    I don’t have a full blown ceramic on at present but do have Gyeon Can Coat which has a lot of the coating properties. I have noticed that the car does stay cleaner and if it’s rained over night and the car was a bit dusty etc, if I blow it dry the rain water takes the dust with it and the car looks like I’ve done a full wash. If I stuck a wax on top, it would look great but I’d lose those excellent properties that Can Coat gives me.

    You are correct Jon, it really is an unknown but the affect of wax on CC depends on what you do.
    I have CC and do like to wax it every couple of months, as you state, some like to. I have a tub of Swissvax and a little goes a very long way on the car. Even on the PPF too. It looks good and gives it everything about waxing you like.
    With so little wax needed, I do not see how the wax has affected the CC. Taking into account the CC life is 18-24 months I think this is another consideration it is OK to wax. only my opinion.

    Great video, I believe the layering / topper coatings pushed by many are a saleman's dream. I wish we could see at the molecular level a coating and any 'layering effect' to prove or disprove once and for all!

    All carnuba based waxes have a very mild abrasive by the very nature of the natural nuba product. Some brands advertise this by saying that these are cleaner waxes. So putting a nuba based cleaner wax on top of a coating will actually degrade the coating slightly. With synthetic waxes you have to watch out for the carrier but in general they are safer. Probably another thing to add is compatibility, wax will stick to anything but for how long? Eg opticost (sealant) will last few months on well prepared surface but on coated car as a topper it will barely do 1m.

    Can’t thank you enough for talking about this. Did a large correction on my car a bit ago and sealed it with a coating, I love the process of waxing my car so I wanted to know what kind of cons I would see. Of course I would be covering up the benefits of ceramic.

    I must admit I do it for a car show or display. As I know the Carnauba will be gone after a few weeks. It gives an incredible wet look.
    The only coating that really works with a wax is Ammo Reflex. Then a layer of Ammo Skin then Carnauba for special events. Works perfect.

    The idea of leaving it a year or so between giving my car's paint some love is never going to happen, I enjoy the whole process of cleaning my car. Using a coating and expecting to do nothing else for months afterwards removes the fun in trying new waxes and other products. Plus the depth of gloss and shine you get from some waxes far outweigh the somewhat sterile look a lot of coatings leave behind. For wheels though, CC's are definitely the way to go.

    I know someone who has the Gyeon Syncro kit on his car. He tried putting a wax on top of the ‘skin’ (top coat) and found lot’s of problems for the wax to cure. It was as if the coating wouldn’t let it bond to the surface properly.

    This all makes sense, great video. I've had good luck applying (certain and verify specific) ceramic SIO2 based liquid or paste products over the top of SIO2 ceramic coatings. As a maintenance topper so to speak. As long as the product on top matches the makeup and performance characteristics of the coating (SIO2 to SIO2 for example). Otherwise (as you stated) your just masking or possibly degrading the coating. Fusso is great (on its own) but yeah I don't think I'd put a heavy solvent based PTFE over a ceramic coating. As you stated to each his own and it won’t blow up if you do (lol).

    Great video once again! I've learned so much from your videos! If I could ask for some advice, I've heard about some detailers combining sealants with a wax but not all sealants bond with all waxes. On your best of 2017 video you recommend Tac Systems Moonshine and Angelwax Enigma as the best sealant and wax. My question is, seeing as both products have ceramic (SiO2) qualities, would I be able to use the Moonshine as a "base layer" with the Enigma as the "top coat"?

    Excellent video John. I have a Teflon coating on my Nissan that is nearly six years old. Would it be ok to apply Fusso Light (as it is White Pearle Metallic) over the Teflon coating, or should I just stick with something like Chemical Guys 3X Hardcore Carnauba Paste Wax or Collinite 845? Cheers.

    I don't actually think that coating integrity will be affected by wax if it's supposedly meant to protect against harsh conditions but I'll surely agree that the water behavior will follow those of the wax. And also I have coated and non coated car. I still was the coated car for that extra gloss and I feel that wax hold up a bit better against bird droppings and even if there is etching it can be easily removed. One more thing is that I believe that the coating will act as a great buffer layer to protect the origibak paint. Really just the extra depth from the wax.

    I appreciate all the fantastic videos! What do you think about Gyeon's instructions to put a coat of wax on new Mohs coatings to protect from water spots? I always thought it odd, but it doesn't seem like they would put it in the instructions if it could compromise the coating

      @ForensicDetailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didnt know gyeon advised this. MOHS on its own from what Ive seen of it has little repellency.. but its a hard and durable (just hard to be able to see it) so maybe gyeon thought it would compliment their product... not sure on this one to be honest.

