I cried a little while I was listening to this. Until now, I'd told myself (and was even told by my therapist at one point) that reading and consuming all this self-help content without taking action was a waste of time if I never applied what I learned. (I stopped seeing that therapist about 2 years ago.) Thank you for letting me know I was (and they were) wrong! Although I did gain a lot of useful tools from therapy, which I have actually implemented in my life with some success, I eventually came to realize that not everything they taught me was helpful. (This became abundantly clear when they kicked me out of the program for missing "too many" appointments in a certain timeframe. How ridiculous is that when you're treating me for effing ADHD symptoms?!) *clears throat* Anyway, I really wanted to comment to say thank you, and to to add that as someone with poor working memory, the idea of listening to and reading the same messages over and over again IS what helps me remember them and commit them to my long-term memory where they belong. Repetition is key! So I very much appreciate the reminder. And speaking of repetition, I want to repeat this: Cas, you are amazeballs (to use your term hehe) and you have helped me more than you'll ever know. Keep doing what you do. 💖💖💖💖
While listening, I’m arranging my son’s marble run sets so I can take a picture and list it for sale on Facebook. This morning I sold my son’s Cub Scout stuff. Between these two sales, that will have earned me about $75. Decluttering, earning money, and listening to Cass is a win.
I had to realize that im weird, and only a few folks will ever get me and be "my people". But... some of us are all three ...weird people, we need help with getting rid of the clutter, AND we also really like you and think you're cool. We would tjink you're cool in person, too. Not just on youtube and podcasts.
Cas, this was one of the best podcasts I’ve heard. Your personal story and your becoming who you are today is so inspiring. No self help book could compete. I have gone the self help journey and wondered why I was feeling like a failure, blamed myself for everything that could possibly go wrong, I even blamed myself when it snowed! (Just think how powerful I thought I was!)… As life moved on and each day I did what needed to be done, raised four children as a single working mom with no extra support. I was too busy doing what needed to be done to get by, and always wondered why, in spite of the self help books, I couldn’t make things better. (High IQ vs. ADHD …. They counter act sometimes). It wasn’t until I retired and the last of the kids moved out, that I could really focus on myself. I am a TH-cam junky, I have a degree in Home Economics, and a passion for art tutorials, so decluttering, decorating, painting, wire wrapping are my go to s. I turn the TV on at 8 pm for the cat, put it on mute, and binge on TH-cam. Cas,, I’m so glad you are there. Thank you for sharing your story and insights on self help. Btw, I do have a library card, read books half way and listed to audiobooks but find I don’t pay attention….. Btw, again… I did read a whole book “The Common Well” by Stephen Meyer, it was so good, I actually read it twice!…. That was a first for me! Good luck with the flood plane lake in your back yard…..in Pennsylvania people can get flood insurance, if that is available where you are, you should consider it.
I don't have friends, and it bothered me, but I discovered I like to do what I want to do when I want to do it. I know you have to be a friend to have friends. I have many many acquaintances, temporary people that go in and out of my life. That's how I want it. I'm laying down now but you always motivate me!!! Awesome info, Cas, thank you! I don't mean to sound cheesy but I have to say that the greatest self-help book ever made is the Bible. A lot of what you're saying are biblical principles. The Bible ignites the fire we seek but the awesome thing is that it doesn't go away.
That was funny and helpful. I’m one of the weird ones too and have struggled with that my whole life. Sometimes it takes years and for me it took 64 to make a breakthrough after self help books upon books. I loved them and many got me through the next hurdle etc. Life does get better, never give up . This will definitely date me, but the best, most helpful books I’ve ever read were by Don Aslett. He wrote “Clutter’s Last Stand” and a host of others.

I love self-help books. I have been reading them for decades. My experience is that they work - if you do the work. You have to realise that you have to do the work. The books tell you how and they are always there to go back to. They have really helped me.
Cas you are always helpful. Your experience has made you a strong person and you are helping so many others. You are motivational and down to earth and that's what we need and love. Thank you for this video. I listen (I love audible) to Christian self-help/inspirational books, and regular self-help books. I definitely need to do better. Not perfect just better and actually do 10-15 minutes every few hours because it matters. I have chronic pain and fatigue. If I wait until I feel good nothing will happen. As the old saying goes, "I can't, never could do anything." Plus we shouldn't talk negative about our lives because we are listening 😂 Have a great day!

