This is actually one of the better videos on discipline I've watched, and I've watched a bunch. Instead of just rambling free form, you structured it and presented it very nicely, visuals were top notch and I think I took away some valuable points from it. Please make more such videos on similar topics of achievement, success, fullfilment, happiness, spiritual strength, mental toughness and so on.

I didn’t have discipline growing up. I wasent forced to brush my teeth, I wasent grounded, I wasent forced to eat veggies and fruit. I wasent forced to clean. It’s brutal. I’ve just been going off motivation. My mom recently passed and I don’t have anyone else so that hit hard for me. I’ve realized I’m the only one to change anything. I’m working on my discipline and so far I’ve only started with working out. I’m down 75lbs in a year and I’m still doing but but it’s a lot slower now. I just need to go ahead and do everything else to catch up and once I start I believe I’ll be unstoppable. I just wish I grew up like this so my mom could see I’m not such a disappointment so she could be proud.

Fantastic, brother. Well done on losing the weight.
Parents are often afraid of instilling discipline in their children because they think their kids will grow to resent them. I believe it's better to have children who resent you, but who are prepared to cope with the realities of the world, than to have children who love you, but are useless to society.
I'm psyched to hear you've taken control of your life, brother. Keep it up.

I agree!!! That was such an eye opener, like nothing I've ever heard before. Once we take 20 steps back with 20 negative decisions, we would then have to take 20 positive steps forward, with 20 good decisions, just to be at the same place we started before our downward trajectory. THAT is why we feel hopeless, like we are not going anywhere and like it's pointless to even try. This actually blew my mind. This is why it feels like we are stuck, or not moving. If we go back and forth between + and - decisions, then we will really feel stuck, because ultimately we aren't moving. It will then feel like our goal is so far away that it's unobtainable.
Or, a person can take very big steps to move forward faster, but it's hard to do that. Taking the big steps can lead to us being overwhelmed and quitting. Anthony pointed that out as well.
I will never look at a decision in the same way again.

  • @chazlyle41

I think a strong helper instilled since being a kid was the idea that if something has to be done there is no decision. Getting rid of the decision process altogether and knowing you just have to do it, so just do it, made 90% of decisions non-factors. :)

I have watched hundreds of videos and read countless books about motivation and sometime last year I sort of just hit a wall. Nothing seemed to be seeping through and helping me make lasting positive change. Only fits and starts here and there. Then I was finally diagnosed with ADHD at 50. Honestly, after somewhat unsuccessfully trying to address that issue I had sort of settled into “this is just how I am” and making the positive changes necessary to ever accomplish anything lasting and real was simply not in the cards for me in this life.

Oh I love the idea of the +1 framework!
Also, I can confirm that the "Become the master and the slave" theory works and that it works very well (if you discipline yourself to do it daily). The only thing I do differently to emotionally detach myself from the activities that need to be done tomorrow is that I don't think of my tomorrow's self as myself. When I started practicing this I wrote a note for my future selves that summarizes this thinking... "You only live today. That's it. Tomorrow? That's not you, that's tomorrow's Jacob. Your time to do something is today. Do the best you can to move closer to your goals and help tomorrow's Jacob to do the same." It helps me with being grateful to my yesterday's me for doing the decision-making for me and motivates me to do the same for my tomorrow's me. It also helps with actually trying my best to follow the plan I have for the day.
(Btw I didn't come up with this "one day-one life" way of thinking, Seneca did.)

    • @AnthonyVicino
      @AnthonyVicino  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Same. i'm not sure where I got this particular framework, but Seneca seems a very likely influence.
I used to say that my only job is to live my day in a way that Future-Anthony doesn't look back at Past-Anthony and want to kick his ass!

Focus is my No. 1 goal and I totally agree about the fact that getting out distractions is the key to focus, it is all a mix of not wanting to start because we see the task too big for us and we procrastinate. Discipline is the key to everything, to the whole universe within ourselves, mastering it is a great adventure that I'm loving it. i've been learning to improve myself for the past few years, videos like yours really help me when i think i'm loosing track of my progress or start to slow down. thank you for this insite, i struggle with self disipline and i'm going to use some of your structures to help push myself further. my favorite was the "become the master and the slave" planning the next day for myself so i don't have to use the mental capacity the next day and keep my productivity up. thank you again for this :)

I am subscribed. I will study your video, make notes, and prepare myself to learn discipline. I made already some steps in the right direction, like quitting drinking not so long ago (I don’t need this). My next step will be sell stuff to make space in my apartment. After years of procrastination I was buying books that I never had the time and the discipline to read. I will get rid of this stuff.
My goal is to write a book based on a PhD thesis I finished in 2015. This is 8 years ago, unbelievable! I had a burnout after this and didn’t have the discipline to go back to work.
This is what I will do tomorrow soon after having my coffee: watch the video again and make notes, prepare the stuff I want to sell, and plan my next step.
One step after the other, and every decision is important- I got it 😊
Thanks for the video, it is exactly what I need right now!

Off topic, I LOVE the city scenes you show in your videos, and the vibe of the music as you walk along the city you live in. Is this New York? It's gorgeous! I'm from the midwest and we have Kansas City which is great. But, we are lacking a subway system, and our downtown is relatively small compared to big cities. I feel this ambience you show in your videos adds to who you are, and what you are about. Thank you for including this in your videos!
