I always thought that dosdude is a 50 something year old ex Apple engineer who worked on original macs and this why he knows his way around the hardware and software. I am 🤯
I thought the same. Very few IT people are proficient with hardware and software at the same time. I know dosdude1 from the patch he released to install Mojave on unsupported Macs. Truly unique talent.
I’ve had similar ideas about utilising unused TB chip lanes on newer models, and adding extra juice to magsafe 4pins(+)/mid for ID/body as gnd, tho dunno why would we need so much power input😂 This dude is genius!
This was definitely the most ridiculous upgrade that I’ve ever performed. So glad you got a chance to mess with this insanity! I definitely want to give a HUGE shoutout to iBoff RCC for coming up with this idea, and designing the boards used. So be sure to check them out as well!
Actually we never tested it with GTX 1070TI, but we're glad it works! LOL cool demo as always. Just another question - is the NVIDIA WebDriver required for this? I mean, does it will work flawlessly without it? Ps: thanks to Luke Miani for posting this awesome video.
He's kept my 2008 mac pro going and let me work from home during the covid lockdowns. Its a damn shame he stopped doing his patchers because Opencore, whilst functional is a lot trickier and clunkier than his work.
Definitely ludicrous. Maybe one of the best videos that you've ever recorded, Luke. Props on Dosdude for showing and sharing this, what a great guest!!!. Pure genius. EDIT: Maybe the title of the video could be better, I mean, I never expected to see something like this; because it's insanely great.
I really hope that this kid (DosDude) is doing more than messing around on youtube videos. I know a couple of PC engineers that are astounded by the work that this guy is doing and they all agree that that he could easily be working for MS or Apple, etc.
And yet by messing around on TH-cam videos he's already helped an incredible amount of people extend the life of their machines, inspired countless others, etc etc. Considering the amount of corporate greed that has been spreading like the plague, why would working for them even be a good thing at this point?
Oh my gosh! I love the content white DoseDude and you Luke you should do more Video Content together. It’s so great to see how much fun you guys had together.
Colin is a wizard. I always thought, there's gotta be someone out there just insane for these unibodies, more so than Luke... Makes me want to do this to my Mum's old 2011 :D
...and the "nerd -o-meter" just went through the roof!! I didn´t understand one bit of it other than sensing the overwhelming enthusiasm. Absolutely fascinating to watch. Loved it!!
This one was 2 MUCH, hardest tier Mac modd. I guess this kind of modd was only aviable in same 2011 model. but this project shows how great this computers used 2 be back when we were on X86 Arch, thanks again for invite dosdude1 aka "Collin", hope he can show us a few more projects 2 fight the programmed obsolesense, his idea is great, maybe with a manual of some kind of friendly explaining + a propper friendly case for GPU this example could go from experiment to bussiness model.
I bet if apple only let their software or hardware easier to mod it would have been even more impressive to save all those failed graphic cards on the old mac's
Wow! For people with the soldering skills this is definitely a way to breathe life into what may well be a dead or dying system. Hell, you could even offer this up as a service to others...
I still have my 17 MBP Mine died a few years ago from the dreaded "Radeongate" plague. Boy I'd love to have this upgrade for mine. Hey DosDude I WANT ONE!!!
I have no use for a machine like this. So what?! The legendary DosDude1, for the second time hangin' with Luke and blowing all our minds. That was a great watch.
Love dosdude and Collin, used his Mojave and Catalina Patchers. This mod is awesome and a lot of fun but it only will help a few people. If Colin did another OS upgrade patcher for the latest OS like the Catalina patcher, it would help thousands of more mac users. Let's all hope!
just get a good case for a supply and video card. Actually u can get another case for another system, then u can run them separately with different monitors
This supports my view that Apple can easily replace a couple of thunderbolt ports on the Mac Studio with m.2 PCie NVMe slots with ease. Thus the Mac Studio with a small reduction in parts cost, could support 3 secondary NVMe drives. This would solve most of the issues faced by creatives struggling with a morass of thunderbolt limited external NVMe SSD. I really hope Apple chooses to add user upgradeable m.2 Pcie NVMe as a secondary insecure SSD (so that user media remains safe, even if the Mac SoC does a melt down and makes the SoC encrypted primary SSD unrecoverable. This would remove render and transcription speed and timeline bottlenecks when video editing by enabling media to be served at full speed of the SoC, without competing caching on the main drive. For the cost of giving users what they want, and reducing production licensing costs (the intel thunderbolt fee), apple could deliver another genuine game changing computer.