I agree a lot of messages only resonate if it’s something we need at the time. I also think while it’s important to realize only we can move forward from this point by taking responsibility for our healing, growth, etc. we should realize the past may still affect us in ways we might but realize yet, which is part of the journey. ❤
Cas, you always give the tough talk I need to hear. If it was a YT Short, I'd be listening to that same "Stop! The only person in charge of you is you" on repeat ... things I know, but it's good to hear out loud. The other day you took questions, and one of the tough talks was about recycling and don't let trash hold you captive in your own home. My daughter convinced me as well, it's okay to trash the useful, or recycleables and get a fresh start. You always give me permission... like not reading the whole book. I thought I was the only one. I'm in a rut really since covid crap, and your energy helps! Keep being awesome!! ❤❤❤
Thank you for the reminder to get some of these books from the library. 👍🏻 I also check the books at Goodwill - $2.00 hardback $1.00 paperbacks. Self Help books - the drive to learn and want to make your life better in just one small step at a time. Not everyone want to admit their problems and be willing to make the effort to change. I am a person that likes to hold a book in my hand and turn the pages and put a small sticker on spots that speak to me - then I go back repeatedly and reread them which helps the information to stick better. 😁 Thank you for sharing your thoughts from someone who isn’t into talking about buttholes at the dinner table😵💫…but hey, you do you! 😆😆
I use audible because I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. Library books won't survive here, and on my phone, I can read with the lights off. I didnt up my credits, but for books that are less than $14, I just buy them. For books over $14, I put it in my wishlist and wait for the new credit. Also, I started listening to you for decluttering advice, because i was drowning, but I stayed for the weird. I'm an adhd ladybug (with cricket aspirations) and we tend to think the same on so many things. You've helped me so much. The dishes are done, the counters are clear, my washer and dryer are both empty, and all our clothes are put away, because of You. But yeah, I'm mostly just a weirdo who just likes to hang out with you, Cas. I like who you are as a person.
Listening to this and the "fighting for your home" I've binned recycled & out out for donation 80 items! Many I've kept for many years! BIG WIN for me. Remember ...life is too short to stick with a book you're not enjoying, or does not "speak to you". This is why you and Dana K White, among others, speak to me more than other "gurus" who don't find decluttering or minimalism an issue - you all understand is "normal folk"! One of the first groups of stuff I declutter was self-help books on decluttering!
I sit and listen to you while cleaning 5 days a week. I'm running out of videos. But THIS ONE! Your life is so much like mine every time you talk about your past I'm like what the douce!! I lost a ton of weight I was rowdy at one point. I was homeless. Just almost everything it's blowing my mind!! The real difference is the reason I got organized is because I found a wonderful man who I want to make a wonderful life for. I'm new to this. Always knew how never cared to. My ADHD kept me able to be blinded to mess. But caring now I watch your videos religiously. All day. Just while I'm cleaning you're usually with me. 😅 I'm the weirdo listening to you to hang out with you for a voice while I organize and I talk about inappropriate things at the dinner table. 😂😂😂

I'm going through a major life transition - in a few short years I'll be an empty nester plus I'm researching doing my final "career" being a digital nomad and finally living my life long dream. I can relate - I still struggle at moments and use my troubled past as an excuse to talk down to myself and self sabotage my plans. Love you, Cas, "inappropriate" conversations and all! Those are often the best kind! It's true that borrowed motivation from self-help books can be fleeting, and the shame hangover when I don't magically change my life overnight can be brutal. But *quality* self-help books have helped me more than any therapist! The mindset shifts really can be lasting and truly transformational. Huzzah!

I have had to do a lot f work to get where I am now - still need work, but I am finally able to declutter my security blanket (my craft stuff and fabric) and you have helped - thank you so much. I didnt finish any thing by Brene Brown, but I loved the parts in her book, "I thought it was just me (but it isn't)," about understanding shame. It resonated with me that shame has been holding me back my whole life, and it changed the way I talk to my kids and even my husband. It's worth the first few chapters anyway. I listen on audible, and im not the biggest fan of the narrator in this one.

