    Love this Creek Fishing Adventures trip with the Rooster tail. 2 things to try..get some forceps to clamp on your gear, 2nd thing I like is a 1/16 ounce version. Maybe a #0 or #1 ball bearing swivel but the crane swivels work. I do love how the Rooster tail and Beetle Spin are equally opportunity offenders in smaller waters. Always find some fish. I have found that Panther Martins are the best lure for trout in the creeks of the upper Midwest as the blade shape thumps the water harder, and the blade directly on the shaft tends to snag less than a Roostertail or Mepps, which connects the blade with a wire loop to the shaft of the lure.

    My introduction to Roostertails. Trapper Lake up the trail NW from Stehekin, WA. A easy bush wack with some Devils Handshake. Going up the trail to the lake, I ran into 2 hikers in a big hurry to make the ferry on Lake Chelan. They told me that they had abandoned a rubber raft. Once at the lake it was a easy find. I was the only fisherman up there until a small group arrived. Since I was having terrible luck fishing, I watched them. They seemed to have pretty good luck, so I asked them about the lure they were using, Roostertails. I asked if they had a spare to sell me and they did. My bad luck was over.....

    I no longer use trebles. Even on Plugs. For the very reason you struggle to remove hooks. Plus a single hook offers less resistance for a solid hookup.

    I put Gamakatsu open eye siwash hook on all my inline spinner. They are made just for that . some trout streams don't allow treble hooks and I have noticed I get better hook up on panfish also. Its easier for them to get a #6 or 8 hook in their mouth than a set of trebels that are usually size 12 hooks you end up with a stronger single hook with a wider bite gap. Just snip the treble becareful not to cut the hairs and put on the siwash hook and close the eye with some needlenose pliers, the siwash come with the eye already open. Also I use a micro ballbearing swivel about half the size of what you were using.

  • @bobmalack481
    @bobmalack481 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rooster tail is a great lure, but the key is you have to have that blade spin around at a slow retrieve, no spin, no fish. Down side is the treble hook setup is prone to easy bottom snag ups. I have caught monster size Smallmouth and a state Trophy size Brown trout on them in tiny/shallow water. NEVER use the gold bladed spinner, use the chrome/silver blade in the yellow, red, and white colored weighted bodies.

    Nothing gets as many creek bites as in-line spinners. Particularly rooster tails.
    If you'd used a smaller rooster tail you would have caught a lot of those misses.
    The downside of course is if you're targeting bass, a lot of times the other fish are going to take the lure before the bass does. And although bass do hit in-line spinners, they sometimes don't want to chase a bait when they have so much food available to them with the panfish and minnows they have everywhere. A weighted soft plastic will work in those instances.
    BTW, never leave home without your pliers. If you're fishing a rooster tail, bring your pliers...or you may need to kill some fish. Especially aggressive green sunfish who will swallow the dang thing to where it's impossible to get out without pliers.

By the time I got back to my car, I was hypothermic and shivering uncontrollably. I had to strip naked in a parking lot while it was snowing and change into dry clothing.
