Toronto is a very fast-paced, go go go city and it does get very overwhelming because you constantly hustling and bustling. Newfoundland has a chill European vibe to it where people are more chill and family oriented.
Hi love, yes, one of limitations here on da rock , our public transit. that was a major convenience when I lived there in Ontario. the other thing that drove me around the bend when I came back, no shopping on Sunday, lol. boy did that take getting use to. Unfortunately not all us newfs are as friendly as we could be . Hopefully you were not treated too badly by those who choose ignorance . The one thing I loved when I moved to Ontario more than 3 decades back was getting to learn about other people's cultures from individuals themselves. Growing up in my time the snow wasn't the only white on da rock. I recall only a couple of Asian families with take-outs, an occasional East Indian family & met one black family, not sure of where the origins were from, I remember feeling like I was gonna drop through the floor when my mom asked the girl if she could feel her hair. In my mother's own way she was trying to learn something new. I'm glad to see da rock becoming more colorful than it was in the 70's .

This was really interesting! I went to MUN as well. I lived in St. John's. Newfoundland is an interesting place. Toutons are delicious. I have never been to Toronto though (other than the airport). This was a really cool comparison!

Toronto Transit (TTC) is actually 24hrs however, yes some routes do end between 1:30-2:20AM. Its called the Blue Night and the bus routes and numbers change.
I can’t speak about the job situation now as covid has made jobs difficult everywhere to get Students usually pay for insurance that’s included in their tuition. That coverage however is only valid for the duration of the semester. When I was a student , International students were able to get MCP which is the province health card for Newfoundland. I don’t know about now
I used to live in NL and then moved back to Toronto. Definitely, housing is cheaper in NL compared to Toronto, so that is an aspect that I missed. Also missed fried cod tongues with scrunchions! I will probably move back again when I am closer to retirement. Great video by the way! 👍👍👍

Awesome video!!! I'm from Newfoundland but had to move to Toronto with my family in the late 80's. My dad worked on the fisheries and left with no work. It was really hard to adjust. The people and life in general is so different. I absolutely intend to make my way back home. U can take the girl out of Newfoundland but u can't take the newfie out of the girl!!! My hubby is from Trinidad, I can't wait for him to visit!!!!
There is no Saint John's in Nfld, that is New Brunswick. Your map should show St. Johns as the capital. If you are making a video about Nfld, even if you lived in Corner Brook, you should at least get the names right.

Newfoundland is one of the worst places to live in Canada. Because they literally charge you for your existence in the form of POL tax. POL tax imposed on everyone over the age of 18 even if your not of Canadian Residence.
Why are so many people talking about how much they love Newfoundland and Labrador?! I was born here, lived in both of these provinces, and moved here against my will in 2009 due to my grandmother’s illness (sadly, she passed away in 2016). I am planning on moving back to Ontario next year for graduate school and job opportunities for myself and my partner in the federal government, more sources of entertainment, a greater degree of accessibility due to my disabilities (e.g., trains, busses, etc.), better medical care options for my conditions, and simply because I hate living in this province. If you happen to have one of more disabilities (e.g., epilepsy, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, physical disabilities, etc.), DO NOT move to Newfoundland and Labrador! It is simply not worth it. 😣

Similar to some folks who were born and grown in Ontario, they could also have the same sentiments you have. I'm an Italian girl and I'll be studying in Canada for a semester, I have to choose between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, does anyone have any tips for helping me choose?
Nova Scotia is absolutely beautiful and has a fantastic culture but having lived and gone to post secondary school in both places, trust me when I say that there is no place as incredible as Newfoundland. There’s something very special about living on an island in the North Atlantic. It’s extremely isolated however, so if you have the means or desire to visit other places in Canada while you’re a student, Nova Scotia is a better option since is connected to the mainland and much less expensive to travel to other areas. You won’t be disappointed in either place. Fantastic areas of Canada.💫 There’s an island portion of Nova Scotia called Cape Breton that would give you the island experience as well as the close proximity and ease of travel that you would have living in mainland Nova Scotia as well. Great college there as well. Halifax has a great bar and food scene as well. Very fun nightlife in both places!

