- Here is my work for today, using an AI system to upscale this video i took at the SNCF archives and thought looked horrible quality wise.
This footage was made in the 60s in honor of all the steam engineers, who were seeing the end of their era.
it was originally very low resolution with a lot of artifacts, now i can say i'm pretty proud of what has come out of it.

French 🇫🇷 steam was perhaps the most sophisticated in Europe thanks to Andre Chapelon. I like the effeminate whistles for such large engines.
He inspired Gresley to produce the P2 and P1 locos.

Superbe documentaire ! Au moins, ils méritaient bien leur retraite à cinquante et quelques années. Leur activité, leur fonction même subjective ne pouvaient les éloigner de ces machines.
Alors, on les retrouvait avec plaisir et un immense respect dans les chemins de fer touristiques.
Chapeau Messieurs! vous ne conduisiez pas des TGV bien assis au chaud sur un siège confortable, vous donniez de votre personne.
Il est certain que rien que l’expérience de la chauffe sur un touristique est très intense, sur des "vraies" machines de plusieurs centaines de tonnes le travail était extrêmement éprouvant.
C'est en grande partie la raison de la mise en retraite dés 50ans de ses " forçats" du rail ! ( 1950) aucune comparaison avec aujourd'hui !
@@philippejenvrin2741 Des forçats du rail qui pourtant traitaient leur métier et leur machine avec un respect profond... les mentalités ont bien changé.
Despite not understanding the lingo, it's general meaning is clear. A quite enjoyable salute to steam-era railroading.

It's always interesting to see French steam footage, as so little is known in the US about French steam and there don't seem to be all that many preserved or operating locomotives. It seems like France used fairly large, heavy engines.
Overall there's probably about 200 steam locomotives preserved in france, ranging from narrow gauge to modern mainline engines. It's not much but it's already quite interesting i think. As for their size, obviously they were much smaller than most american locos for exemple, but a lot exceeded 150tons.

Wow great video. As a driver I’m curious why the two regulator or throttle valves unless it’s to let high pressure steam into the low pressure cylinders for some extra power. Anyway very enjoyable indeed. Thanks for posting a nice film on French steam
Compound De-Glehn system locomotives had a complete starting system using a simpling valve, allowing to completely separate the HP and LPs and have them both exhaust to the atmosphere. As you theorized, once the simpling is in effect, each regulator sends steam from the dome to one of the cylinder groups, for finer control when starting a train.

Cette locomotive la pacific 231 G 558 était la plus belle et performante fesait les trains rapides et était aussi a l origine de technicien américain d ou le titre pacific . Elle fut copié dans D autres réseaux en Europe
Mais la plus belle est la pacific 231 française et ce n est pas du chauvinisme.
Elle a commencé les premiers trains des 1922 et fut modifié 2 fois toujours pour la performance.
Mon grand père maternel était mécanicien sur cette locomotive avec Mr Brisset sont chauffeur il l avait à l époque et était titulaire de leurs machine ils l avaient appelés la divine . Mais ce qui est amusant chaques équipes des pacifics 231
disais toussent que leurs machines est la plus belles et la plus rapides alors ils parlaient de minutes gagnés et le charbon qui avaient récupéré c était un métiers difficile mais ils l aimaient. Aujourd'hui tout le monde s en fou.

@@hugos5114 that's okay there's quite a few 231s out there still! I'd love to see one in person and a french passenger car from that era, would love to compare it to an American passenger car from that era!
Awesome video france has had many interesting and unique steam and electric locomotive designs ever built around the world.I am from india and our wam1 electric locomotives were from france similar to your .bb 16000 with tap chamger and ignitrons
