Edward Bruce-Radcliffe commented about a happy improved 2013 trashcan MacPro with this workaround. I wonder if the older hardware has the infrastructure for making the internal and external GPUs to work in unison ... say in rendering or even processing video for displays !?
hey, the thunderbolt 2 cable does it has to be the one u linked or is the apple one also good enough ? i seen cheaper ones aswell so am not sure if there is any difference in them ?
There are others that work but not all of them work. They need to be an “active” cable and I tried a few different ones that didn’t work. You don’t have to get the one I linked, feel free to try another, but it’s the only one I’ve had success with.
Thanks for the instructions. I'm having difficulty making this work on a 2011 iMac. Got the Razer Core X eGPU enclosure and a Radeon RX 560 card. I disabled the SIP, ran Purge-Wrangler and got to the point where you select the option to install the eGPU and the script directs you to plug in your Thunderbolt cable, it works for a few seconds, detects the card and then the Mac crashes (i.e. unceremoniously reboots). Any suggestions?
Thanks for the video, I want to buy eGPU for my macbook pro 2013 late (i7 4 cores, 16 RAM, SSD ), usually, I work in After Effects and I have a doubt that in the working process it would get my workflow faster. Render is also important, but mostly I want to upgrade for the faster workflow. Does it make sense to upgrade?

One last thing, do you think that in the future Apple will make official use of egpu on thunderbolt 2? Thanks for everything
You definitely can use one of those cards, but you'll only get a fraction of the potential of the card.. it's really not worth it with Thunderbolt 2. I very seriously doubt that Apple will naitively support this, they've moved on from Thundbolt 2. Also, I'm glad you found the video useful!

I'm looking to upgrade my late 2014 5k Imac so it can easily edit 4k (it works with some 4k not with others) and I'm not too sure how far I need to go in terms of GPU to price to get a solid 4k 50fps playback in pr pro.

Can it all be done in target disk mode? Or in a different host system, then swap the HD into the stricken MacMini? Am I dreaming after having too much cheese? Thank you!

@@Eevnos do you connect hdmi to egpu card or mac mini directly?
Is it possible to use a Thunderbolt3 to Thunderbolt2 CABLE?
Possibly, but I didn’t have any luck with it.. you need to make sure it’s an “active” thunderbolt cable.
Ok, thanks!
Hi! I'm running a 2012 15" retina MacBook pro with Thunderbolt 2 on Mojave, is there a way a to use it with an AMD GPU card over Mojave, I'm worried about the SIP disable, it's possible to do it in Mojave too? Thanks!
Yep, Mojave is what I'm using in this video, works great!
Great tutorial Steve!
Thanks man!
Hi, i'm about to do this upgrade on my mac mini 2012 running Catalina. Is the option of NVIDIA available now ? If so, what gpu would you recommend for a plug and play kind of work? Thanks for taking the time. Great video!
Only older Nvidia cards will work, you’ll have to use one that has native support as the Nvidia web drivers are not available.
Nice video and very useful! Will the Razer Core X eGPU chassis work too?
Thanks so much, I'm glad you found it useful!
The Razer Core X SHOULD work, but I haven't actually tried that hardware so can't say for sure.
@@Eevnos Razer Core X DOES work using this tutorial
great video! subbed. i have an imac 2011 27" that i love but the vid card is only 1GB so video editing isn't the best....but i do have 32GB ram with it.
ROTTER That’s awesome man, thanks so much for the sub and glad you liked the video!
I know the 2011 iMac has Thunderbolt 1 so, if you’re interested I recently did a similar vid on a MacBook Pro 2012 (that has Thunderbolt 1) here: th-cam.com/video/WwlLBinpYYw/w-d-xo.html and the benchmark results here: th-cam.com/video/Y-IL_rEs2PY/w-d-xo.html
They may give some idea of the gains you’ll get.
@@Eevnos awesome! thanks man!
I added the RX 570 in the Sonnet egpu enclosure, but the RX570 says it only works with Windows 7 and 10 and Linux systems. It is running on my Mac mini late 2012, but I am not seeing the increased performance. The instructions with the RX570 say to download the latest driver, but the AMD websites does not have drivers for any Mac. What am I missing?
I really like your videos, and this one was really useful, but what about trying this on Thunderbult 1?
Thanks so much, j really appreciate that!
You tech I ally could use it with Thunderbolt 1 but it's be significantly reduced performance over 2 or, better yet, 3.
You don’t have to get the one I linked, feel free to try another, but it’s the only one I’ve had success with.
a video showing the before and after would be great
Thanks for the comment.. a bunch of people have asked for this and I am currently working on it.
It'll be up this Sunday at 6:45AM PST. 😁
Perfect!! Thanks 🤩🤩🤩
Excellent video, super helpful!! Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful!
Great video as usual. The late 2014 Mac mini has an M.2 adapter will it work with the EXP GDC Beast???