Love your video, pretty accurate as far as I know except the pop saying the cod fishery collapsed in the early 1900’s was not accurate. It shut down in 1992 due to mismanagement by the federal government.
People from Newfoundland are world renowned for their hospitality. And it sounds like it’s well deserved. I’ve lived in Toronto, and I can relate to a lot of the things that you said about Toronto. As a woman of color, the idea of being in Newfoundland has made me feel nervous, any time I’ve thought about it, or have had a possible opportunity to do that. It sounds to me like the hospitality and warmth is extended to people of color. Maybe that’s simplistic for me to be thinking of it that way, but it does sound like a safe place for me to go.
They are indeed. As a Caribbean girl, alot of the culture reminded me of island life. Ppl inviting you to their homes for dinner, some dessert always being offered to you, tea or coffee. You can guarantee 8/10 times get hand knitted gifts which I loooveedd. Lots of my socks some mittens were handmade by ppl who gifted them to me at Christmas or my bday.
Sady my poppy who takes me fishing every year and i love very much, is in the hospital and might die soonbecause of VERY bad health, if he was not such a strong man he would be dead, Do u know any brakes?
You have to love my native province. I am now an expat Canadian married to a Filipina and living in the Philippines. The culture, albeit very different, has some deeper common aspects with Newfoundland. This is my forever home; somewhat like Newfoundland under the palm trees, with consistant weather and temperatures between 27 and 33 degrees C. ❤
I love NFLD for vacation been 18 times. My husband is from there. But we live in Toronto. More opportunities in Toronto. My heart ❤️ is always in NFLD though.

Processed foods are more expencive in newfoundland, but if you have the property, you can grow your own vegetables, raise chickens etc. Which makes the essentials potentially a lot cheaper.
I grew up in rural newfoundland, about 2 hours from corner brook, i have lived in toronto for 12 years or so now and have made very few real connections with anybody, your not lying at all.
Newfoundland and jamacia have a trading history that goes back a few centuries at least, they traded potatoes and salt cod and such for sugar and rum, and im sure more things im not aware of, it was easier at one time for ships to just sail up and down the coast stopping at outports along the way.
I grew up moving back and forth from toronto and corner brook. It was literally culture shock each time. The places changed with time but in such different ways. But the places are also completely different on their own.

I was born and grew up in Toronto. I also lived in St. John's for 4 years and travelled around the island of Newfoundland. I think both places have their benefits and disadvantages, it depends a lot on the life style you prefer and your ambitions in your career choice. One thing many people don't realize is that Newfoundland has some of the best golf courses in the world. Nothing like playing golf where you keep one eye on the ball and one eye on the bull moose standing 20 yards from you.

Your experience and if your class schedule will fit their work schedule for them to hire you. With COVID, it’s hard to say how easy jobs are to get now. Hope that helps

I’m a Newfie. I have something to say to warn any people of colour who move here for school. You WILL get stared at. It’s not usually racism. 95% of the time it’s just because there’s been no people of colour HERE for hundreds of years. We are as white as they come lol 😂 (Edit: Not saying that’s a good or bad thing, just the way it is)
I am a person of colour and just moved to NL! I have experienced microaggressions and racism quite a lot already and I have only been here for 4 months so far. I don't find people very open to speaking with me and I find it a lot harder to meet new people here. In Ottawa, I would go for a walk and by the time I came home I would have 5 extra phone numbers of new people I had met! I am so bewildered by it all because everyone says people here are so friendly. 🤷🏽♀️

It’s all I know and my entire 18 years of life I maybe seen a total of 2 or 3 people who weren’t white, it’s not that we’re racist (at least from what I know) it’s just we never get to see anyone else because of how cut off we are from the rest of Canada and the world, I could be wrong and we could just be a bunch of racists here lol but from my experience that’s probably why you get strange looks or treaded a bit differently

St.John's, hopefully, is working on fixing it's sidewalk winter snow clearing problem, one that made it highly dangerous for pedestrians in recent years. They were forced to walk out onto the roads. People living in the larger cities tended to take that 'perk' of sidewalk clearing for granted
Great point! Now that you mention it, that is something bigger cities take for granted. Sometimes there might be delays but it’s great to be able to go out and the side walks are already cleared.