You mentioned a bunch of books I will be checking out and several authors I've read. As for Tony Robbins... I would not pay to go to his events, either. In fact, I can't read him, lol. He's just not for me, like Brene Brown isn't for you. I DO recommend Mel Robbins, Jen Cincero, Meadow Devor, Brene Brown, Glennon Doyle... oh, and here's one: "Outliers" by Malcom Gladwell. Btw, I'm one of the weird ones, too. I'm okay with it now.
This "self help" message is very encouraging to me. Sure there are times you need someone to help you with learning things. But those are specific carefully chosen friends or professionals. There are other situations where I need information that helps. You and many other podcasts and self help books are INCREDIBLY helpful. The "friends" who push to DO certain things for you, ie your budget, do your unemployment for you, are not helpful and a horrible idea. Slow changes drive those "do it for you" people crazy. Thank you Cass for being honest. After all, normal is the wierdest!

I'm a PMHNP who has overcome a lot of stuff but you have overcome a lot of stuff that my clients only wish they could think of overcoming. I listen to you Dawn and Dana, and your right, I have decluttered some and am still working on it. So thanks these messages are really helpful. I too have audible for self help and history and economics. It’s a weird mix but I enjoy it.
People do that with The Bible. They plug their ears and say, “no, no, no… Don’t tell me, I don’t want to hear.” People do feel judged by the Bible or Christians, but it’s the same process. Growing in knowledge at a rate where you are feeling that spark to keep on. Knowledge for today and revelation of where our future lies. Self improvement is incomplete without addressing the spiritual man / woman. Consume God’s word. Gain that knowledge even if it seems a little culty, as Cas put it.

I have read self-help books off and on over the years. (Other times I have focused on books helping me improve my profession.) The two that had the biggest impact on my life were one on shyness in high school and Hinds Feet on High Places. Last time I looked for the shyness book I could not find it on Amazon. I wish Amazon would filter by author's last name because I know it started with a Z. The last few months, TH-cam videos have been my self-help gurus (including you).

I do read self help but I have to know quite a bit about who wrote it. I have a requirement of the author before I read one (not going to disclose what on here). I heard you mention keto, I slowly moved to eating keto 5 years ago and lost 50 pounds and have kept it off this long. I absolutely love keto, it wasn't just about loosing weight it was also getting healthier. Now I am thankful to have found decluttering/minimalism and getting rid of items I don't need, just like keto got rid of food my body doesn't need. The best way I have ever stuck to anything is slowly to move that way, baby steps (What About Bob?) is what I have always thought of it as. If there's a book that basically says, man up and do whatever it is...um no that doesn't work with me. It needs to encourage and guide me in the right direction a little bit at a time.
Our bookshelf has all our kids books organized in rainbow order, Home Edit style. My utensil drawer in my kitchen is grouped by size, like Marie Kondo suggested. (the rest of their advice got thrown out lol) And we have a family closet in our laundry room, like KC davis from How to Keep House While drowning. (And clothes are in bins for me and my kids inside a cabinet with doors, sorted into broad categories: "tops" and "bottoms", because of you, Cas. And unfolded, because there is zero dopamine in laundry for me, and if i feel obligated to fold, they stay in the dryer for days.) ((There is tons of dopamine in pretty shelves though, and in decanted spices and in making things look like they belong. So decanting the spices is next!!)) I also loved Atomic Habits, by James Clear, and The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, and Good Inside, by Becky Kennedy

This is probably my 2-3rd time to listen to this video as I'm (decluttering... downsizing my crafting space)...and, I gotta tell you.....that, recently....I found I was a "decluttering book junkie"😅. Back in the summer, I ordered 6 -8 second hand books on this topic ...I read them all ...and, then was sad😢 because, I didn't have anymore "new ones" to read. I am also a self help book junkie....if that book is decent and has good information....I'm going to do my best to get ahold of that book. You mentioned Julie Morgenstern....just RECENTLY bought her book, "SHED THE STUFF...CHANGE YOUR LIFE". LIKE YOU SAID ... EXCELLENT MATERIAL. 😅THE ONLY PROBLEM ...I keep having to go back and read chapters 3 and 7....because, I haven't finished my "hopefully radical downsizing in this area....many hours have been logged out here slaving away....but,...not done yet ..but, I'm determined to get there. Thank you again for helping and reminding us to stand on the shoulders of the authors who've put that information out there as we read their material. My number #1 book will always be the BIBLE. It is a message that will stand forever and RADICALLY change lives. TFS ❤

Yes to "please keep buying books!" I often hear buying books framed as a guilty indulgence or lack of frugality, but writing is a job, and paying people for their work is something to be proud of. Plus, having a copy to make notes in and refer back to helps the information sink in. We deserve that! : - )
I feel the same way about certain podcasts lately. But I have 4 books by The Slob Sisters, Pam Young, and Peggy Jones, who set up a 3 x 5 card system in 1977. It is a WONDERFUL series of books.
I started listening to you because of Hot Mess House. And I listened to all of your episodes in 3 months last year. I tried listening to Dawn and Dana (whom my sister really likes, with you almost as much). Dawn buys too much stuff for me. You and Peter Walsh I can relate to, and I'm happy that my decluttering journey is mostly on track. Keep it coming, buttholes and all!

