What I really liked about the CAR-15 scene at the end was despite that the script doesn't call for Archer to shoot anymore, they had Leo reload his rifle as it would still be something a veteran soldier like Archer would do even if he was going to die. He was going out with a bang. Really nice little touch at the end.
It wasn't even a bullshit reload. They had Leo chamber check to see that he's actually empty, drop mag and even passed the mag to his none shooting hand, then press the release. It was smooth.

@1450, he’s shot in the flank. That bullet probably traveled through the abdominal cavity and bounced off a few things inside. Packing would be useless. It also probably pierced his lower left lobe of his lung causing a collapsed lung. They’d have to put on a chest seal and decompress the lung with a needle decompression. I think that was the injury they were going for in the movie.

5:15 Captain Rambo was a real person in the civil war in either Liberia or Sierra Leone iirc, there was a habit in the area of naming yourself after hollywood stars. I believe Sierra Leone, which of course matches where the movie is set. This is why you also get groups like the "West side boys" in Sierra Leone, it's all related to an adoption almost of American culture.

I also found the Danny Archer character far more interesting than the tired African victim trope of the story. Africans were, and still are the victims of their own fellow Africans. Although the Soloman Bandi character was well cast and played. We judge Rhodesians too harshly I think. Yes many were racists, but I say that they were more realists than racists. I do know that they were tough frontier muther f*ckers, weaned in the bush. Practically alone, they forged a prosperous nation and waged a successful war with limited resources against communist rebels continuously supplied with supplies and weapons. Rhodesia was actually in the process of social change in the war's final years and likely would have continued doing so. Black troops and officers were being integrated into the RLI out of pure necessity. This alone would have dramatically changed the social structure. Forced by their peers to make a truce knowing full well what the outcome would be, (Zimbabwe became, and remains a kleptocratic nightmare) Rhodesians like Eeben Barlow were understandably resentful and turned to their professions as warriors to turn a buck. I see Rhodesia as a very sad chapter in history. A complex story poisoned by the tired modern marxist narrative. The Europeans colonials did their share of pillaging in Africa. But as they leave, China will replace them and Afrifa will continue to be a shit hole, only worse because the Chinese have no affinity to Africa like the Europeans did.

    • @mazambane286
      @mazambane286 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well said. If I recall Barlow was born in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) much the same thing really. But grew up in South Africa. Is probably of South African decent anyway. Afrikaans originally judging by his name.

    RPCV Here,
Spent two years in Ghana, can definitely admit to the adaptation of accent to fit a dialect. The intro scene where Leo is negotiating is accurate. I still love to bust out the adaptations I learned over time when talking about conversing with people. People often bring up this movie, and for good reason, while Leo's SA accent is a little off, talking with an accent will do wonders with people being able to understand you.
It's a lot like the scene in Inglorious Bastards where Brad Pitt speaks Italian in a heavy American accent, it's off putting, and is an immediate give away that you are foreign. (beyond being a white guy wearing shorts that only speaks english) In real life, in my case, the local language was Mampruli, I had a hard time understand locals if they spoke fast and fluent mampruli, if they could dumb it down to my level, I could understand them better. (In my line of work, I was pretty dumb, as understanding the local language is key to integration)
The same goes for english, it is not the mamprusi people's local language, but enough of the locals understand basic english words, so over time, I developed an entirely different way of speaking english. Some call it an accent, but really it's grammatically different all together. A mix of mampruli and english, grammatically changed.
Example: I am going to the onion farms and mapping the agricultural landscape for a fence line so the cows don't get in.
Translation: Me, I am going to alibasa puu (onion farms), I draw them to find borders for fence. Kani Biiyariga Naffu (no more stubborn cows)

A bit of background on African rebels choosing their nom de guerres, they would often choose something they saw as scary or deadly. So in the Liberian Civil War for example, there were warlords who went by General Mosquito and General Bin Laden. Great movie though, still one of my all time favorites. I'll never forget they day my grandfather asked me to find out what's going on in Rhodesia and this was 2000 when he asked me. I go look it up and I'm like wait did you mean Zimbabwe and he looks me dead in the eyes and says Zimbabwe isn't Rhodesia. So I didn't correct him after that

    Fun fact:
Apparently Djimon Hounsou is an absolute unit and when he was running up the hill with Dicaprio over his shoulder, he was just powering up the hill and the director had to tell him to act like it was at least a little difficult, maybe in order to add a little more drama to the scene?
I just think it's funny when an actor turns out to be too badass for the scene the director had in mind, and has to be "nerfed" 😂

Archer's Rhodesian accent made a really big impression on me as a little kid, so it's great to see you covering the film!
The clarity of the audio coming from the film clips compared to your commentary was a little distracting to me; I noticed on your gear list, it seems that you're using a Rode shotgun mic, so perhaps you have it mounted on top of your camera.
As a suggestion, have you considered using a lavalier/lapel microphone instead of the shotgun? The shotgun is picking up a lot of the reverberation from the undisclosed room that you're recording it, so it hurts the clarity of your voice. A lavalier closer to you could potentially give you greater clarity by picking up less of the room echo compared to your voice, and thus make it easier to listen.
Aside from that, your A7's video quality is on point.
Cheers man, TIA~ (This is... America)

The other night, I had a "netflix 'n chill" encounter. She let me pick the movie, so I went with Blood Diamond. Bro, she didn't even mind when I rewound the best scenes, so I could pontificate about all the nuances of how high quality this movie is. And then we lived in sin for like, the next six hours. Obviously it's a trap, but it's a damn good one, because I'll never try to escape it.

Despite all the horrific bloodshed and what not, Blood Diamond is low key the best date night movie ever. The chemistry between Leo and Jennifer is palpable. And the penultimate scene when a dying Leo calls her... That scene could make the whole Sahara wet.

I’ve always been fascinated with Southern Africa. Specifically, whites in Southern Africa. Any time there’s a movie about it I’m in. You should go full retro and review a game for vultures.