Ye ye, idk about on osx, but you can get it to work on Linux
Thanks for the instructions. I'm having difficulty making this work on a 2011 iMac. Got the Razer Core X eGPU enclosure and a Radeon RX 560 card. I disabled the SIP, ran Purge-Wrangler and got to the point where you select the option to install the eGPU and the script directs you to plug in your Thunderbolt cable, it works for a few seconds, detects the card and then the Mac crashes (i.e. unceremoniously reboots). Any suggestions?
Does your Mac have NVIDIA internal graphics?
Thanks for the video, I want to buy eGPU for my macbook pro 2013 late (i7 4 cores, 16 RAM, SSD ), usually, I work in After Effects and I have a doubt that in the working process it would get my workflow faster. Render is also important, but mostly I want to upgrade for the faster workflow. Does it make sense to upgrade?
Bro I appreciate this video...worked great thanks!!!
Damon Diddit You’re welcome!
I’m glad it worked for you!
Nice tutorial, works fin with Mac Mini (Late 2014) MacOS Big Sur. I would like to know if it is possible setup NPM or YARN script to use with the gpu.
Can you use an eGPU in windows 10 bootcamp for gaming?
and also are you able to use Nvidia GPUs in windows 10 because I don't have much use for an eGPU in mac os
SOLVED (!)
It was the (2 bios) bios-switch of the Vega56 that needed to be in the 2nd position (away from the front-plate) 😃👍🏻
Oh sweet!
Glad you got it figured out!
amazing video tanks for that , but if i have Macbook Pro 2015 15 inch runing in MAC OS CATALINA 10.15 still i need the terminal code ??? showing in your video ?? tanks .
Thx for the vid. Wondering if I need to use a second monitor to get the egpu performance on an iMac or does the egpu drive the iMac screen? Cinebench?
You should be able to use it without the external monitor, but you get a lower performance that way.
Have you tried the eGPU with OpenCore Legacy Patcher and Sonoma on old hardware?
Hi, thank you for making this video that is really very useful, I wanted to ask you, do you think you can also use 8gb video cards like the rx 590? Even if it's thunderbolt 2? One last thing, do you think that in the future Apple will make official use of egpu on thunderbolt 2? Thanks for everything
You definitely can use one of those cards, but you'll only get a fraction of the potential of the card.. it's really not worth it with Thunderbolt 2.
I very seriously doubt that Apple will naitively support this, they've moved on from Thundbolt 2.
Also, I'm glad you found the video useful!
@@Eevnos nks for the reply, I have an imac end of 2015 and 2gb of video card are not enough for me anymore, I don't know other solutions apart from selling the pc to upgrade the video card, I'm seriously thinking of getting an egpu with an 8 card GB, the thing that stops me is that I would not like that with future updates I would go against compatibility problems
Hey thanks for that Video. I have a Mac Book Air (Late 2017). Does that work with Purge Wrangler as well?
ITS ONUR SEZER I think those have a Thinderbolt 2 port, so it should work fine but I’ve never tested it.
I’m a little new to some of this. But if I’m understanding correctly if my Mac mini has a thunderbolt 3 already then it would just plug in and work? I wouldn’t have to run that script? Thanks
Thanks for providing this info! My ultimate goal is to drive 3 displays from my Late 2014 Mac Mini from an external GPU. Do you know if there are any supported cards that would drive 3 displays? My current setup uses the built-in hdmi, a TB2->Hdmi dongle, and a USB3->Hdmi displaylink dongle, and the performance is pretty bad, so I'm hoping an external GPU may solve the problem!
I Have Mac Mini 2012, which have the original thunderbolt, or thunderbolt 1, your video will work on this ?
life saver! i was going to sell my macbook so i could build a gaming rig.. but no need to now..
So I have a question with the apple GPU info page. if you had installed big Sur on a machine with only thunderbolt 2... would there really be any benefit to going for a 6000 series card? I'm just trying to work out at what point you're really limited by the thunderbolt 2. I'm looking to upgrade my late 2014 5k Imac so it can easily edit 4k (it works with some 4k not with others) and I'm not too sure how far I need to go in terms of GPU to price to get a solid 4k 50fps playback in pr pro.
I have mid-2011 Imac. I did what you instructed in this video. Purge-Wrangler seemed to work. But the icon does not populate in upper right screen like yours did in the video. Do you have an idea why?
Sidney Outlaw what graphics card are you using in the enclosure?
@@Eevnos I got it working. It's was something i didnt do. In the egpu casing, i forgot to plug the P/S to the card. Then i had to download and install macOS Catalina patcher because my imac doesn't support MacOS Catalina.
What about NVidia Cards?
Nvidia cards (at least newer ones) won’t work for anything Catalina and above.
There are no drivers for them.
Do you know if this can work with Mac Mini, Catalina 10.15.7 Late 2012 Intel Core i5 ? , it has thunderbolt 2
Hey. Loved the video. Can you tell me if this works on a 2011 Mac Mini? It only says "Thunderbolt" and not "Thunderbolt 2." Thanks.