Wait the 1070 Ti doesn't support Metal, it's only working with web drivers up to High Sierra... while the 700 series work in Monterey easily... makes no sense!
Now my question is can you do this modification again with a second 2011 computer and take off the screen of the second one and somehow wire both computers together to be one? Now that be even more impressive.
Yep thunderbolt 4 should have have been pcie gen 4 instead of gen3 speeds. hopefully we will get thunderbolt 5 at pcie 5 speeds and go from 40gbps to 160gbps. Egpu enclosures would be great at those speeds.
dosdude1 is the goat. his procedure to disable the notorious failing AMD HD 6850 in my 2011 MBP. I was this close to recycling it until I stumbled upon his videos and purchased his kit to full disable the dGPU. Truly an extremely important player in this vintage mac community.
this time I understood what he did, but DosDude is a genius. the other video, holy cow, I hardly understood what he was saying LOL it was so over my head.
Luke: How long did it take in total for this project ? Dosdude : Takes deep breath Me: Oh my ! 6 years ! Dosdude: I think like 5 hours ! Me: write this comment about this crazy thing !
Will somebody please fund dosdude1 so he can save the planet. I really look forward to having a place to mail in my Mbp2011 17 inch and getting all the mods done and mailed back . That would be epic
Hypothetically speaking, if I'd just bought a 2011 17" macbook, what would you recomend me not to do to avoid damaging it's motherboard, as you've said it tends to have a faulty graphics card
Apple should hire Dosdude, he has far more talent than anything we've seen from any MacBook Pro engineering effort since at least 2015. Apple should sell value laptops that have lower rez internal video and allow for the eGPU expansion in the same manner--full bandwidth. Apple has made so so many mistakes in recent years. I love MacOS because I'm a developer, but the hardware has gotten iffy. The newest Macbook Pros that are back to a full keyboard and not just lighting ports are better, but so much could be done and so much has been lost due to the people they hired that took them down some very bad roads (soldered on RAM--why why why?)
got a Late-2011 with a mid-2012 logic board 15" MBP could really use this upgrade, as the meme states, Shut up and take my money already. I just have design a way to house a powerful enough PSU and a GPU that can I can bolt onto the bottom of the MBP, and cool it all as well. and maybe cram in a blu-ray drive for good measure
It was so cool to see the device in person at the VCF. I think I failed to truly appreciate what I was seeing at the time. I forgot to ask, can it run Crysis?!
I have an old apple 17 sitting around, but not smart or patient enough to do all that, it's gathering dust some where due to a graphic card failure. Some clever dudes could make full use of it lol.
I always thought that dosdude is a 50 something year old ex Apple engineer who worked on original macs and this why he knows his way around the hardware and software. I am 🤯
DosDude1, I need this mod ASAP, but can you only use it on Macs that have or had optical drives?
He is 50 he drinks the blood of children to stay youthful
I thought the same. Very few IT people are proficient with hardware and software at the same time. I know dosdude1 from the patch he released to install Mojave on unsupported Macs. Truly unique talent.

Your skills (and mind behind them) are simply out of this world sir. Absolutely mind blowing.
Dosdude1 for President
Hey man! Great to see you and Luke in the same vid! And thank you for also replying to me on twitter when I had issues with my 5,1 Mac Pro 🥺
Actually we never tested it with GTX 1070TI, but we're glad it works! LOL cool demo as always.
Just another question - is the NVIDIA WebDriver required for this? I mean, does it will work flawlessly without it?
Ps: thanks to Luke Miani for posting this awesome video.
Always impressed at your work!
Dosdude is a genuine genius. A huge asset to the Mac community.