    I have been using Fusso Coat on just about everything except windows. FC doesn't show the amazing performance like the beading ceramic coats do, but it is really close especially the durability of Fusso coat. On wheels, i do still need to agitate the ( track pads ) brake dust that has built up more in certain sections of the wheels with a brush or a mitt while wiping off clean using car soap and not citrus cleaners. I'd still like to try CC's though.

    Excellent info. Thanks for enlightening me about auto ceramic even more so. Watching other videos on this subject, I'm really learning that if you have a great quality auto ceramic product, you don't need to apply polish or wax on top of it. If you feel you have to do that, then maybe the brand of auto ceramic was not a good quality brand. So going forward I will focus on only purchasing top notch high quality auto ceramic instead of any cheap low price stuff I see. Thanks for the insight. 👍

    Great channel 👍!
    A quick question.. I indend to apply cquk ceramic to my vehicle, with a gliss finisher. I understand and appreciate all that you say about applying paste wax to a ceramic treated car, but what about a product like turtle wax ice seal and shine spray wax as a periodic treatment?? My reasons are I like to use this product following the great reviews it has, and it's very quick to apply and buff off.. The other reason is I am reluctant to use over priced (in my view..) reload products, and don't fancy a bi-annual compounding and polishing session to prepare for a new ceramic coating. If it's compatible, wouldn't a product like this enhance the longevity of the ceramic coating if the spray wax was lightly applied periodically? I accept the wax will not bond to the treated vehicle in a 'normal' way, but really interested to hear yours, or anybody else's views on this. Many thanks in advance 👍👍

    The problem with ceramic coatings, is you can get it on ebay for $5, and they sell like lotto tickets. Lot of hype as with all products, and a lot of guys getting kick backs on their channels for posting links and where to buy. The hype is greed that saturates the market, knowing that 90% of products are all the same, just a different label and markup. The auto detail industry has the best marketing in the world, and it just rips off the normal consumer

      4! holy shit and your still awake... thats a world record, one guy got to 3 once but he was never quite the same, but like pappillion after a 5 years stretch in solitary...
      darker.. hmm yes.. but not by much mate.. Ive seen and measured the ability for prroducts to literally increase darkness on a color spectrometer.. lol Im not even bullshitting, I really did this once at autoglim. but the amount they generally darken is tiny. what you want is gloss mate good old fashioned poping gloss with black, and as little swirls as you can because they show up easily on black. If your not into the whole 300 days machine polishing thing.. just a good gentle decon every 6 months and nice abrasive rubbing off poorboys blackhole over the paintwork followe by a wax will work wonders... If you want to go high tech check out silica primer polish (can be used by hand) and after the primer polish a nice silica sealant (have a look at the tac systems non ceramic silica coatings). other than that try not to scratch the paint. darkening is not what you want.. to darken you would have to put product on clearcoat which "darkens" but what you want is the clearcoat to be nice and poping so the color coat below it is displayed as best as it can be.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, key question can these waxes deliver you the same qualities of a ceramic coating in terms of self cleaning. if not are you hampering the coating by putting them on?

    • @10minbreak
      @10minbreak ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ForensicDetailing Insightful, thank you! But given that, wouldn't any topper, whether ceramic, polymer-based, graphene, wax, etc. possibly hamper the properties of the original coating? Or are there toppers we can safely apply without that sort of interference? I'm looking for a topper for extra gloss but I'm also hoping to keep the base coat alive for longer. I was told using toppers would help with longevity of base coat.

    Try CarPro Essence Plus over a (SiO2-based) ceramic coating! It really adds visible depth and some gloss - even though if your coating is still intact, the difference in gloss per se will be hard to spot, even if you're comparing adjacent panels. And it lacks most of the drawbacks of classic waxes, as it is more durable and its carrier system is more compatible with the ceramic coatings.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      these are like the primer polish.. bit like gyeon primer right gabor?
      any idea what format or what is the material in these products thats layed out.

    • @berczigabor
      @berczigabor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Jon, that's Essence, without the Plus. Essence Plus, however, is strictly a topper (like a wax, a glaze, etc), and can not be used as a primer. I know the names are confusing, and I have no clue why CarPro chose to go with these... but that's how it is. Anyway, CarPro advertises Essence Plus as non-abrasive compound, that you can use to repair damaged ceramic coatings. In my experience it does a lousy job at that, but it really works well as a standalone glaze or a topper for ceramic coatings. It needs to cure a few days in the sunlight before it exposes its full "power", but it really adds shine to the coating, makes it slicker, and also has very good water beading properties. It's thicker and seems to last far longer than for ex. Reload - which you can still apply on top of it, if you want to.

