Crescent Kayaks Shoalie // Primary vs Secondary Stability

  • The ‪@crescent-kayaks‬ Shoalie is a fishing feature rich kayak with tremendous SECONDARY stability. The uneducated paddler may say that this boat "feels tippy". What they don't know that this boat will work to stay under your center of gravity in the roughest of whitewater and breaking waves. The key to unlocking this secondary stability is fully exploring how far you can lean it before it finally tips over. That's exactly what I do in this first day on the water with this boat. My friend ‪@ScottBeutjerFishing‬ walks us through the features before I drag it down to the water, test the hulls speed, stability and agility, then catch the first few fish out of it.

    Hey Jeff: Fun fact about entomology: Daylight saving time first came into practice in Canada in 1908, after it was first proposed in 1895 by by New Zealand entomologist George Hudson. He proposed the change because it would allow him more daylight hours to find and inspect insects.

    Probably the best “practical review” of the Shoalie I’ve seen yet. Great explanation of stability and techniques coupled with some practical demonstrations as well. Appreciate your insight!

      It was refreshing to have a boat that did NOT provide overwhelming primary stability. When you paddle some that is as stable as a dock, you tend to give up a few abilities, provided you learn to paddle - sweep strokes, braces, draw stroke, torso rotation, etc.

    You guys are great and great together. I think you sold me on both the Crew and the Shoalie. I've been trying to figure out what's the perfect kayak, but I think it's more about having two or three for different things. I'm slow so it takes a lot to get thru to me. Appreciate the effort. LOVE the FLIP YOUR YAK thing. When we go out for the first time each year we practice flips, rescues and recoveries first. It's always a good time in way too cold water. Good stuff.

      An update on how the Shoalie handles in whitewater - it attains (gets back upstream through a rapid) very well for its length. I was surprised how well it did in that maneuver. It’s slippery rounded hull below the waterline is an asset in river fishing.

    Man this was a great one for me. I am looking for a new kayak. I have a bonafide 127 and for me at this point it feels very sluggish in the water. In the beginning it was great but now after a few years I find myself wanting more speed and agility as I fish a lot of rivers.
    I have been looking hard and fast at peddle drives for the ability to cover water. I would consider adding a torqueedo to a boat like the shoalie but I need to look at useable weight as I am big dude.
    Thanks for making this video Jeff, it really outlined the features of the sholaie.

    Having the seat adjustment molded into the boat is pretty clever.
    Something I picked up from tipping my boat, which should have been a duh thing, is you're finding the balance point. Juat like if you wheelie a bicycle, motorcycle, wheelchair, etc. There's a sensation of weigjtlessness right before it goes.

    Fun ant fact, some ants practice agriculture. Certain types of fungi have been cultivated by ants for so long that they've evolved into total reliance on the ants. They can't survive outside of the colony. AND when a young queen leaves to start her own colony she'll take a chunk of the fungus with her to start a new garden.

    Can't believe the Crescent doesn't include the dry storage bag for the rear hatch. Everything is an added expense with the Crescent brand where other brands they come standard. I own the CoosaX and the Crescent and each has it's areas where they shine over the other. Both great boats and I would say buy you needs for the water you will predominately be on the most.

    • @TheLittleStuff

  • @brianc0019
    @brianc0019 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've owned two of the Crescent kayak models, the Venture and Litetackle - there is always a compromise to stability vs. speed and tracking. If you are looking for a quality recreational lake or calm river kayak, then Crescent is it. However, if you're looking for "stability" without being a kayaking pro - then find another brand with a broader beam - on the downside, you lose maneuverability, speed, and possibly a well-tracking kayak.
    Let's be honest - no one who fishing cares about kayak tactics to counterbalance when you have a rod in your hand or when you're in pads or sticks hauling out the Big Ones.
    Crescents look cool in the bed of your truck or on your kayak rack - but for serious kayak fishermen - keep it moving to another brand this is coming from a Guy who enjoys my two Litetackles, but again I have other brands of kayaks for serious fishing.

    • @TheLittleStuff
      @TheLittleStuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian, I can be completely honest in saying that a brace can save you from flipping when going through whitewater or on big water with wind driven waves that got big fast and you’re just trying to get home. If a kayak angler doesn’t care about “tactics to counterbalance”, that kayak angler is primed to swim and lose more than rods in the process.

      It’s a good point, but keep in mind that for a very low cost you can cut out and add a bigger rod flange, or just cut out any or all of that front tankwell and fit as many spinning rods as you want since the hatch is water tight. 👍🏼😄
