    I am an artist that doesn't just meant I paint or draw, I do those things but what it means is I like to create. I have made beds, pantries, coat racks and other things. I have only just begun fooling around with metal working so far turning a railroad spike I found into a tomahawk. Great videos!

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have always loved Space Marine armor....especially the embellishments. I do incorporate some of that into some of my designs, but a full on "legit" piece of SM armor would be huge and heavy...even if scaled down to reasonable proportions. I do have plans to make a Power Glove at some point....not a copy of anything but something similar in design

    As I understand it, dishing can thin the material some- do these patterns work as well/the same with raising techniques?

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a common thought among metalworkers, but I assure you there is so little thinning that it won't matter at all. As far as using raising instead, it's all about the technique and the abilities of the person doing the raising/dishing. The template works for both.

    Would a pear shaped plastic mallet help reduce the amount of planishing needed when shaping the curves?

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely. However they are harder to get the deep curves needed when it comes to armor. They wok better on a motorcycle tank or car panels. I do still use one, but not often.

    Salute David! Thank you for great content , so can you please make a Warhammer 40k space marine helmet?

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the style of everything in the 40k universe, and I do use some similar design ideas when I make some of my armor (check out the Superhero Breastplate and my Pauldron). As for a legit copy of a Space Marine helmet, I doubt I will ever do that. When I copy things I sort of have to offer my templates as free templates, and I have no idea why, but those videos with free templates do poorly.

    • @arnjonatan
      @arnjonatan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Guyton I have already checked your all videos , they are all institutional , interesting and beautiful. Guess there is two things a man can watch eternally 1st - how the campfire burns.
      2nd - how you crate these masterpieces.
      Back in the topic I would offer you at list to try one , as I am planing to build an real size endoskeleton armoured with 20 gage still space marine armor.
      For the beginning I will start from a 40k guardsman's armour.
      And of course as an engineer I keep planing to make an additional servo manipulator arm , that could be carried on back and controlled with neuro sensors.
      With mantling this I just like to represent the idea of bringing to life of 40k content and at the same time to find for them a practical use with farther modifications for far more adapted life usage.

    Will you ever use sliding rivits for your builds? Not helmet nor bevor per say but gauntlets with basic rivits lack full mobility. Your builds look amazing but they could also move amazing as well.
    Btw. Its not hate just objective comment

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used them in the past. I try to keep the builds a little simpler so that people can make them easier. Popping a hole is a lot easier than making a curved slit. If the situation calls for it though, I will do it again

    If I may ask, that yellow English Wheel looks like the one Harbor Freight sells. Can you verify that and that it is adequate for planishing even 14-16 ga. steel for armoring?

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and yes. There are actually several manufacturers that sell the exact same one just with different paint. When I got mine, HF had discontinued the lower wheels (???) Not sure if they sell them again, but I just bought mine off Amazon or Ebay, I forget which.

    • @johncannon3593
      @johncannon3593 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidGuyton Awesome - thanks. Were you able to get the extra wheels/anvils or have you even found the need for them?
      I just bought a few of your templates after a few years of watching your videos and now I am prepared to start work on my armor, but given time constraints of life, work, and other hobbies, I think the English Wheel will speed the process significantly over hand-planishing.

    • @DavidGuyton
      @DavidGuyton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The English Wheel is my favorite tool in my shop, and worth every penny. I was able to get the lower wheels, just not from Harbor Freight. You will definitely want the additional wheels because it only comes with a 2" radius lower wheel. That works for most stuff but if you want to shape a wider curve, a larger diameter lower wheel is much more appropriate. I use a 6" one most of the time. Also, an English Wheel has this sort of "legend" about it where you can put straight metal into it and curve it in both directions. This is technically true, but in order to get tight, small curves like armor has (as opposed to a body panel on a car, where the curves are larger), you will still need to hammer on the metal in a dishing stump before you take it to the English Wheel. If you tried to shape flat metal and turn it into a helmet ONLY using the English Wheel...you are not going to be happy about the project. But hammer it out first to get a basic shape, then work it on the Wheel....you're going to love that.

    • @johncannon3593
      @johncannon3593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DavidGuyton Awesome. My dishing stump is almost complete. Also, I am a hobbyist blacksmith looking to branch out into armor, so I am no stranger to hammering metal and have the capacity to do hot work if needed on my coal forge.
      Thanks for the pointers!
      I've always wanted to do some armor and your videos showed me that "regular" guys can do it without a ton of specialized equipment.

I currently have my daughter nagging me for some to which I’ve got the Design and mechanics down a simple corsentinia effect ( a fan in reverse) using aluminium wings /fans with some linkages to each wing to help spread them, rather than fabric, both wings run of a single actuator ( for now ) with a chain link to the top as pivot.

      Apart from fact, that some gothic bevors were made in one piece, it is pretty close to historically accurate version of segmented bevor. Only major difference i see on most of them is size of bottom plate, which was usually longer and a bit wider to cover more area. As of aesthetic, it is a bit more domed and top edge was mostly flat.
      As a practically homemade piece of armour it is really amazingly good looking.