I'm actually not in a decluttering phase in life, I've let go of more than is healthy already and if anything need to be accumulating, and decorating, I am actually in the currently needing to organize in a way that works for me rather than against me and setting up a cleaning routine that works for me rather than against me. Unfortunately it's very difficulty to find someone who isn't over emphasizing decluttering but still talking about any of this stuff. Still find a lot of what I hear here helpful.

I love all of your material, but this one had me really laughing. Recently diagnosed with ADHD (been medicated for 2 1/2 weeks). Not caring about someone's kids soccer game took me out! I also do not care about who everyone is in every single picture you show me from some event. Your cousin's sister's kid who just graduated middle school does not mean a thing to me. If you want to show me their pet, I'm there! I'd rather talk about bunny poop than the news or the weather. It's freakin' hot, and I hate it. Being weird with a warped sense of humor is my comfort place.
We tend to expect change when we do the same thing over and over again. Why would you change if you do not change anything? I see it often! I think that's where Atomic Habits is useful, just change a little thing and bit by bit you'll get there. Enjoyed the podcast!
I read Grit and much of it resonated with me because I teach a class at a university. That is the generation I feel (in general) lacks grit. Your story and mine have no lack of grit, so if you are not dealing with college and young adult-aged people, it may not mean much to you.

I used to read a lot of self-help books, but in the end I realized that my issues just weren't going to be solved by self-help books. Let's be real: how many times do you need to read "create a budget" or "don't eat junk food" or "do a little bit every day"? Sure, if you don't know anything about personal finance, then read a personal finance book or three. But if you've acquired the knowledge and aren't putting it into practice, then there are deeper issues going on that won't be fixed by self-help books. Maybe it's because the book wasn't written for people who have your sort of brain. (e.g. Atomic Habits assumes that once you do something enough, it becomes automatic, but a lot of ADHD people have told me that their habits NEVER become automatic, even after decades. Atomic Habits won't work for them.) Maybe because it's written by and for people who never have the struggles that you have. (It's very easy to say "just check your calendar every day" if you've never had an issue checking your calendar every day.) Maybe it's because there's a trauma response that needs to be dealt with through personalized therapy. (If you're a hoarder because you grew up poor and are terrified of not having what you need when you need it, someone telling you to declutter isn't going to work for you.) The things that have helped me most, in order, are therapy, community (specifically, a community of people who are facing the same challenges I'm going through and who can be a support network), and skills acquisition. Self-help books can MAYBE help with the third, but can't help with the first two.
I don't read much, period. Never have. I've always struggled with reading was even in special classes in School, .... I CAN read, and Im grateful that I can, but.... I don't enjoy it... I'd much rather watch a You Tube video, than read a book.... And each time I HAVE read a self help book, I started reading it wondering if this would be "The one" .... THE book that would finally give me something that I can use, that would change my life.... but haven't found that book yet....for most of them, I just don't "relate" or the way the book is written just irritates me, or something.... All that being said... I'm not opposed to reading another one.... if I find one that is of interest to me.... like one that would help me with "Living the moment" and understanding that concept better.

