Honoring Adonai: a History of the Kippah

  • Traditional and highly recognizable headwear of the Jewish faithful, the kippah is a small skullcap that is typically worn during prayer, though some more devout, especially in Israel, will wear it at all times as an expression of their faith and identity.
    Version française : • Honorer Adonai: l'hist...
The kippah I'm wearing was given to me by friends from Israel, who also kindly helped me with the Hebrew translation at the beginning, and made sure I got cultural details right.

A lot of it has to do with how you dress the rest of yourself. Just wearing the Kippah, but with baggy jeans, sweatshirt, and sunglasses might make him look odd. Combining it with the dress shirt and jacket though fits the "idea" most people have of a Jew wearing the Kippah so it helps reinforce it.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate and enjoy your channel. Truly an example of the absolute best of what TH-cam can offer. Some of the things that make Hat Historian so great:
    1) Accuracy and completeness. So many times, when watching these videos, I've wondered "is he going to mention xxx" - only for that very fact to be raised in the next sentence. No nonsense, no clickbait. Just the facts - with a very entertaining delivery.
    2) The right length. Ten to 15 minutes is about the right length of time to be talking about a type of hat.
    3) Humor. The perfect level of slightly droll humor helps personalise these stories.
    4) Physical props. It sure helps to see our host wearing a pristine example of the exact chapeau he's talking about. No doubt some of these were more than a little difficult to procure.
    5) Foreign language. Tip of my hat to the host for having the courage, and the linguistic skill, to offer up a short speech in all sorts of languages, from Russian to Hebrew, with admirable (if not always perfect) pronunciation.
If (the US cable) History Channel had an ounce of sense or decency, they'd offer our host a pile of Hollywood money and make a few seasons on the history of hats. Although, on reflection, we'd also need a female co-host to offer up her view on ladies millinery.

It was the one made in the 1970s and was a like, peak musical movie era of the 1970s right before musicals pretty much stopped and, well anyway it was so well done! Probably watched it at least ten times. “Traaaaaaaaaditionnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!”😅 But yah you were humming the one song in the intro. And then Gwen Stefani also remixed it about a decade ago, and I am sure many people knew where it came from but also, I am sure many folks my age had no idea what a fiddler on the roof was and went around humming Gwen Stefani’s silly pop version still.

I studied french language years ago, before Google translate made learning another language practically pointless, and enjoy the workout it gives my memory. 'Kippah' in Hebrew means "Dome" in the Talmud (Jewish religious book) it means "prison" in reference to prisons at a time when their roofs were domed.
Yamulke comes from Aramaic "Yarei Malke" = "fear of the king" as in reference to showing servitude by hiding the top of the head as a mark of respect.

Kippah (כיפה) is Hebrew for dome. Kippat Barzel means the Irone Dome. There is a Russian word купол (kupol) which probably derives from the Latin word cupola. The Russian word кепка (kepka) is probably a Germanism -- keppe is the German word. The word kashket (кашкет) is Ukrainian for cap, it could be a Polonism, but it seems to me this word is of French origin -- casquette -- the source word. I am not a linguist and all I can say is that these words sound pretty similar to me.

also, requesting an American beanie one if I may. Possibly in your pipeline already I’d imagine. Because I just watched Ushanka episode and that was super cool. Then it triggered a memory of when I had my grandpa’s US Navy issued beanie. Hmmm well it may have been my great uncle’s his brother. Anyway, I wore that thing out pretending to be a WWII army-navy hero when I was a small child😅. But also how the beanie is pretty much like the standard winter head piece in America at least and comes in so many wonderful fashion flavors nowadays, in addition to all the other types of hats being available of course. Also, an Akron hat? sorta like a type of beanie but I saw it at a store and I thought hmmmmm never heard of an Akron hat!? Like, Akron, Ohio, I suppose. Rust belt history maybe. Also, a welder cap! Highly wide spread. But also sort of under the radar. And you could do your intro with a real welder machine and and then take up the visor and then show the welder cap underneath and it would be so much fun!😅

If it’s small and you’re bald it usually stays on well enough anyway, especially since a lot of the time it’s worn indoors, so you don’t have to worry about wind blowing it off etc

Just cause it felt like it was unclear: The coat of arms he showed with the stereotypical Jewish face is the current coat of arms for Judenburg, Austria, not the coat of arms of a Jewish family or community. Jews were subjected to multiple pograms there and then expelled from the territory in the 15th Century. This particular image should not be mistaken as a point of pride in any way.

Bonus points for using the Hebrew feminine plural, "-ot" for kippot, instead of the English "-s" to pluralize "kippah"!!
That tall Pileus Cornutus reminds me of the unique shape of the Layap hat worn by some women in the mountains of Bhutan

In Nederland is het nu ook gevaarlijk om een keppeltje op straat te dragen. Ook is het gevaarlijk te zeggen wie de daders zijn.

That seems to be a common problem in Dutch-speaking lands. When I was in Belgium I was received kindly in Wallonia, but as soon as I entered Flanders it was like I had a constant target on my back.

I've watched the 1970 Jesus of Nazareth miniseries several times, and have noticed that the Jewish male characters tended to wear crocheted kippahs/yarmulkes, similar to the crocheted beanie hats I make (although in plain white, not the colorful yarns I use). Not sure if a crocheted kippah would have been period-correct for the 1st century AD, however.

This was a very interesting video some of the rules remind me of a Sikh friend I had who was required to wear a hat at all times, his personal choice being a baseball cap. If possible, I would like to see a video on a Catholic bishop's hat. I've seen a few things online about how it's actually a Babylon priest hat. While I know that's not the case, I am interested to know how it came to be.

Another very informative video. Attitudes on covering or uncovering the head in terms of religious respect varies, in Waltham Abbey church, North of London, I received a severe rebuke from a member of staff after entering wearing a hat! As a side note 'Adonai', meaning rulers, masters or lords (singular 'adon') is from Ugaritic not Hebrew, Aramaic or Yiddish, as Jews were forbidden to say the Hebrew name of God, written YHWH, so needed an alternative.

In these bleak days, I appreciate anyone who makes videos educating about Judaism. So I thank you, and I'm sharing that.
And don't mind the dislikes, these are just your garden variety antisemites.
Your video is excellent and very informative!
Also, extra points for using the Hebrew plural for 'kippa', - 'kippot'!
    👍

oh that's interesting, it's encouraged to borrow one if one doesn't normally wear one. i'm glad i wouldn't have to guess what's desired since in this the modern day i'd first assume it might be an insult and seen as cultural appropriation to wear one if one isn't jewish. cool to know it's...cool to wear one. 🙂