I lived in Ottawa for a long time. Weather is terrible. It would snow in December and that snow would never melt because of the cold cold temperatures.. Thus the sidewalks were icy until the spring thaw. At least in St. John’s there might be lots of snow but it would melt until next time. Ottawa and Montreal are bitterly cold in winter. It was a shock to my system when I first moved there from NL.
Now, Canada gives 2 years work permit to anyone who is willing to live and do any job in Atlantic Canada. High school education is enough. After 2 years, you can get Canadian PR.
finally someone that understands why food costs more in newfound land but from what i see its not much more than in NB my family in ontario are freaking out because im planning a move from fredericton to grand falls windsor newfoundland they're up in arms saying i cant afford the taxes and fod prices a quick serch of food flyers its the same and the taxes are the same at 15% husing costs are way lower and you get more home for that price even now with the canadian housing market how it is 2020 i bought my current place for $32,000 and have two offers on it for over $100,000

@@CharisMaggieTV yeah i learnt that a few years ago when i got tired of my family sabotaging my life in ontario so i sold my house in caledonia ontario moved 1000 miles or 1,552km away to oromocto NB then sold that house in 2020 and moved 15 minutes away to fredericton where i could pay off the mortgage and buy a home outright. however now the NB government is telling me to kill myself. they deny me a hemipalegic, disability benifits saying "we cant afford to give you the benifits you should apply for maid instead" that same government just posted an 800 million dollar surplus im fairly confident the $5,000 the benifits would have cost them would be feasible so im moving again to get away from that toxicity. and decided on newfoundland after watching a documentary about what happened there on 9/11. plus im 32 and retired so i dont need to find a job. had i listened and done everything my family said id still be in a wheelchair but because i didnt listen to them and took risks to get walking again i only use the wheelchair when im in to much pain to walk

I’ve been in Toronto for some time now, and I’ve never seen the amount of snow as I’ve seen when I was living in Corner Brook and for that length of time as well. I was very specific about what area of Newfoundland I was referring to as well

I was born here, lived in both of these provinces, and moved here against my will in 2009 due to my grandmother’s illness (sadly, she passed away in 2016). I am planning on moving back to Ontario next year for graduate school and job opportunities for myself and my partner in the federal government, more sources of entertainment, a greater degree of accessibility due to my disabilities (e.g., trains, busses, etc.), better medical care options for my conditions, and simply because I hate living in this province. If you happen to have one of more disabilities (e.g., epilepsy, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, physical disabilities, etc.), DO NOT move to Newfoundland and Labrador! It is simply not worth it. 😣

Nova Scotia is absolutely beautiful and has a fantastic culture but having lived and gone to post secondary school in both places, trust me when I say that there is no place as incredible as Newfoundland. There’s something very special about living on an island in the North Atlantic. It’s extremely isolated however, so if you have the means or desire to visit other places in Canada while you’re a student, Nova Scotia is a better option since is connected to the mainland and much less expensive to travel to other areas. You won’t be disappointed in either place. Fantastic areas of Canada.💫 There’s an island portion of Nova Scotia called Cape Breton that would give you the island experience as well as the close proximity and ease of travel that you would have living in mainland Nova Scotia as well. Great college there as well. Halifax has a great bar and food scene as well. Very fun nightlife in both places!

People from Newfoundland are world renowned for their hospitality. And it sounds like it’s well deserved. I’ve lived in Toronto, and I can relate to a lot of the things that you said about Toronto. As a woman of color, the idea of being in Newfoundland has made me feel nervous, any time I’ve thought about it, or have had a possible opportunity to do that. It sounds to me like the hospitality and warmth is extended to people of color. Maybe that’s simplistic for me to be thinking of it that way, but it does sound like a safe place for me to go.
They are indeed. As a Caribbean girl, alot of the culture reminded me of island life. Ppl inviting you to their homes for dinner, some dessert always being offered to you, tea or coffee. You can guarantee 8/10 times get hand knitted gifts which I loooveedd. Lots of my socks some mittens were handmade by ppl who gifted them to me at Christmas or my bday.
All my family is in Newfoundland i go 5 times a year from Nova Scotia

You have to love my native province. I am now an expat Canadian married to a Filipina and living in the Philippines. The culture, albeit very different, has some deeper common aspects with Newfoundland. This is my forever home; somewhat like Newfoundland under the palm trees, with consistant weather and temperatures between 27 and 33 degrees C. ❤

Processed foods are more expencive in newfoundland, but if you have the property, you can grow your own vegetables, raise chickens etc. Which makes the essentials potentially a lot cheaper.
I grew up in rural newfoundland, about 2 hours from corner brook, i have lived in toronto for 12 years or so now and have made very few real connections with anybody, your not lying at all.
Newfoundland and jamacia have a trading history that goes back a few centuries at least, they traded potatoes and salt cod and such for sugar and rum, and im sure more things im not aware of, it was easier at one time for ships to just sail up and down the coast stopping at outports along the way.
I grew up moving back and forth from toronto and corner brook. It was literally culture shock each time. The places changed with time but in such different ways. But the places are also completely different on their own.

