I’ve got some pan pastels and love them. The paper I’ve found best is Clairefontaine pastelmat paper. Takes loads of layers. Another tip was mixing colours on a spare bit of paper. The artist I was following suggests using cotton buds for blending. Cheap and readily available. I find pastels great for blending, achieving great vibrant colours and use them for laying down a base to work on for detail.
Yes. Pastelmat is used by a lot of artists and is so good. I’ve found using the Pans as a base and pastel pencils for details works best . Jason Morgan has some great videos showing techniques
The one thing that stands out for me is to “let go of expectations and just try stuff. Push through the ugly stage and you’ll come to a better place.” Part of that is paraphrasing, but I think I have the sentiment correct. I’ve never taken art classes, so I’m absolutely clueless. And I admit to feeling way out of my comfort zone when I first started watching your channel. But now, I just enjoy the heck out of watching you create.
Yesssssss, Marsha!!!! You totally get it! I am so so happy that you stuck with my channel! We all get in our own heads so much that we often stand in our own way. Thanks so much for watching!
You are the one who put the name on the "ugly phase" for me. Prior to that I had figured out that sometimes if I didn't like my project I could put it away for a day or two then come back and finish it strong. Now I know my work will likely have an ugly phase that I can work through and I share that with others! Thanks Karen! BTW, he turned out great
@@KarenCampbellArtist yes, thank you for that! Thinking you know it is still different than seeing a professional artist that you respect go through it too! That is probably one of the biggest lessons I've learned and it's changed my art to a whole new level! It improved my confidence but more importantly I don't let flops deter me anymore! You are literally the only artist I've ever heard say it out loud!
HEY LOOK AT YOU GO! Im SOOO STOKED you are doing PanPastels!! I just got a 60 set (with the others coming after xmas.) I've only played with them a few times and I am over the moon with them!! Holy smokes they are like satin silk and with so much pigment, I'll probably never use every color in 5 years. I watched a few videos on the Sofft tools vs Makeup tools. Made a lot of sense why the PP tools work so much better. I absolutely ADORE that you are unafraid to show us your struggles. It remains my favorite thing about you. I cant wait to see you do more videos with these. (FYI I tried regular paper, sketchbook paper, and Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300. I've not tried anything with tooth yet because my illustrated children's book is gunna be a mixed media project of sorts, so practicing with the SBS is heading me to my goal.) KEEP ON PASTELin, my friend. Blessings to you from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood Washington!
It is beautiful! For pastels the best sand paper is Pastel mat pad. They are amazing! Try it please you will become in love with it! It works with lots of mediums! Thanks for your teaching!❤️
Thanks for watching, Jaye! I have gotten some good ideas from other viewers about other papers to try as well, so feel free to scroll through comments to see the other suggestions that people have liked.
This turned out awesome! When I saw you were going to use pan pastels I was like-yes! Then when you said you were using your paper, it was -girl whaaaat??! But you made it work! I’m watching this in March 2022 so you’ve probably tried sanded paper by now and I’m going to look for that video next :) I have the 20 set of pan pastels and used them just once (so far) on Carson Mi Tienes toned pastel paper. They worked great for layering and blending colors but even with pastel paper I found myself frustrated that I ran out of tooth for more layers. I have a sample of sanded paper and I can tell you that the difference between the three (in my humble opinion) is this: yupo is like a sheet of glass. Pastel paper is like a baby toothbrush and sanded paper (from touch alone) is like an Astro turf mat. Pan pastels are like compressed powder, so the more tooth, the more layers and the darker you can get things. I have no patience for colored pencils but pan pastels are an amazingly fast way to lay out large areas of color! And I love how the neo color II crayons layered over them! I love your channel!
I am beside myself you are trying pan pastels. Who told you YOPO? BUT I will say yopo is great for finding out your dos and do nots.all in all you did great. OMG, sanded paper is a dream for an artist in pastels.you are a very fast learner. I no you will be great at this, looking forward to your progress. I hope you will love this. I'm on board if you start a new class program. Word to the wise this can make a person pull there hair out crying. Susan Jenkins is a goddess with pastels, only she loves the soft and hard sticks. She does like pan, so there for she mixes. You can't have only pan you must have sticks I learned the hard way. Also they have paper just for pastels. All so there is an under painting, my favorite WATERCOLOR. You have so much to learn. I'm having fun just watching you.allso pipe lining yes from the hard wear store great for blending. You just cut it into phases, Bethany another goddess gave us all this method. And you are an artist Goddess, please give this a change. I will follow you up that dusty road. Love 💘 this THANK YOU. JUDY.
I’m so glad you did this video. I just purchased a set of pan pastels a few months ago and have only played around with them briefly. I’m an outliner at the end to. I always do it with watercolor and these pan pastels seem perfect for outlining at the end. Nice job on your piece here.🤗🥰
This is so cool because I love pan pastels. I have used yupo paper once but found you can't erase on Yupo. It's primarily used for alcohol inks.No erasing there. Pan pastels work great on anything toothy like Bristol and even watercolor paper. I use pastelmat. Sanded paper is too expensive for me plus the sofftools get ruined in no time. Eventually I'm planning on doing a landscape with pan pastels but I don't have all the colors yet. Thank you for being fearless in experimenting, and your guy is awesome!!
