Harbor freight has a sandblaster for like $30. It’s junk, but probably worth if for cleaning up a boat

One more tip to add thanks to my dad in 1983. Rivets. He made a very solid 2inch + dowel from solid heavy metal. I should add the photo of it. Then with two guys one with the heavy dowel and one with a hammer and punch. Tap every rivet to seal up the boat. Ya it takes a while but my leaky boat was water proof. Once you find the first rivet together. You just say next. Tap tap. Next. Tap tap. Do this before you paint. I've had two of these tin boats and after selling the first one, I watched it drive off and said to myself, I'm going to regret this. And I did. So luckily my dad had one and gave it to me before he passed in 2004. I'll never sell it. One thing I miss from my old one is the extended wooden seat in the front. Which also was great for stuffing things under and of course. Using that seat to lean back on like a recliner. Using extra old life jackets for padding.

This is excellent information for anyone considering refurbish8ng an aluminium boat. I'm doing my 13.5' Quintrex, and I've never attempted painting aluminium in the past. I was looking for a matt or low sheen option for the interior to reduce glare. The hammered finished looks excellent. I'm leaving the outside in brushed aluminium with probably 400 grit finish, maybe polish up below the waterline for really gliding through the water. Thanks for sharing 👍

I am surprised laser removal has not become more popular yet. Hopefully the market will have more rentable workshops in the future. Laser will burn all the organic material and leave the bare metal (no risk of denting the material in the process).

It's look OK not perfect.

It is obvious this young man fishes in lakes the vast majority of the time. I've been fishing for trout for 70 years ,all of which has been in rocky moving streams. If the stream has stocked fish, line visibility doesn't mean a thing. If it is a relatively fast moving stream with lots of rocks breaking the surface creating eddies and pockets of still water, line visibility doesn't mean a thing. Until fluoro was invented about 20 years ago and became popular about 10 years ago when the chemists made it manageable, the only line available was mono. Fisherman have caught countless hundreds of millions of trout on mono. The part about catching trout in muddy water is pure stupidity. Trout don't feed in cold muddy water, especially high cold muddy water. Then we come to the odd man out in these fishing line debates. Dry fly fishermen. A Fluoro tippet is dead in the water, it sinks. Then there is the main floating fly line. Glow in the dark orange, red, yellow or green are the favorite colors. They are the size of cooking twine and can be seen 100 yards away, so visibility obviously doesn't matter. What does matter in all of these scenarios is lure presentation and manipulation. Knowing where to cast a lure and how to control it's depth and retrieve speed it what catches the fish, not the the visibility of the line or the lack thereof. My choice of line is 10lb OHERO ADVANCED BRAID in blue. It's stated diameter is .012 mm. That is smaller than 1 lb mono. Zero stretch, zero memory and $27 for a 300yd spool.

Thanks for posting this video... I have an old v-hull that my Grandfather bought new in the late 1940's that needs some hardware refits and a TLC paint job... I'm gonna try your method, as I am not set up for big painting jobs, and this seems very doable and won't kill my budget...! I also subbed your channel!

For river/stream trout, i've been using 10-14lb hi-viz fireline with a 3-6lb fluoro leader for quite some time and has been very successful for me.

I repainted an aluminum boat a while back and used spray on bead liner over a textured finish on the interior of the boat. It turned out pretty good.

If you don’t paint the bottom, if doesn’t make sense.

Most people have no idea when you dont flip the bail Over and pull the line tight to the spool you just wind slack on to the spool and you end up with a mess and buried line which will make you insane. Flipping the bail Over is the start but you ALWAYS have to pull the line tight to the spool and wind until you have tension sufficient to keep the line tight to the spool . I flip my bail and tension the line so fast after every cast you wouldn’t even notice me doing it. . Store you reels in a dry dark place and you dont need to respool new line . Ive used the same mono for over a decade and it has remained fine with no issues.

Would it be necessary to strip down an anodized hull down to bare metal? I've often wondered if a good spray paint would adhere to a clean anodized coating.

probably a lot cheaper to get supplies and same paint at Manards , probably more like 100 bucks if you don't buy their paper and off brand tape that does the same as frog tape. Also can recycle amazon packing paper , that's what i use when restoring vintage tractors . I collect the packing paper every time , thank you Amazon !! If you watch your plastic rolls, paper , tape, and other cheaper items I'm sure you can get the cost down even further. Great job on the boat I have 14 ft Montgomery Wards ill be redoing soon.

Came upon this topic when trying to decide. Wanted to give braid a shot in some Ultralight fishing for trout. I paired up 0.3 (7.5lb) braid varivas avani with a 3lb fluorocarbo from varivas all which are jdm lines. Paired with a shimano vanquish 2019 And a Graphite leader belleza ux super ultralight. I think my biggest ick is tying the leaders 🤔

Aircraft paint remover works WAY better... put it on and within minutes all the paint bubbles off. Leaving you with clean bare metal. Sure... it will destroy your lungs and cause your kids to be born with 3 arms, but it's so worth it.

Back when paint strippers were far less environmentally friendly you'd be able to just hose the paint off after letting the chemicals sit for just a couple hours.

Did you sand the surface between each coat of paint?

I have 4lb test clear fluoro on my ultralight trout rig but I just hate how difficult it is to tie my knots or thread it through a bobber. Thinking about swapping it just to make my life easier when tying knots. Great video! Thanks!