Thanks!! Does it work with Catalina?
It does!
So, the eGPU will then drive an iMac’s internal monitor properly? (sorry if already asked). You did mention this could be done with an iMac.
Thank you very much, I had that doubt, I want to use an EGPU with my MBP 15 "2013, does it work with any case? I really liked the razer core, regards.
QUESTION: when I try to get the Purge-Wrangler Script, there is no "Installation" section so I cant get the code, can you please help? Thank you.
A few questions, I’m getting all the stuff for my birthday. Will this work with my 2nd monitor plugged into the computer? And will this work with Bootcamp?
Hi, I have set up my mac mini with this and everything works perfect! Editing is more smooth and its awesome! However! When I click on export video in adobe after about 5 minutes into exporting the monitor goes black and the video card fan goes to 100%. Any suggestions? I tried to export video like 10x and it does this every single time. I tried to google it but can't find anything on this!
Once the Purge-Wrangler Script and everything is done, can I enable the SIP back ? Thank you for the tutorial.
Unfortunately no, you'll need to leave SIP off for this to continue working.
Eevnos thanks for the quick answer! Cheers
can i use a epgu to my macbook pro late 2013? i really need more power for music production
Oblivion You can.
I’ve used it on a 2012 so there’s no reason it shouldn’t work with the 2013.
Eevnos wich one?
Oblivion The one enclosure I used is linked in the description.
Awesome, great video! Did someone also tested if the card is working in Bootcamp? and compatible with the latest version Big Sur? I'm playing allot of warzone these days in bootcamp but the basic videocard is offcourse crap : My Mac is Late2015 Imac 5K / 1TB SSD 32G memory / M380 2G., so a external GPU would be really a great extension! any info would be appreciated! Cheers!
I love the idea of being able to use a eGPU on Mid 2015 MBP but am very concerned about disabling the SIP, what can be used to replace this security feature that wont interfere Purge-Wrangler?
this question might be unrelated for the topic of this tutorial but im interested in knowing if the adapter used in this video may be used to connect a thunderbolt 3 ssd external drive to a 2015 macbook pro thunderbolt 2?. Possibly using the ssd drive to boot from?
how do i know what cards are supported by Purge-Wrangler? i know there is 8 months sense i last commented but i'm still wondering if this is worth it
It’s best to just go with a card that’s supported by whatever version of MacOS you’re using.
Hello, I bought an OMEN egpu accelerator with an AMD rx580 graphics card and my 2015 MacBook Pro retina does not read the connection, I tried my wife's MacBook Air and she does not recognize it either, what could be happening ?, I have already done the steps that come out in your video
So how do i then connect my THunderbolt 27 Inch Monitor? Can you help me with that?
My MacMini was one of those where Apple were sloppy with the GPU heatsink - so it fried :(
Now... would it be possible to do the entire install of OS, disable SIP, run script, enable eGPU... without having a GPU to start with? Can it all be done in target disk mode? Or in a different host system, then swap the HD into the stricken MacMini? Am I dreaming after having too much cheese? Thank you!
Hi there, great video! Will that solution help to run Mac Mini 2012 (Catalina) on Samsung 49" CRG90 in native 5120 x 1440 ?
So can i run an invidia rtx 2080 ti on my 2013 trashcan mac pro?
In theory yes, but not with anything newer than High Sierra.
Mojave and Catalina both require an AMD GPU and there are no Nvidia drivers available for either of those.
Eevnos, do you think this method will be patched in the future?
Can I do this with my Mac mini 2011 👀 I will appreciate a answer 👍🏼
I would love to know as well!
@GV L Thanks a million!
Another one is the adapter from t3 to t2 cast that unit don’t have a thunderbolt t3 !!!
i have a mac mini mid 2011, do i need to purchase a t to t2 adapter or a t2 to t3??
Hi @eevnos thanks for the video very clear and concise! Can you confirm though that right now in 2020 the current OS works (10.14.6)? I see stuff about newer versions of OS blocking this workaround. Thanks again!
should i use thunderbolt 2 cable or HDMI cable when connecting my MacBook to my UltraWide LG display?
Luke Thomas If you just hooking up to one display it doesn’t much matter.
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) do you think it would work for me?
Does this work better if I have windows 10 installed on my Mac mini 2012? Or do I still need to run a separate program to use the EGPU?
Hi! Should you go back and Re Enable SIP on your Mac once the EGPU is installed?
If you re-enable SIP the capture card won't work anymore.
Hey. I need help. I did everything in this vid but i don’t get it to work. The egpu box doesn’t even gives me a light. I have checked the power supply and it is working, my GPUs works fine with other systems. Is there something I can’t do?
Thumbs All The Way Up! Thankyou Sir!!!!
Thanks a lot, I appreciate that!
