PERFECT Background BLUR using Photoshop AI

Want to capture stunning portraits with beautifully blurred backgrounds, also known as bokeh? Achieving that professional touch can be challenging without the right equipment. Expensive lenses with wider apertures and better optical quality are usually required to achieve a shallower depth of field and smoother background blur.
Blurring the background is crucial to focus on the subject, separating it from the surrounding elements and reducing distractions. However, if your photo lacks depth and dimension, you can create a more three-dimensional effect by isolating the subject and blurring the background in post-processing.
In this photoshop tutorial, we will use the power of Photoshop AI to easily and quickly achieve a professional background blur. To get started, make sure you have Photoshop Beta installed. Begin by separating the background from the subject using the Lasso tool. Draw a rough selection around the subject, aiming for a general outline.
With the rough selection in place, click on "Generative Fill" in the taskbar. This AI-powered feature intelligently removes the subject from the background and replaces it with a separate layer. After generating the options, choose the desired variation, delete the layer mask, and fill in the blank areas.
Next, duplicate the background layer, merge it with the generative layer, and rename it "background." Select the original background, click on "Select Subject," and select the new background layer's layer mask thumbnail. Fade the background into a dreamy blur using the "Lens Blur" filter under the "Filter" menu.
If desired, repeat the lens blur process for a smoother background. The background blur highlights the subject and eliminates distractions, perfect for emphasizing details in portraits. Use a soft brush to add back any missed details by painting with black color.

Very nice video explaining the editing in a simple and easy to understand way.
In my opinion you should also try the neural depth blur to achieve an even more realistic looking picture. With the lens blur it looks like a cut-paste over a diffused background.

I had two persons that I wanted to blue their background but the problem is that there is a person in the background that wont go away with the blur filter! the problem appears when I press Select subject .. it automatically selects the two person and the person in the background... please help

Nice tutorial! I’m curious as to why you had the background layer on top of the subject layer instead of the other way around. Is there an advantage? Wouldn’t having the subject cut out with a mask on top of the blurred background layer achieve the same result?
Also after using generative fill to remove the subject, you could just use ctrl+alt+shift+e to stamp all visible layers to get the entire background layer faster. Then just delete the generative fill layer.

Good question! Absolutely, you can do it too! Keep in mind that Photoshop is a powerful software with numerous methods, shortcuts, and alternative approaches. You have the freedom to choose any method, and the results will ultimately be the same.

One thing to note is that in a real camera when there's a really blurred out background, the entire subject is never in focus due to how depth works, for example, the eyes are in focus but the ears and other body parts away from the focal plane of the eyes are a bit out of focus. We can use the field blur option to achieve this, this makes the blur look really natural.

The distance between the subject and background also plays a role. If the subject is too close to the camera then like you said entire subject is never in focus. If subject is little far to camera like in this tutorial, the subject may still be in focus and appear sharp.

This is good, but Tilt shift blur works pretty well in full shot pictures.

for full body shots i wouldnt recommend this... the natural falloff into the distance is missing in your example, the blur is too uniform across the frame. for headshots, or waist up its totally usable tho.

This is pretty much what iOS does in portrait mode. Sorry, but this effect looks totally artificial. Bokeh achieved with a lens on a camera is caused by decreasing the depth of field and the light diffraction around the aperture blades. Will AI eventually be able to reproduce this effect? It probably already can without all this work. This isn’t it.