He's kept my 2008 mac pro going and let me work from home during the covid lockdowns.
Its a damn shame he stopped doing his patchers because Opencore, whilst functional is a lot trickier and clunkier than his work.
He is an absolute champion
Okay, the genius level soldering aside, can we also just appreciate dos dude’s voice?
Love the guy!
Almost Batman-like... 😄
@@-ct-celcomtechniques2566 yea, from wish
@@tubeori3120 Come on ! 😅
DosDude’s skills reminds me of Steve Wozniak how he enjoy these types of projects.
Yes! They should meet irl
Im suprised that he isnt working for apple yet, that is some crazy shit he has done
@ Apple wouldn't like making old Macs usable or newer Macs upgradable...
This guy dosdude deserves a Nobel Prize for electronics.
Let's start with a microphone
I absolutely love the geeky enthusiasm here. It’s great to see people genuinely excited by what they do for a living.
Wow, this guy is clearly a wizard and he enjoys being one too! Hats off to you sir!
Man I love the 17 inch models. Dosdude is a legend of our time!
This is so awesome. Bless d0sdude for his Catalina patcher.
I love how happy DosDude is to show this stuff to someone who understands just how ridiculous it is.
DOS dude is like the good doctor of Mac machines.
Definitely ludicrous. Maybe one of the best videos that you've ever recorded, Luke.
Props on Dosdude for showing and sharing this, what a great guest!!!. Pure genius.

we need to protect dosdude at all costs honestly
I love how proud he is as explains how he did it
...and the "nerd -o-meter" just went through the roof!! I didn´t understand one bit of it other than sensing the overwhelming enthusiasm. Absolutely fascinating to watch. Loved it!!
dosdude1 is a wizard and I'm glad he's finally getting the attention he deserves (on multiple channels).
It is difficult to surprise us nowadays, but this definitely does. It is really amazing!
Mind blown. At this rate he could literally build a better computer than Apple engineers could.
I bet if apple only let their software or hardware easier to mod it would have been even more impressive to save all those failed graphic cards on the old mac's
Pfft he didn’t design this upgrade he just soldered it.
yes iBoff company created these and other upgrades, there’s skill from them and dos dudes to implement it
Wow! For people with the soldering skills this is definitely a way to breathe life into what may well be a dead or dying system. Hell, you could even offer this up as a service to others...
His voice demonstrates his tiredness of doing this difficult task
I still have my 17 MBP
Mine died a few years ago from the dreaded "Radeongate" plague. Boy I'd love to have this upgrade for mine. Hey DosDude I WANT ONE!!!
Insane content, many thanks)
Wow...this is INSANE! Absolutely amazing!
I have no use for a machine like this. So what?! The legendary DosDude1, for the second time hangin' with Luke and blowing all our minds. That was a great watch.
This is a beautiful creation
Absolute genius! This guy is amazing! Watched his videos on his own channel and now we get a second taste of him here! Oh, my!
I've been subscribed to Dosdude for years. I've probably heard him say "arlrighty" hundreds of times. He's a soldering master.
DosDude is the man :) i have loved his work since the socketed mini 2009 mod :)
wow... now that is crazy.. love it...
Great video! Glad you got dosdude1 to show his stuff. 👍
Used this thing during VCF East, this is awesome!!
Steve Wozniak to DosDude, “DosDude, I AM YOUR FATHER!”
Loving this current 'Luke Miani The Thinkerer' arc.
there should be a link to iBoff’s page about this upgrade, it’s missing from the show notes Luke
just get a good case for a supply and video card. Actually u can get another case for another system, then u can run them separately with different monitors
8:45 where is the link?!?! I wanna check this out
wild. glad to see dosdude get the respect

That is nuts! Did not even remotely think that would be possible!
Wait the 1070 Ti doesn't support Metal, it's only working with web drivers up to High Sierra... while the 700 series work in Monterey easily... makes no sense!
