I want to thank you most sincerely. All my life I have yearned to make, not buy, make my own armor. And the idea laid dormant in my mind for decades, until I came across your videos. It filled so many blanks about how to actually fabricate the steel. I won't be using any of your templates. I think they are awesome, but I think I should rely on my own design. I just wanted to thank you however, for pointing me in the right direction! EXCELSIOR!

It's also not as expensive as you might think, particularly if you plan on making a hobby out of this. The tools are a little bit of an up-front investment, but they'll last for a very long time and have other uses. The metal itself is quite cheap. Apart from that, I've learned from my own experience making mock-up boffer lightsabers that making something that looks good isn't so much about talent or skill so much as trial-and-error and patience.
I made this mask and a matching lower jaw peice for my samurai kabuto and your tutorial was a FANTASTIC guide. I freehanded the shape and it still worked out well.

Damn son, that's pretty brutal . I just wanted to thank you for giving me the final push into wanting to make armour. I'm looking into joining some reenactors and maybe making armour for heavy combat.
+David Guyton Awesome tutorial! 2 short questions: - Which type of steel are you using? Is it rustproof? - And what to use as rivets? Everything I tried so far just bent...
This is regular sheet steel you can get from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It's not stainless and will rust if you leave it outdoors. For rivets you can use any kind of metal rid cut to length. I sometimes just use nails. In this case, it's 1/4" copper rod. It just takes some time getting used to how rivets work. If they are always bending, you probably are cutting them too long. Try them a little shorter and see how they do.
im not an armorer, or metal smith but i am a apprentice leather crafter and because of this video i have an idea now on what i want to try out of leather for a helmet ty for this video
Awesome looking helmet. If I ever make one I think I might use a different metal for the face plate. Like copper or brass for a different metal color. Beautiful job making that!
Imagine armies marching out or ambushing through fog or a forest with these on and ragged looking chainmail on who the fuck wouldn't be scared at this era?
I can imagine them running into an army with MY attempt at this design also, actually that would be equally effective but instead of them being scared to death they all started laughing to death :) But I had fun trying anyway and that was worth a lot too, I don't feel the need to have something to show afterwards, the process in itself was reward enough for me! And next time perhaps will be better. Damn, I lack that piece of artist in me unfortunatly. I have to focus on armour that is without those extra artistic pieces, although all armouring need some artistic skill there are those that need more than others!
A thing that has always perplexed me even though I work as an artist and I love physics is just how fluid hard surfaces really are. As you are molding, refining, and shaping your piece, it's almost like working with very stiff clay --at least from my perspective as I watch this thing take shape.
yeah people are always surprised at how easy it is to move metal around once you start hammering on it. It can be stubborn at times but mostly it does what you want it to do

I was waiting to get to the teeth to see how on Earth they were done. A socket, chisel and hammer. WOW. Mind blown. Just one question: How did you cut out the eyes? I'm guessing the tin snips, but how did you make the initial incision?
Actually the eyes were started with a large drill bit. Put twp holes close together and you can snip out the little piece of metal between them, making a bigger hole. That hole is large enough to get the snips in there and start cutting. After you get all the metal out that you can, use a Dremel tool or files to perfect the shape
I've watched this video so many times. Today, I'm finally going to have a crack at making it. Love your work and doubt this will be the last one of your pieces I attempt to replicate.

nice work , couple of tips use the dog spike in the square hole on your anvil or make square tapered ones of different size domes to drop in, your vice will NOT take the beating aswell as the anvil , also use the flapper wheel to dish out a concave dome shape into your timber stump then dome your flat hammer buy one called a bossing hammer and you WILL cut your plenishing time down , great video nice work ,and yes 34 years panel beating
I remember the first time I met an SCA blacksmith back in the last century, he was one of a very small number of people doing anything like this. Now it seems like an entire industry has developed around this kind of stuff.
Nice! I just discovered your videos. I love metal shaping, I'm getting a bit more practice and improving and loved picking up a few tips from you. Definitely going to use a bit of rubber between the anvil and the piece. Makes total sense. And the socket is a nice thing. Sometimes you end up using something that is lying around and it works. The helmet is gorgeous! Thanks.
Hi. Just watched your skull helmet video. Thoroughly enjoyed it! You are superb at doing this. That’s the best skull helmet I’ve seen. I know how much personal skill it must take to do this as well.- not just anyone with a hammer and sheet metal! You could be quite wealthy selling these on eBay, there’s be no shortage of buyers! +David Guyton Please make it, I would appreciate that too.
any word on the song xD
Sounds sick!
Reminds me of the Shao Kahn helmet from the old Mortal Kombat movie. Good job man.
You look like member of Wild Hunt from Witcher 3. Like and sub for you :3
very nice design and almost hypnotic watching the making of it!
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
I find myself in some strange places on TH-cam and this is one of them (in a good sense tho), but I'm a stickler for skills and appreciate solid craftsmanship and this is an envious display of skill and craftsmanship.. Epic work!!
Gonna watch a lot more of your content!
Congratulations, David Guyton you is amazing
never watched anything like this before, absolutely fascinating, obviously very skilled, and the helmet wow!
I see so much potential here. I made hats as a kid and study knights armour. The padding and leather straps need videos too.
Fantastic and valiant
2015 ???? this helmet is SICK !!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome things man a new sub. you have now
Definitely earned my sub brother thank you for content that isn’t just ANOTHER CHANNEL bashing the president or live streaming fortnight or doing things that are solutions to problems NO one has and calling them “hacks” I wish you the best and hope that you go far in life
Thank you sir I appreciate that greatly!
holy crapppp! I've always like metal working, but this is on another level!!!
nice work , couple of tips use the dog spike in the square hole on your anvil or make square tapered ones of different size domes to drop in, your vice will NOT take the beating aswell as the anvil , also use the flapper wheel to dish out a concave dome shape into your timber stump then dome your flat hammer buy one called a bossing hammer and you WILL cut your plenishing time down , great video nice work ,and yes 34 years panel beating
So many things to make, so little time..Well done!
Great skills mate. Scottish Borders.
that is absolutely awesome well done. you are crazy talented