I was born and grew up in Toronto. I also lived in St. John's for 4 years and travelled around the island of Newfoundland. I think both places have their benefits and disadvantages, it depends a lot on the life style you prefer and your ambitions in your career choice. One thing many people don't realize is that Newfoundland has some of the best golf courses in the world. Nothing like playing golf where you keep one eye on the ball and one eye on the bull moose standing 20 yards from you.
You’re absolutely right. It’s all about the lifestyle you want for you to ultimately pick somewhere to live.

I don’t live there anymore so I can’t really say what’s it like now but when I was there it wasn’t as easy as it depends on a factor of things. Your experience and if your class schedule will fit their work schedule for them to hire you. With COVID, it’s hard to say how easy jobs are to get now. Hope that helps

I’m a Newfie. I have something to say to warn any people of colour who move here for school. You WILL get stared at. It’s not usually racism. 95% of the time it’s just because there’s been no people of colour HERE for hundreds of years. We are as white as they come lol 😂 (Edit: Not saying that’s a good or bad thing, just the way it is)

I am a person of colour and just moved to NL! I have experienced microaggressions and racism quite a lot already and I have only been here for 4 months so far. I don't find people very open to speaking with me and I find it a lot harder to meet new people here. In Ottawa, I would go for a walk and by the time I came home I would have 5 extra phone numbers of new people I had met! I am so bewildered by it all because everyone says people here are so friendly. 🤷🏽♀️

It’s all I know and my entire 18 years of life I maybe seen a total of 2 or 3 people who weren’t white, it’s not that we’re racist (at least from what I know) it’s just we never get to see anyone else because of how cut off we are from the rest of Canada and the world, I could be wrong and we could just be a bunch of racists here lol but from my experience that’s probably why you get strange looks or treaded a bit differently

St.John's, hopefully, is working on fixing it's sidewalk winter snow clearing problem, one that made it highly dangerous for pedestrians in recent years. They were forced to walk out onto the roads. People living in the larger cities tended to take that 'perk' of sidewalk clearing for granted
Great point! Now that you mention it, that is something bigger cities take for granted. Sometimes there might be delays but it’s great to be able to go out and the side walks are already cleared.

Actually Ottawa streets also lack snow clearing. We often walked right out into the streets for fear of falling on icy snow filled sidewalks.

I lived in Ottawa for a long time. Weather is terrible. It would snow in December and that snow would never melt because of the cold cold temperatures.. Thus the sidewalks were icy until the spring thaw. At least in St. John’s there might be lots of snow but it would melt until next time. Ottawa and Montreal are bitterly cold in winter. It was a shock to my system when I first moved there from NL.
Now, Canada gives 2 years work permit to anyone who is willing to live and do any job in Atlantic Canada.
High school education is enough.
After 2 years, you can get Canadian PR.

finally someone that understands why food costs more in newfound land but from what i see its not much more than in NB my family in ontario are freaking out because im planning a move from fredericton to grand falls windsor newfoundland they're up in arms saying i cant afford the taxes and fod prices a quick serch of food flyers its the same and the taxes are the same at 15% husing costs are way lower and you get more home for that price even now with the canadian housing market how it is 2020 i bought my current place for $32,000 and have two offers on it for over $100,000

@@CharisMaggieTV yeah i learnt that a few years ago when i got tired of my family sabotaging my life in ontario so i sold my house in caledonia ontario moved 1000 miles or 1,552km away to oromocto NB then sold that house in 2020 and moved 15 minutes away to fredericton where i could pay off the mortgage and buy a home outright. however now the NB government is telling me to kill myself. they deny me a hemipalegic, disability benifits saying "we cant afford to give you the benifits you should apply for maid instead" that same government just posted an 800 million dollar surplus im fairly confident the $5,000 the benifits would have cost them would be feasible so im moving again to get away from that toxicity. and decided on newfoundland after watching a documentary about what happened there on 9/11. plus im 32 and retired so i dont need to find a job. had i listened and done everything my family said id still be in a wheelchair but because i didnt listen to them and took risks to get walking again i only use the wheelchair when im in to much pain to walk

I’ve been in Toronto for some time now, and I’ve never seen the amount of snow as I’ve seen when I was living in Corner Brook and for that length of time as well. I was very specific about what area of Newfoundland I was referring to as well
