimes, when you’re poor you have to take what you can get.