This is absolute insanity… makes me wanna do it to my 2011 15 inch to make use of bypassed AMD gpu bandwidth
Never seen what dosdude1 looked like, he look liked what I was expecting, love his content.
finally someone did what ive been thinking you should do. would make sense for gaming laptops tbh
Now my question is can you do this modification again with a second 2011 computer and take off the screen of the second one and somehow wire both computers together to be one? Now that be even more impressive.
This makes me curious to know if there’s actually sized pieces you can put in the unibody that’ll make it work a quarter of good as that
I love that guy on the "Good doctor" he's great!
heyy i saw this at vcf east!! :))
Is it possible do this set up but with a Mac mini?
Very dope mod
Yep thunderbolt 4 should have have been pcie gen 4 instead of gen3 speeds. hopefully we will get thunderbolt 5 at pcie 5 speeds and go from 40gbps to 160gbps. Egpu enclosures would be great at those speeds.
Genuinely one of the coolest things I've seen someone do with an old Macbook Pro.
Dosdude is a total boss!!! Great job! Great work! Awesome video Luke!!
Dos he is the dude! 🧠 💥
What a beautiful push back of planned obsolescence- love it.
is this possible on something like a 13'' 2011 macbook pro?
I'm surprised there isn't a link to a store for purchase
Incredible work! Serious soldering skills!
Next move is to put a i7 ultra and a 4k display
dosdude1 is the goat. his procedure to disable the notorious failing AMD HD 6850 in my 2011 MBP. I was this close to recycling it until I stumbled upon his videos and purchased his kit to full disable the dGPU. Truly an extremely important player in this vintage mac community.
That could also be an awesome Hack for the Mid 2011 Mac Mini with HD 6630M graphics.
this time I understood what he did, but DosDude is a genius. the other video, holy cow, I hardly understood what he was saying LOL it was so over my head.
Luke: How long did it take in total for this project ?
Dosdude : Takes deep breath
Me: Oh my ! 6 years !
Dosdude: I think like 5 hours !
Me: write this comment about this crazy thing !
Thansk alot luke .I will try to develop this to. Hope I can.
They might bring back pcie gpu compatibility if they launch the destkop Mac Pro
What do you mean bring back? The Intel Mac Pro already has it
He is one of the best Apple & developers I have seen on TH-cam.
amazing!!! im not even a macbook user and im impressed!!!! thank you youtube algorithm to show me this video!!!
What a talent!! he should do master class sessions or courses for engineering.
dosdude1 is a genius. Big respect!
Will somebody please fund dosdude1 so he can save the planet. I really look forward to having a place to mail in my Mbp2011 17 inch and getting all the mods done and mailed back . That would be epic
Dosdude sounds like the good doctor so soft spoken
dude is a mad scientist and he don’t even look like a mad scientist. he looks like a normal person
Dos Dude is a Legend!
Hypothetically speaking, if I'd just bought a 2011 17" macbook, what would you recomend me not to do to avoid damaging it's motherboard, as you've said it tends to have a faulty graphics card
Unreal. Does anyone know what the song is right at the end??
Luke what KIND OF TV IS THAT IN THE BACK GROUND AND DO YOU HAVE AN ANTENNA HOOKED UP TO IT ?
oh man I’ve never seen dosdude1 but I loved his voice

Collin's skills are on a whole other level!
Collin is blowing up lately. He's great.
He is real batman with hes Voice..
Radio Shack was opened just for Dosdude
Can this setup be upgraded to ventura using opencore legacy pactcher?
Apple needs to hire dosdude1. He’s a genius
watch this with eyes closed 2:01-2:05 8:27 8:57 😭😭🤣
Dosdude is amazing. Love his work
That is mad scientist level of creating, no, modifying!
It was so cool to see the device in person at the VCF. I think I failed to truly appreciate what I was seeing at the time. I forgot to ask, can it run Crysis?!
So happy to see Dosdude1 in one of your video
This makes perfect sense, anything is possible!
Dosdude is the OG! He should be the head of r&d at Apple.
Dosdude is a generation hero 🦸🏼♂️ no doubt
I have an old apple 17 sitting around, but not smart or patient enough to do all that, it's gathering dust some where due to a graphic card failure. Some clever dudes could make full use of it lol.