    Hi John - the point you made around the 4 minute mark really caught my attention. A lot of these toppers are water based toppers. Ceramic coatings are hydrophobic. How in God's name does this work? Have you done any testing on the longevity/bonding ability of toppers? I'm extremely skeptical of them and I'd love to hear your input

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      a lot of times that contain a cationic component which is also used as a binder for the SI02. This component is drawn to the clearcoat, while the water is simply carrier which evaporates. but yes if the surface is very hydrophobic it does effect the carrier and potentially effect application. But you could like load up the product into an apoplicator and spread over surface this way for example. they work though for sure and they can bond ontop of the coating.

    I have purchased several CQuartz kits totaling 200 ml from CarPro. I am still trying to gather knowledge before using the product on my new Z06 and several other cars. My question is: what preparation is needed maybe two years from when the paint was first treated to refresh or renew the ceramic coating? Does the existing coating get buffed off or chemically removed, or is the new application of ceramic coating just applied on top of the existing coating?

    • @berczigabor
      @berczigabor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Polishing the paint will remove any and all coatings still present. And you will want to do it anyway, because if you don't, your paint will not look its best, and the coating will trouble bonding to it. I also suggest you do claybaring, because in two years time a lot of contaminants have been embedded in your coating/paint, which again, will ruin your finish, if not being taken care of.

    What about a wax over a sealant? I just machine polished my car and applied fusso coat then petes 53 wax. My thought was that the wax doesn't last as long so when that goes you have another layer of protectant which lasts for months before reapplying.
    Need to get some trim dressing as all that compound / polish went a little on it. Been showed insta finish by the slim's team and they tried it on my faded door handle and it brought the finish back. Something I think you should look at Jon

    • @downundergarage6968
      @downundergarage6968 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zain K you can put petes 53 on top of fusso. I have recently tried it with no probs. Waxes tend to stick to anything. Mind you petes 53 is more of a show wax so it will not last long time, it is slightly less durable on top of sealant but works no problem. I get about 4wks out of it. Another option is to put petes 53 and then seal it a bit better with something like megs fast finish. Ff is designed to go ontop of waxes. I tend to get about 2m on beeding and another 1m of visible protection when washing the car. Experiment a bit on various car panels and see what you get. Im about to put cqukv3 plus reload on rear door and roof.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its interesting isnt it. because if you use the megs xpers spray wax like I say your car wont blow up. Im also noticing now the industry is moving away from waxing on a coated car as being a faux pas. I think this is perhaps because now the added upsale of toppers or ceramic waxes is greater than the arguement that the coatings have radically superior surface qualities so you need to use a coating over and above other products. things have shifted perhaps. but in theory putting a wax on a coating shoud be counter productive if the coating has the best surface properties.

    What about waxing first and then applying your ceramic treatment of choice? I recently used armor shine on my car and it in no way shines like a fresh waxed car with a candy like wet high gloss. Planning to try The last Coat ceramic spray. Waxing a achieving the shine is a labour of love in the winter months not so easy

    • @ForensicDetailing

      if I told you all these products actually reduce gloss on highly refined car finishes you might not believe me. candy wet look gloss comes from having clearcoat in very good condition (polished)... really you want products that sit on top of the clearcoat and repel dirt and contamination and water to make the car easier to wash and dry so you can maintain the quality of your clearcoat finish. you cant wax on top of a cermic either mark it wont bond properly. Id personally skip the last coat. no disrespect to them they are real and theres a guy behind the business. but unfortunetly theres something going on.. some supplier offering a product to individuals with some sort of sales platform bundle as well I think, at the moment you have companies like last coat popping up every other week trying to sell you water based siloxane spray sealants for a lot more than you need to pay for them... have a watch of the "great ceramic spray scam" video on the channel.

      Easy...Industrial fallout is the worst at damaging unprotected paint. I live near a major airport and decided to test that theory of how bad could it really be to neglect a vehicle that sits outside all day long and while the sides of the car mostly survived, the top of the car and mirrors literally had the clear coat dissolve away and the base paint form spidering cracks throughout. Now, that I have replaced that vehicle, I'm looking for something durable to handle this destructive environment without being a slave to its maintenance as I don't have the luxury of a garage.

      a lot of them on the market.. no strong thoughts.. Id personally go with something like Cure or Reload or C2v3 or something from a ceramic provider still. Theres just so many different materials used in products. Hard to know what another company have used in an "sio2" spray and whether thats going to work with your product. If you however pick a product thats been developed to use with your ceramic then its a safer bet.. doesnt mean theres are not good combos to be found out there. For a QD/drying aid on my soon to be coated back door with cqukv3 i am going to use 1 part reload 1 part of car pro ech2o mixed with 15 parts water. A carpro usa guy merlin calls it a magic elixir. The combo does have a big following in the usa andvits used for a short boost of gloss during every wash. Its relatively cheap combo as well.

