- Over the past couple of years, Richard Hammond has been neglecting his Opel Kadett, Oliver. So just before the worst of the British winter rolled in, Richard took the opportunity to check in on his Okavango Delta-smiting friend.

Oliver needs to be restored back to his original because any big change will just remove all the spirit of the original car you so much loved and it will therefore no longer be Oliver

Restore Oliver to his former factory glory! You can slam any car, or turn any car into a rally-mobile; I fear Oliver would lose much of his “Oliver-ness” through a major transformation.
I agree, but whatever you do, do *not* fix the fuel gauge! A little bit of frisson is required for characters like Oliver ;)

That feeling of disappointment you get when realise you got tricked into watching an advert.
I literally watched Hammond drive his wife to the woods in the new Ford pickup so I expected this.
I mean yeah it's an advert but he also wants our opinion on what to do with Oliver.
@@5p33dy305 i hope that part was actually genuine and sincere to his fans and not just all purely part of the advertisement. I would love to see the progress of whatever he ends up deciding to do with Oliver, maybe like a mini series or something (I personally want to see him make it into a sleeper but nothing too crazy. Same color and everything, but full drive train swap to about 350-400hp, upgraded brakes and suspension, and since this is Hammond...roll cage and maybe a 5 point harness lol)
@@dragon10449 that opel doesnt need more then maybe 300 max, its only 1477 lbs or 670 kg with 300 itll be equal to driving a dodge demon, wouldnt be very controllable after 300 hp. I feel like it would just spin the tires with such little weight

Honestly I think that makes the most sense! Even when Richard fell in love with this car it was for how simple it was and how well it tackled Africa as a result! Think about the bmw and he Mercedes that had all their parts stripped to make them as light as possible but still kept getting bogged down whilst this plucky little thing just kept on going

I hear that it's been chosen you'll restore to original, or nearly original. I reckon that's the right choice. You can get another car to hot-rod or to rally, but there's only one Oliver.

I disagree, Oliver, grew and with his adventures became a rally car. He was born road car and became a great rally car, Oliver has personality, authenticity is whatever Oliver wants to be

Most definitely this little guy deserves a factory correct restoration. He served you well and anything other than factory in my eyes would be an insult to his plucky spirit. I gotta say whenever I see Oliver or hear him mentioned it always brings a smile to my face. I don't think any other car ever on "Top what was it's name?" caught my attention as much as this car did.

Hammond thinks his Opel was the star of the special but I honestly think it was the Lancia. The way it practically fell over the finish line was quite heroic.
Oliver has always been “no nonsense.” Restore him to his original, respectable self. Anything extra isn’t Oliver. Nobody wants to see that, anymore than they want to see Jezza in a tuxedo.

i wouldnt consider myself a car person, but the sentence “Richard Hammond reunites with Oliver” fills me with immense joy - i used to watch some lesser-known car show with my dad while i was growing up, and little Ollie’s saga has always stuck in my brain. please restore him to factory!

In my opinion he should be restored as he left the factory. He is way to original and to rare to be customized and he looks wonderful as he is.
It would be amazing to see it as a rally car, we even have a video telling the story of this little Opel!

Restore poor Oliver to how he was when new, don't take away his character, let him be true to himself. He got you across Botswana in his true form, so don't take that away from him.

I'm late but I remember his TV debut and was happy to hear about you bringing him home with you. Please go for the full factory restoration. Leave looking young to the cars still finding their character. Oliver is like a friend but closer to that old man friend you would talk with in the pub, over a game of chess, or just listen to as he tells stories of yesteryear.
Restore him to original. If you modify him, he'll lose his Oliverness.
Restore him but with a couple of tweaks. Like electronic fuel injection and aircon. Plenty of off-the-shelf ways of doing that sympathetically.

I love this little car. And in fact, all cars like it. The simplistic, funny looking, saucy little cars with barely enough power to move themselves about. There's just something special about them. They've got personality and a sense of life about them.

Honestly, I'd say keep him as he is.
His rust, dents, scratches and broken bits are his history, they are what make him special.
He's not just any Kadet, he's Oliver.
Swap out all the old parts, refresh everything to factory new, then what is he? Just another old Kadet.
Keep him in working order, but don't ultimately replace what he is.

The car weighs 1500lbs wet. Drum brakes are perfectly fine for normal driving with a weight that low. Upgrading to modern disc brakes aren't going to be large gains. The brakes back then were never the problem for the plucky little under-powered lightweights, the problem was the problem of all 1960s cars. Tires. They weren't brake limited, they were grip limited. The downside of drums is heat, they dissipate it badly and grenade under heavy heat load. For a daily driver they are perfectly fine. Upgrade the tires to a modern compound and call it a day, it'll actually improve brake fade. Less time braking means less heat buildup from load so the brakes will last longer.

As I'm sure u know, the beloved musical "Oliver!" debuted on stage in 1963. The song says "🎵I'd do Anything for you, Love...go ANYWHERE with you, yes..🎶". Ultimately the blonde orphan is returned to his rightful home. Well then, should not your fair Oliver get the best care of his original self, and go EVERYWHERE by way of different people who love him, taking him to new places, photo journaling his adventures? Akin to the yard Gnome trips, but more participation!

How that car survived in Botswana is outstanding. I'd restore it just slightly, simply enough to keep it running safely for several decades