First of all thank you for sharing this video is a lot of fun to watch he did a great job, especially on the type of paper you used. I know this video is a few months old, so you probably already know what I’m about to tell you lol. It’s a lot easier to use them if you do your drawing first on a separate piece of paper, then cover the back of that sketch with a pan pastel layer , white pastel if on a colored paper, or darker if on white or light paper. The just draw over your sketch to transfer the image in pastel, because graphite doesn’t like to be covered with pastel. Clairefontaine paper is best but super pricey, sanded paper is decent. Th li tientes paper is decent also. I also like using pastel pencil with the pan pastels to do detailing. But like I said you probably know this by now lol. I love your channel, your tutorials and videos are so fun and give me so much inspiration. I’ve got a couple of your books now as well and love them💜💜ty so much! And love how this turned out 😁
Your videos are wonderful--you are such an inspiration and I love your approach to teaching. I have learned so much from you. I am in awe of how much you accomplish--2 You Tube channels, your art school(s), writing books, family....I admire your dedication. I have found Pan Pastels to work well on almost every surface including watercolor paper, sanded paper, bristol vellum, encaustic board, and Canson MiTientes pastel paper. Never thought to try it on Yupo. I like the Pitt pens on Yupo the best, but excited to try the Neo11's with Yupo. Thanks again for all you do.
Wow, I applaud you for trying yupo paper with pan pastels. My first thought was nothing will stick, no grit at all. I was surprised how it turned out. I recently started learning about pan pastels and Uart 600 sanded paper is the bomb with pan pastels. Hardly any dust (which can be toxic) and blends like a dream. The paper just seems to absorb the pastel like a magnet. And don't seal it, at least not the last layer, or you will lose the light. I learned the hard way. Thank you for trying new things and sharing with us!
Great of you to try pastels on yupo, i did yupo or photopaper with alcohol ink, did yersterday learn to use pastelmat paper or water sandpaper 1200 for pastels, still have to buy a few panpastels , watch a lot of Dutch teachers using the panpastels, did enjoy your slippery tutorial, love that guy, love R
Thank you for this video, yes I have a set of pastels , I was using for just final shades as they are so smooth, but wow, you actually use them in the full painting yes we learn so much thank you for this video, Fabulous 👌 👏
Hi Karen, I’ve been watching you for a few months and I am learning so much. Thank you! I was wondering what kind of substance should I prime a metal picture, I am wanting to “mixed media-up” an ugly metal pic I got from goodwill. Not sure where to begin so things stick. Thanks again! You have so much talent with art and teaching.
I just bought my first pad of yupo paper the other day. I’ve owned pan pastels for two years. Yupo paper would be the last paper I would use.. 😂 I’ve found pastelmat or colourfix has the best amount of layering. I found you because Les Darlow is using Watercolour OVER pans instead of as an underpainting. Can not find a video about it without watching a sped up video of his. Guess I’m going to experiment myself! 😂😂 You’re so much fun and definitely worth subscribing to your channel.. We kinda think the same..
I’m new to Pan Pastels, too. People seem to love the sanded papers with these, but they eat up your Sofft tools very quickly! I’ve only played with pans on Canson Mi-Teintes paper and on watercolor paper. I’m going to try and apply a pastel ground on watercolor paper. I’ve seen that demoed once. I love your experimenting!
I used watercolor paper with a coat of clear Gesso applied with a roller… a good way to cut cost down a little bit… oh and a Staedler eraser works well to erase panpastels
I would like to try the 3/4 face again,as mine has not been so great!🥴.. Thank you so much for sharing the directions and any tips that you can send me!💕
Pastel LOVES tooth. Smooth surfaces are a challenge with pastel. Pastel mat and sanded paper are good friends with all things pastel. Sanded can be frustrating when you are not used to it, but it will be far better than slick. Definitely consider some good quality pastelmat as well.
Hiya! May I please have the 3/4 view cheat sheet? Thank you SO much! I just got a bunch of YUPO samples and you should try them with alcohol markers. Be just a bit patient between layers and they have the most amazing effects! Also, prismacolors overtop are brighter and creamier. 🖤🖤🖤🍓 xo

What’s the difference between pan pastels and the stick chalk pastels please?
PanPastels are specifically formulated - they are a super fine art product and that brand is the ONLY brand! They are truly one of a kind. Stick chalk pastels are just that, pastels I stick form (also comes in pencils) and can vary widely by brand, quality and price. But the essence of the materials are the same: they are both chalk pastels just usable in different forms (like watercolors can come in a stick, pan, pencil, tube, marker, etc - just the form that they come in and the way that you apply them is different).
If you get silcone eye makeup applicators brushes you might have a better layering affect targert walmart has makeup sets in stores
Cool tip, thanks Marc!