While listening, I’m arranging my son’s marble run sets so I can take a picture and list it for sale on Facebook. This morning I sold my son’s Cub Scout stuff. Between these two sales, that will have earned me about $75. Decluttering, earning money, and listening to Cass is a win.
I had to realize that im weird, and only a few folks will ever get me and be "my people". But... some of us are all three ...weird people, we need help with getting rid of the clutter, AND we also really like you and think you're cool. We would tjink you're cool in person, too. Not just on youtube and podcasts.
Cas, this was one of the best podcasts I’ve heard. Your personal story and your becoming who you are today is so inspiring. No self help book could compete. I have gone the self help journey and wondered why I was feeling like a failure, blamed myself for everything that could possibly go wrong, I even blamed myself when it snowed! (Just think how powerful I thought I was!)… As life moved on and each day I did what needed to be done, raised four children as a single working mom with no extra support. I was too busy doing what needed to be done to get by, and always wondered why, in spite of the self help books, I couldn’t make things better. (High IQ vs. ADHD …. They counter act sometimes). It wasn’t until I retired and the last of the kids moved out, that I could really focus on myself. I am a TH-cam junky, I have a degree in Home Economics, and a passion for art tutorials, so decluttering, decorating, painting, wire wrapping are my go to s. I turn the TV on at 8 pm for the cat, put it on mute, and binge on TH-cam. Cas,, I’m so glad you are there. Thank you for sharing your story and insights on self help. Btw, I do have a library card, read books half way and listed to audiobooks but find I don’t pay attention…..
Btw, again… I did read a whole book “The Common Well” by Stephen Meyer, it was so good, I actually read it twice!…. That was a first for me!

I don't have friends, and it bothered me, but I discovered I like to do what I want to do when I want to do it. I know you have to be a friend to have friends. I have many many acquaintances, temporary people that go in and out of my life. That's how I want it. I'm laying down now but you always motivate me!!! Awesome info, Cas, thank you! I don't mean to sound cheesy but I have to say that the greatest self-help book ever made is the Bible. A lot of what you're saying are biblical principles. The Bible ignites the fire we seek but the awesome thing is that it doesn't go away.

Sometimes it takes years and for me it took 64 to make a breakthrough after self help books upon books. I loved them and many got me through the next hurdle etc. Life does get better, never give up . This will definitely date me, but the best, most helpful books I’ve ever read were by Don Aslett. He wrote “Clutter’s Last Stand” and a host of others.
That was the book I first read as well, must be at least 25 years ago now!

I love self-help books. I have been reading them for decades. My experience is that they work - if you do the work. You have to realise that you have to do the work. The books tell you how and they are always there to go back to. They have really helped me.
Cas you are always helpful. Your experience has made you a strong person and you are helping so many others. You are motivational and down to earth and that's what we need and love. Thank you for this video. I listen (I love audible) to Christian self-help/inspirational books, and regular self-help books. I definitely need to do better. Not perfect just better and actually do 10-15 minutes every few hours because it matters. I have chronic pain and fatigue. If I wait until I feel good nothing will happen. As the old saying goes, "I can't, never could do anything."
Plus we shouldn't talk negative about our lives because we are listening 😂

I also think while it’s important to realize only we can move forward from this point by taking responsibility for our healing, growth, etc. we should realize the past may still affect us in ways we might but realize yet, which is part of the journey. ❤
Cas, you always give the tough talk I need to hear. If it was a YT Short, I'd be listening to that same "Stop! The only person in charge of you is you" on repeat ... things I know, but it's good to hear out loud. The other day you took questions, and one of the tough talks was about recycling and don't let trash hold you captive in your own home. My daughter convinced me as well, it's okay to trash the useful, or recycleables and get a fresh start. You always give me permission... like not reading the whole book. I thought I was the only one. I'm in a rut really since covid crap, and your energy helps! Keep being awesome!! ❤❤❤
Thank you for the reminder to get some of these books from the library. 👍🏻 I also check the books at Goodwill - $2.00 hardback $1.00 paperbacks. Self Help books - the drive to learn and want to make your life better in just one small step at a time. Not everyone want to admit their problems and be willing to make the effort to change. I am a person that likes to hold a book in my hand and turn the pages and put a small sticker on spots that speak to me - then I go back repeatedly and reread them which helps the information to stick better. 😁 Thank you for sharing your thoughts from someone who isn’t into talking about buttholes at the dinner table😵💫…but hey, you do you! 😆😆
I use audible because I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. Library books won't survive here, and on my phone, I can read with the lights off.
I didnt up my credits, but for books that are less than $14, I just buy them. For books over $14, I put it in my wishlist and wait for the new credit.
Also, I started listening to you for decluttering advice, because i was drowning, but I stayed for the weird. I'm an adhd ladybug (with cricket aspirations) and we tend to think the same on so many things. You've helped me so much. The dishes are done, the counters are clear, my washer and dryer are both empty, and all our clothes are put away, because of You. But yeah, I'm mostly just a weirdo who just likes to hang out with you, Cas. I like who you are as a person.
Listening to this and the "fighting for your home" I've binned recycled & out out for donation 80 items! Many I've kept for many years! BIG WIN for me.
Remember ...life is too short to stick with a book you're not enjoying, or does not "speak to you". This is why you and Dana K White, among others, speak to me more than other "gurus" who don't find decluttering or minimalism an issue - you all understand is "normal folk"! One of the first groups of stuff I declutter was self-help books on decluttering!

