Great video, have a Mac mini late 2012 (bought in 2012) with upgraded 1TB SSD + 1TB HDD (came stock) & 16gb RAM and it's served me well for nearly a decade now. Edit 4k videos on FCPX (using proxy media) and never ever have had a problem to date. Have always wondered if investing in an eGPU would even serve me well performance wise (running photo editing applications) and your video confirms that. Rather then forking out over £1k+ I'd happily get an eGPU for less then £300 😃 👍
A bit late to the party here, but this isn't a great comparison. I'd say if you already have a 2012 i7 Mac Mini (vs the i5 model you used) and have that machine maxed out with a decent sized SSD (1 or 2 TB) and 16 GB of RAM, adding an GPU box with decent GPU will easily win the value equation over an M1 Mini. Don't forget that the Mac Mini you compared with is the 8 GB RAM model, plus you opted for going with the standard 512 GB drive and compared with using 1 TB on the 2012 Mini. Sure you can make compromises on the new tech with less memory and less storage and that looks good on paper, but if you made those numbers equal, the M1 Mini is then actually $1299. Now that GPU prices are back down, the eGPU option on a 2012 to me looks like a no-brainer compared to the M1 (even with the Thunderbolt 1 bottleneck). If you already have a spare GPU to use it makes the 2012 Mini and even better value.
Good video, and guidance. I already have the Mac Mini 2012 Intel i7 Quad Core, 16GB RAM, 2 x 2TB SSD. Please advise as I thought of upgrading it with an eGPU and turn the machine into a Plex Server that could also transcode movies on the go when outside home. However, Plex transcoding only works with Intel CPU so upgrading to an AMD could be a mistake is that right? Cheers and Take care, Trevor
Thanks for this. No, definitely not worth spending money on old tech. But I have an RX590 sitting idle and all the bits for this except the TB3 to TB2 cable. I'll be using a $50 WavLink TB3 NVMe adapter, an m.2 to PCIe x4 riser card, and a PC power supply. Wish me luck!
exactly I had a RX580 sitting idle and a 2012 Mac mini so I ordered the thunderbolt 3 to 2 apple adapter $40 & the thunderbolt 2 cable $28 and the Razer Core V2 for 135 bucks grand total 216.98 with shipping and handling + taxes totally breathed new life in my ole Mac mini. Now I gotta up my ram
So, now Kryptonite is replacing Purge Wrangler and the new install instructions are kind of confusing. Do you have any insight into the new install process?
I agree with you. This might just work for you if you can get parts for cheap. For example. if you buy second hand from Facebook marketplace, or offer, or eBay. I do not like buying new tech gadgets because you pay premium. I like waiting at least one or two years for people to sell their products. I currently was lucky enough to get most of those parts for more than half. But it took time. I Would check everyday online for used parts. and when the right part shows up at the right price. Then I buy them.
my mac 2014 isn't recognizing the graphics card i have exact same setup as you with a and rx 5700 xt card in razor core x chassee. ran purge wrangler to a tee 3 times
Even with maxed out specs on a Mac mini 2012 the graphics aren't anywhere close to adding an eGPU. But it's hard to justify purchasing an eGPU when you can buy a Mac mini M1 for $649 (which performs amazing).
@@CircuitSphereUT even considering you can get something like a Asus XG Station Pro + RX 570 for half the price of a Mini M1? I think an Intel computer is still more versatile considering you can run Windows (Bootcamp or VM) and devices like audio interfaces. I have two thunderbolt audio interfaces which not compatible with AS Macs yet.
Should I get 2012 or 2018 Mac Mini for light video editing, home use and playing older games (MW2, South Park SOT) and Valorant? Looking for an intel device so M1 is not suitable for me unfortunately
2018 if its within your budget. Check compatibility on your games though, because a 2018 is going to have Big Sur on it. You could always run windows through bootcamp or parallels though for your games.
So the conclusion is after buying (MMM1) you do not have to install external EGPU with new MMM1. Especially I am not into games, I love to edit 4K footage with MMM1, will MMM1 cover 4K editing on DaVinci Resolve, FCPX, or Premier- Pro I have seen many videos people are complaining about MMM1 rendering & editing 4K footage to lagging. It looks every Mac need powerful graphics card. No matter if it's iMac, Laptop, or Mac Mini.
My Mac mini M1 has had no issues rendering and editing 4K footage. However, I use final cut pro and Apple realize optimized that software for the M1 chip. One thing to note is that the M1 Macs don't support external GPU's.
@@CircuitSphereUT Does this work better if I have windows 10 installed on my Mac mini 2012? Or do I still need to run a separate program to use the EGPU? Because I already have windows 10 installed via bootcamp
What you should say is that it's not worth buying all of this. I got a Mac Mini for free, had a 240gb SSD which is plenty fine for me. 8gb of ram came with it. I made an eGPU dock using a PCI riser that cost me a total of $30 with the SATA splitter I used with it. It was originally for Mini PCI-E but I'm looking into a Thunderbolt solution. If you really wanted to increase graphical performance it can be done for a hell of a lot cheaper than you quoted. Shouldn't cost over $250 if you want to go the budget route. Yes, you will lose a very miniscule amount of performance vs an actual eGPU enclosure but the benefit is well worth it. For Windows or Linux laptops it's great as you can keep using it as you upgrade but Mac not so much. That being said there's always Hackintosh! Great video though! Really enjoyed it
Yes you can but you have to download a patchers because this Mac in officially supported by Apple. For a officially supported Mac mini you have to look at Mac mini 2014 or higher.

Can you use any Radeon graphic cards with Mac mini 2018? Like something new like Radeon Rx 6900 XT? Just wondering
Only AMD cards are support. I would say, yes.
was there a reason you did not use kryptonite the update to p w that doesn't require disable of security measures ?
kryptonite was not around when I published this video. I am hoping to make an updated video soon with kryptonite.
Is it using thunderbolt 2???? 😮😮😮😮😮
Yes it's using a usb c to thunderbolt, then thunderbolt to the Mac
