I really like the use of the pan pastels for pushing the background back and making it hazy. It worked so well on the trees.
Thank you Emma! It's such an effective little technique and makes it look like I spent far longer on it that is actually the case 😂
I love the effect you get when you mix different mediums! I really love your style.❤
Thank you so much! 🥰
The greenhouse turned out beautifully! You really used the pastels so well. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much! Really pleased with that greenhouse piece 😊
I just started using Pan Pastels, and this is real helpful!
So happy to hear! Thank you for watching 🥰
Love the greenhouse! Such a peaceful feeling.
Thank you so much! I love it when my art gives those vibes 🥰
Another creative and inspiring video, thanks Katie!!❤

Thank you so much Anne! 🥰 Hope it helps!
that tree landscape is gorgeous!! wonderful colours🥰
Thank you!! I loved how calming that one turned out 😊
Your video popped up on my screen like 2 minutes after I passed by my Pan Pastels in my art cart and was wondering how they would work in my art journal. (I've been painting with watercolors for years and finally jumped into journaling.) Your video was just brilliant in showing how all of these mediums I've been collecting can be put to use together! I love your greenhouse!!! Thanks for sharing Katie and for popping up exactly when I needed you! I will definitely be checking out more of your videos!
Aaah what perfect timing Linda! I'm really enjoying creating and experimenting with them - they feel like a solid part of my artists kit now which I wasn't expecting! I hope you enjoy using them when they arrive too 🤩 Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment! 😊
Beautiful work, Katie!
Thank you so much! 😊
I have a few pan pastels and am always looking for ways to incorporate them. Thank you for generously sharing your techniques, materials and thought process as you create.
You're welcome, thank you for watching! I hope it helps 💜
This was really inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing! I am only starting with soft pastels (not the pan pastels just yet..) and am really enjoying using them. They are so versatile and make such soft gradients and blends! I was really intrigued about using them with other media.. I am definitely going to have to experiment more! I hope you are having a wonderful day! ^^
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment! 💜 I started with soft pastel sticks too and then moved onto the pan pastels, it really does create a texture I haven't been able to replicate with other mediums! I find this experimental and discovery phase so much fun. I hope you enjoy it too! 🤗
Love Pans Pastels ❤️ I use them for OOAK Monster high dolls and also action figures that I customising. Great video!!
Oh I absolutely love watching videos of doll customisation, it's so so clever! I love how varied the application of art supplies can be 😃
very informative and inspiring! thanks for sharing ur tips ^^
Thank you so much for watching, Asha! So glad it was useful 😊
It’s possible to use eye shadow and bronzing palettes instead of pan pastels. It’s less expensive and maybe for some hobby artists a good alternative ;)
Thank you for sharing all these tips and your thoughtful videos, I am currently in binge watching mode and in total aww of your way to approach your beautiful art style 😍
Thank you so much for watching and for that great tip about eye shadows! So glad you're enjoying my videos 🥰
I wondered That. As I Have It An Don't Use Anymore
Thank You
This was so inspiring! Beautiful greenhouse! I‘m also full into mixed media and I’m very interested in these pan pastels for a while.. it was very good to watch how you use them. I would enjoy another pan pastel- mixed media video 😊
Aaah thank you so much! It's been a real learning curve how to use them but I'm so excited now I know how to combine them with my current style. I'm sure I'll use them a lot in future videos 😊
@@KatieMoody That sounds great! 😊
Ive seen where airbrush thinner makes it like paint., even regularpastel..gonna try today
Oh interesting!! I'd love to know how it went!
Very nice vide, so interestings tips😍😍
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Beautiful
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you for sharing this very informative video on pan pastels, Katie. If you were to recommend one color for someone who wanted to try them out for the first time, what would it be? I create most of same subject matter that you do (landscapes, nature, etc.).
Thanks Lisa, so glad it was useful! Oooooh just one pan pastel - so difficult to choose!! I'd probably say the 220.1 Hansa Yellow Ex. Dark especially if you draw similar subjects to me - it's such a lovely green and I think I've used it the most for my landscapes!
I am in the Pacific Northwest and this time of the year we are surrounded by mist. I feel like pan pastels would be perfect to capture that atmosphere. I was curious about something - do you need to use fixatives to keep the pastels from coming off of the page? Do they ever transfer to the opposite page with the sketchbook closed? Also, do you ever use the brush pens over the pan pastels? If so, do they ruin or impact the brush tip? Or do you always use pan pastels over the brush pens and not the other way round? I hope you don't mind all the questions!
No worries at all, ask away! 😊 I love using them to create a haze or to push back elements in my work so it would definitely work for mist - it adds so much atmosphere! I've found the pastel does smudge over time and fade in my sketchbook, probably where I'm working in other pages and the pressure rubs it off. It doesn't remove the pan pastel completely but it's definitely not as strong over time. A fixative spray would definitely help with that though personally I don't like using it in my sketchbook as I find the smell too strong!
I don't often use brush pens over pan pastels but I have before, and it works just fine! I expect with a lot of use it would affect the brush pen tip though as it does pick up the pastel particles, so might clog or dry it out eventually. Generally I either use pan pastels as my main base layer with neocolors and pencils on top, or I use it as my finishing layer to create distance in my backgrounds. Hope that helps! 😄
@@KatieMoody this is super helpful, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge! ❤️
Thanks Katie...do the pan pastels need Fixative to avoid transferring to adjoining pages in a sketchbook?
The hazy effect is genius
Thank you for watching! I personally don't fix them in my sketchbook, but you can use a spray fixative if you really don't want it to budge! It smudges off a but so it's not quite such a strong effect, but the haziness is still obvious! They kind of just sink into the page a bit more but I've not had much issues with it at all without fixing 😊
@KatieMoody thanks Katie...much appreciated 👏
Awesome. I have been looking for ways to use soft pastels with other mediums and this was very interesting.
What do you use to fix the panpastels?
Thanks so much! I don't fix my work generally, so it does smudge off a bit though still clear that there's pastel on the page especially where I've worked it in! When I do use fixative I use the Jacksons Art Pastel Fixative spray 😊
5:45 lovely small sketches
Love all the different things you can do with pan pastels, recently bought two colours to try for myself. Do you use some sort of sealant over the pan pastels?
They are such a versatile medium! I don't use sealant in my sketchbook for pan pastels - sometimes I find they rub off and fade slightly over time from the other pages, but generally they last really well!
@@KatieMoody Thank you for replying. I plan on trying them in my sketchbook to start anyway. So maybe I don’t need a sealant just to play around in my sketchbook 😊
Do you have videos where you show how did you paint the two fantastic paintings at 1:44?
Thanks so much! I don't for the one on the left but the right one was recorded for a walkthrough video on my Patreon!
How did you keep the pastel from smudging afterwards when you closed the sketchbook?
I don't mind a bit of smudging - sometimes I put in blank pieces of paper in between the pages so it transfers on to that instead of the art! You can use a fixative but I prefer not to 😊