I sit and listen to you while cleaning 5 days a week. I'm running out of videos. But THIS ONE! Your life is so much like mine every time you talk about your past I'm like what the douce!! I lost a ton of weight I was rowdy at one point. I was homeless. Just almost everything it's blowing my mind!! The real difference is the reason I got organized is because I found a wonderful man who I want to make a wonderful life for. I'm new to this. Always knew how never cared to. My ADHD kept me able to be blinded to mess. But caring now I watch your videos religiously. All day. Just while I'm cleaning you're usually with me. 😅 I'm the weirdo listening to you to hang out with you for a voice while I organize and I talk about inappropriate things at the dinner table. 😂😂😂

I'm going through a major life transition - in a few short years I'll be an empty nester plus I'm researching doing my final "career" being a digital nomad and finally living my life long dream. I can relate - I still struggle at moments and use my troubled past as an excuse to talk down to myself and self sabotage my plans. It's true that borrowed motivation from self-help books can be fleeting, and the shame hangover when I don't magically change my life overnight can be brutal. But *quality* self-help books have helped me more than any therapist! The mindset shifts really can be lasting and truly transformational. Huzzah!

I didnt finish any thing by Brene Brown, but I loved the parts in her book, "I thought it was just me (but it isn't)," about understanding shame. It resonated with me that shame has been holding me back my whole life, and it changed the way I talk to my kids and even my husband. It's worth the first few chapters anyway. I listen on audible, and im not the biggest fan of the narrator in this one.

He's just not for me, like Brene Brown isn't for you. I DO recommend Mel Robbins, Jen Cincero, Meadow Devor, Brene Brown, Glennon Doyle... oh, and here's one: "Outliers" by Malcom Gladwell. This "self help" message is very encouraging to me. Sure there are times you need someone to help you with learning things. But those are specific carefully chosen friends or professionals. There are other situations where I need information that helps. You and many other podcasts and self help books are INCREDIBLY helpful. The "friends" who push to DO certain things for you, ie your budget, do your unemployment for you, are not helpful and a horrible idea. Slow changes drive those "do it for you" people crazy. Thank you Cass for being honest. After all, normal is the wierdest!

I listen to you Dawn and Dana, and your right, I have decluttered some and am still working on it. So thanks these messages are really helpful. I too have audible for self help and history and economics. It’s a weird mix but I enjoy it.
People do that with The Bible. They plug their ears and say, “no, no, no… Don’t tell me, I don’t want to hear.”
People do feel judged by the Bible or Christians, but it’s the same process. Growing in knowledge at a rate where you are feeling that spark to keep on. Knowledge for today and revelation of where our future lies. Self improvement is incomplete without addressing the spiritual man / woman. Consume God’s word. Gain that knowledge even if it seems a little culty, as Cas put it.

I have read self-help books off and on over the years. (Other times I have focused on books helping me improve my profession.) The two that had the biggest impact on my life were one on shyness in high school and Hinds Feet on High Places. Last time I looked for the shyness book I could not find it on Amazon. I wish Amazon would filter by author's last name because I know it started with a Z. The last few months, TH-cam videos have been my self-help gurus (including you).

I do read self help but I have to know quite a bit about who wrote it. I have a requirement of the author before I read one (not going to disclose what on here). I heard you mention keto, I slowly moved to eating keto 5 years ago and lost 50 pounds and have kept it off this long. I absolutely love keto, it wasn't just about loosing weight it was also getting healthier. Now I am thankful to have found decluttering/minimalism and getting rid of items I don't need, just like keto got rid of food my body doesn't need. The best way I have ever stuck to anything is slowly to move that way, baby steps (What About Bob?) is what I have always thought of it as. If there's a book that basically says, man up and do whatever it is...um no that doesn't work with me. It needs to encourage and guide me in the right direction a little bit at a time.
Our bookshelf has all our kids books organized in rainbow order, Home Edit style.
My utensil drawer in my kitchen is grouped by size, like Marie Kondo suggested. (the rest of their advice got thrown out lol)
And we have a family closet in our laundry room, like KC davis from How to Keep House While drowning. (And clothes are in bins for me and my kids inside a cabinet with doors, sorted into broad categories: "tops" and "bottoms", because of you, Cas. And unfolded, because there is zero dopamine in laundry for me, and if i feel obligated to fold, they stay in the dryer for days.)
((There is tons of dopamine in pretty shelves though, and in decanted spices and in making things look like they belong. So decanting the spices is next!!))
I also loved Atomic Habits, by James Clear, and The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine, and Good Inside, by Becky Kennedy

