For sure! and let's face it, Live is the real test. So many so called "great bands" just could never measure up to their studio stuff. Triumph sounded even better live imo. Saw them twice and the US Festival Set really showed millions what they are made of live. Rik and Gil really cut loose.

I was lucky enough to be a high school senior at San Pedro High at the time and I was in that crowd of 350,000 people for the most amazing all-day concert I've ever been to in my life. Little did I know on that day that I would be inspired to have my own rock and roll magazine in Cleveland for six years and that I would interview Triumph multiple times, as well as most of the other artists performing that day -- Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Van Halen and Scorpions. Those were the good old days! So glad to have lived when I did. Long love Rock And Roll.

@@LegoGBlok Here in their Hometown area, Triumph were always RUSH's baby brothers. Now mostly they did not overlap fan bases. As a Generalization Triumph had the Teeny Boppers, the Cheerleaders, The Popular's, and the Jocks who wanted to bed the Teeny Boppers and Cheeleaders, while RUSH had the Misfits, the Goths, the Nerds , and their fan base, was a smaller group of the 13-25 but also the 25-50 intellect crowd. Triumph wrote mostly for their fan base less deep then RUSH, but every once in a while raised their game. RUSH just wrote deep thought provoking stuff most of the time, but did do some less depth tunes.

    • @toddstevens13
      @toddstevens13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@LegoGBlok Well RUSH did last 25+ years longer together, and most of Triumph's fan base was different from RUSH's. While RUSH went into depth, Triumph stayed on the Pop/Rock sound most of the time, so they co-existed in somewhat different realms, here in their back yards anyways. More teeny boppers went to Triumph then RUSH, and that was ok.

First of all, thank you so much for reacting to Triumph, as I feel they are one of the more underappreciated bands from the late 70s thru mid 80s. Rik Emmett was undoubtedly one of the best male rock vocalists of his era, and perhaps of all time. His skills on the guitar weren't too shabby either. The reason you probably didn't hear them is because they were overshadowed somewhat by Rush, the other, more famous Canadian power trio. Triumph has a lot of bangers though. Hold On, Magic Power, Fight the Good Fight, Blinding Light Show, et. al.

Rick Emmett's voice was amazing live. Like Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury, Devin Townsend and other legendary performers always have their hand picked live sound engineer, to make the most of their incredible voices. Days before backing tracks and 3 musicians filled stadiums with one opener for years. Thank God they came along before the death of the American DJ getting to play what they want - at least after midnight - before national algorythms and industry only playlists.

I was at this show for my 21st birthday.
I love VAN HALEN, but folks they were not very good this night.
Day 2 (Sunday, May 29th 1983) was dubbed “Heavy Metal Day,” with Quiet Riot; Mötley Crüe; Ozzy Osbourne; Judas Priest; Triumph, Scorpions; and Van Halen. I believe this was the exact order in which they played.
Van Halen had already been three months into a massive tour when the 1983 US Festival came up, and weren’t in the best condition when their tour bus arrived at the concert site.
David Lee Roth was so wasted he couldn’t remember the words to the band’s songs. According to Wozniak himself, in his memoir Woz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon, Roth was “practically falling down onstage. He was so drunk, slurring and forgetting lyrics and everything.”

About10-15 feet from the stage . Met him and shook his hand after the show . Rik is an amazing guitarist - actually he is a virtuoso . He is highly accomplished in rock of course , but uses blues , jazz , Latin , Celtic , bluegrass , classical and flamenco technique . That's right . He has won many awards and well deserved . Check out his website and see up close and personal some of his bluesy jazz songs and you will know what a great guitarist is . Over and Out ... Peace

Easily the most underrated band of all time. Always seem to be overshadowed by Rush

Rik Emmett is one of the most underrated guitar player/singers. He is still doing live shows - acoustic but still sounds great in his 60's. Saw them the same year '83 in Glens Falls, NY. Laser show was incredible.

I was at this show!! Mountain opened up for them. I remember tripping on some shrooms and getting a green laser in the chest - was so cool!!

I first heard these guys when I was in Japan in '81.
They sure filled my ear holes with some good tunes!
    Try Magic Power!

Yeah. Love Gil's stuff. "when the lights go down" from this same show was great too. Hell, the whole set is one of the great guest live set spots ever. Following Triumph this day was a fail.

I was at that concert. The US festival 1983 was a three day music festival held in Devore California. Day 2 was Heavy Metal day and included Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, and Van Halen. The crowd that day was insane.......upwards of 500,000. Best Day EVER!!!

Agree with all these comments. Criminally underrated!! Two amazing singers and one insanely huge sound for 3 guys with so many hits and one hell of a huge light and pyro show. TRIUMPH Forever!!!

These guys played at my high school and I sat front row. They were awesome!! Rik Emmett plays a guitar like breathing; he's just so natural. The only other guitar I say that about is Kim Mitchell of Max Webster and The Kim Mitchell Band fame. You should check both these bands out.
A lot of good Canadian boys in these two (or three) bands. Lots of great Canadian talent out there, for sure!

On the US festival this was Rock day and people say Triumph was sober and on queue and blew away the other bands on venue that night which were Van Halen and Motley Crew, as they were stoned, drunk and sloppy and bad. Listen to the whole US festival set!! You will love it and maybe become a fan!

have seen Triumph many times they are from just down the highway from my hometown. They used too tour heavily during the eighties up here in Canada. Great live band. As good as any American band i have heard. True pros. Canadian music is not too be fucked with. Many great bands.