    • @berczigabor
      @berczigabor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd think that if you get water spots, that's not because of an SiO2 sealant being on there, and you would get them anyway, probably even worse, if it wasn't there. The sealant might just accent the spots more, because the more perfect and reflective your finish is (which it will definitely appear if you've applied a SiO2 coating on it), the more even superficial defects (like most water spots) will stick out on it. I also don't think that a wax could protect itself or your paint better from water spots, than silica sealants. But it might fade and degrade faster, and thus make the spots less apparent, against a now less perfect and reflective finish.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tac moonlight can be used to top up coatings.. but you do need to consider compatability still and whether the coating below will support a top coat product after a full cure. lots of other considerations as well before you top up a coated car with another coating.

      hey there after one year, most of the coating should have eroded away but in some places it wont. you will also have a load of contamination build up in the paint. so quite simply the process to apply the carpro will be just like when you applied cure. wash, decontamination, polish (hopefully just a light polish and no major correction this time) and apply carpro. if you try and skip that and just wash and apply etc.. or wash quick decon and apply results will not be as good.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saiiiiiii1 these materials last. problem is people want to see a hydrophobic surface as an indicator that they have protection. The main resins in ceramic coatings are typically slightley hydrophobic through to not very hydrophobic at all. Take the gyeon MOHS base coat as part of the syncro package, its hydrophobic performance is non existant, but its actually a durable harder resin than a lot of other consumer coatings. but you would think its dead after a couple of washes. So brands blend in other organic resin components in with the ceramic components so more of the material has more hydrophobic performance (or provide top coat solutions).. adding those materials to a coating though means a higher percentage of the coating is NOT the durable resins, its less durable components such a silicone or flourine or whatever material they use... this will increase the hydrophobic performance but reduce the overal hardness and durability of the coating.. but from a laymens point of view the observable increase in hydrophobic performance gives the impression you have a better performing coating. (watch me cheap ceramics 6 months on to see an example of that with the 6-7 pound coating being better than the cheap 3-4 pound one but having poor hydrophobic performance)
      Also theres another discussion to be had around the surface characteristics of the coating getting effected by oxidisation. and also masked or buried by other materials used to maintain cars.
      but in short the hydrophobic performance is not all its cracked out to be. you can add hydrophobicity very easily now with products like wet coat etc...

      The protection part is overblown. But as far as appearance, it makes sense to layer them, because each new layer adds even more shine, or restores it, once the layer below it has begun to fade and disintegrate. That said, most "laymen" (ie. those who didn't train their eyes to recognize even subtle differences in paint quality) won't notice much of a difference, and it's really for the OCD types, or for those, who like to detail their cars just for the sake of it.

      The reason for putting a ceramic on top of a paint protection film is to get some of the gloss back that you lost in the first place , putting a film over high gloss paint will lose a noticeable amount of gloss. On top of that it will provide hydrophobic activity that will make cleaning the car esier.

      thats a good video and the gentleman makes some valid points, its not an all out assault on ceramics but more a subtle gentle nudge away from them in certain scenarios towards an alternative that they happen to provide. the biggest problem, how impartial is this.. to be fair theres been some BS advertising from certain ceramic brands that have done some silly visual things with waxes to make them look bad, when they are not.. so its not bad that someone is firing back some warning shots in favor of paste waxes...
      The video though doesnt cover all the negatives around paste wax performance versus some of the advantages of ceramic coatings.. Its not a complete comparison of pros and cons.. The problem maybe if swissvax went for an all out assault, someone else could fire back with a comparison of a 1000 dollar wax versus 15 dollar one..

      mais oui mes amis :) Im of french huguenots descent so we are brothers. I could have a crack at doing the vid in french but it would have made even less sense! :) but yer sort answer is I wouldnt put fusso on top of a ceramic coating personally (cool product though it will give some ceramics a run for their money on durability)

    CERAMIC COATING IF IT'S REAL SHOULD BE JUST SILICA, SO IN OTHER WORDS -GLASS. SO YOU CAN UT ANYYTHING ON TOP OF IT AND IT SHOULD NOT EFFECT CERAMIC COAT IN ANY WAY. IF IT EFFECT-IT IS NOT CERAMIC COAT.

      No, you're better off using the specific maintenance top coat that goes with the ceramic coating.

    Great video,
    But the real win is that if my baby is having trouble falling asleep, I can just play one of these videos, and he knocked out to the monotone voice.

    I like to wax every week or 2 ..no time for ceramic coatings

    • @MrFrancispiche
      @MrFrancispiche 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its Ok if you like a dust on your car! because the wax is a dust magnet!
      with a ceramic coating you can "wax" your car with c2v3 or reload every week if you want and your car stay clean!

    For 8 minutes and 17 seconds you said that waxing the top of ceramic is bad for the ceramic coating. Holy shit. You must like your accent more than the rest of TH-cam.

    Hope this doesn't sound offensive, but you seem more like a normal guy or something. Easier to identify with than some guys on other channels. Weird accent but cool guy lmao j/k