This is probably my 2-3rd time to listen to this video as I'm (decluttering... downsizing my crafting space)...and, I gotta tell you.....that, recently....I found I was a "decluttering book junkie"😅.
Back in the summer, I ordered 6 -8 second hand books on this topic ...I read them all ...and, then was sad😢 because, I didn't have anymore "new ones" to read.
I am also a self help book junkie....if that book is decent and has good information....I'm going to do my best to get ahold of that book.

Yes to "please keep buying books!" I often hear buying books framed as a guilty indulgence or lack of frugality, but writing is a job, and paying people for their work is something to be proud of. Plus, having a copy to make notes in and refer back to helps the information sink in. We deserve that! : - )
I feel the same way about certain podcasts lately. But I have 4 books by The Slob Sisters, Pam Young, and Peggy Jones, who set up a 3 x 5 card system in 1977. It is a WONDERFUL series of books.

I'm actually not in a decluttering phase in life, I've let go of more than is healthy already and if anything need to be accumulating, and decorating, I am actually in the currently needing to organize in a way that works for me rather than against me and setting up a cleaning routine that works for me rather than against me. Unfortunately it's very difficulty to find someone who isn't over emphasizing decluttering but still talking about any of this stuff.

The thing about coaching, you need to have measurable goals that your coach can help you attain and keep you accountable to.
I love all of your material, but this one had me really laughing. Recently diagnosed with ADHD (been medicated for 2 1/2 weeks). Not caring about someone's kids soccer game took me out! I also do not care about who everyone is in every single picture you show me from some event. Your cousin's sister's kid who just graduated middle school does not mean a thing to me. If you want to show me their pet, I'm there! I'd rather talk about bunny poop than the news or the weather. It's freakin' hot, and I hate it. Being weird with a warped sense of humor is my comfort place.

I read Grit and much of it resonated with me because I teach a class at a university. That is the generation I feel (in general) lacks grit. Your story and mine have no lack of grit, so if you are not dealing with college and young adult-aged people, it may not mean much to you.

I used to read a lot of self-help books, but in the end I realized that my issues just weren't going to be solved by self-help books. Let's be real: how many times do you need to read "create a budget" or "don't eat junk food" or "do a little bit every day"? Sure, if you don't know anything about personal finance, then read a personal finance book or three. But if you've acquired the knowledge and aren't putting it into practice, then there are deeper issues going on that won't be fixed by self-help books.
Maybe it's because the book wasn't written for people who have your sort of brain. (e.g. Atomic Habits assumes that once you do something enough, it becomes automatic, but a lot of ADHD people have told me that their habits NEVER become automatic, even after decades. Atomic Habits won't work for them.) Maybe because it's written by and for people who never have the struggles that you have. (It's very easy to say "just check your calendar every day" if you've never had an issue checking your calendar every day.) Maybe it's because there's a trauma response that needs to be dealt with through personalized therapy. (If you're a hoarder because you grew up poor and are terrified of not having what you need when you need it, someone telling you to declutter isn't going to work for you.)
The things that have helped me most, in order, are therapy, community (specifically, a community of people who are facing the same challenges I'm going through and who can be a support network), and skills acquisition. Self-help books can MAYBE help with the third, but can't help with the first two.

I don't read much, period. Never have. I've always struggled with reading was even in special classes in School, .... I CAN read, and Im grateful that I can, but.... I don't enjoy it... I'd much rather watch a You Tube video, than read a book.... And each time I HAVE read a self help book, I started reading it wondering if this would be "The one" .... THE book that would finally give me something that I can use, that would change my life.... but haven't found that book yet....for most of them, I just don't "relate" or the way the book is written just irritates me, or something.... All that being said...
