Thanx Will, That was really helpful. I really need to work had in tracing the logos in illustrator. Curves are really time taking and doesn't give the desired output if not done correctly. :)
Great video, I've been having trouble finding how to turn back on the guides lines for alignment. (the ones that show the centre and alignment points)

There have been several inquiries about the ruler. I cannot find one that splits in the middle like yours. Can you please let us know what brand ruler you are using or what it's called? I do calligraphy and this would change my world.... Great video and very informative.
Can anyone tell me the purpose of transparent paper? I thought some used tracing paper to redo/edit their hand drawn logos, but it seems he just starts with a rough draft and refines it without tracing paper?

you could benefit from a drafting table with a built in t-square bar. it would help you lay out your lines and guides quickly. they make portable ones and foldable ones etc. thanks for the vid, even though i'm 4 years late in my comment.

How can i find the book?
Question: I have a client who is has expressed an interest in me updating his logo. He is a DJ with a very solid block typeface, kinda graffiti styled logo at the moment with an outdated gold gradient. I'd love to do a whole new logo for him but he wants to retain the basic text shape as he's used the outline in solid black on a number of projects which would be expensive to replace. Do you have any suggestions on styling the text in a modern way?

The ruler is a carpenters ruler 😊
"Schöne Schreibschrift" means "Beautiful handwriting/script" and is pronounced like SCH like CHina, REIB like ripe, SCH again like CHina, and RIFT similar to rift.
try this: translate.google.com/?hl=de#de/en/sch%C3%B6n . You can listen to the word on google translate. Its hard to explain the ö-sound in english.
I think 'China' is the wrong word to use as an example, as Germans pronounce it differently than english speakers. I'd say the 'sch's are much more like the 'sh' in shingle, for example. Depending on region and dialect of course.

It's not shrieb khryft. It's Sh-khr-eyb Sh-khr-ift. xD It's not a weird font. It's the kind of writing the developed out of the Carolingian minuscule since around 700 AD and the Holy Roman Empire. It's heritage is that of the Latin script used in old Rome. And it's the form that most if not all modern Western or Latin glyphs are evolved from.
