Excellent video! Finally someone who shows the whole process and explains things properly. For all beginners: it’s worth mentioning that loads of plants can be propagated this way, not just geraniums… Really, anything with stems and leaf nodes, you can give a try and see what happens!
Yess 👍; I agree, I have done the same thing with my Dahlia plants ; propagated quite a few of them ; so I don’t have to spend Money buying Tubers next Spring 😀😀!!!
Thanks for your informative and visually instructive offering! Lovely! I remember my mom being inconsolable over not, even, being able to grow a geranium. I grow them for her. But, I live in a Mediterranean climate; no snow. I just put a brilliant red, geranium hedge on either side of the drive at the gate. The original plant was from a cutting 2 years ago. It was a planned grow for the hedge. If left alone, they'll grow tall and gangly, but trimmed way back, over and over, the line of them likes to be about 4' high and 2' 1/2 wide. Here, they root because there's water! We stick them in the ground, and Mom smiles in my heart. Wherever you live, geraniums will make you happy!
That sounds amazing having a hedge made of geraniums. I remember seeing some quite large ones in Spain. I also feel sentimental about them they remind me of my great nan. And the smell of the stems reminds me of being a kid. 🙂
My grandpa showed me how to do this over 80 years ago. I'm just going to take a few now, from a favourite plant. It's the easiest gardening job that does give results.
Thank you! Loved that you learnt this from your nan and great nan. I watched this because I just snapped the geranium that was my mum's, which she'd kept from my nan, 25 years ago... this will help me keep the process going 😊🌱
Well my brother, this blessed my socks off. Last year I grew some geraniums and tried to do cuttings in dirt. But now that you have schooled me, this year is going to be a lot different Praise God. Thank you and have a blessed day my brother.
Thank you for the wonderful tips. I love geraniums in my garden. I always wait when they go on sale late summer and buy a lot. Living in Canada, I tried wrapping in newspapers and leaving in the garage for winter. Every year always disappointed, 100% of them died. Last fall chose big plants, put in a pot and leave in my sun room all winter. They all survived and planted outside this summer. This year will try cuttings of my favourite colour. Wish me luck.
Geraniums are from Africa area so won't survive in harsh winter's. Pelargoniums are what Phill is talking about which are winter hardy ( not same plant )
I tried this after several failed attempts at planting cuttings directly into pots and it worked! What's great about it is you know you're not wasting your time and effort because you can see the root growth already, before you pot it 😊
Thank you soooo much for showing me how to use cuttings. I have several huge plants that are doing great and wanted to spread them out into other pots. Good stuff. :-)
I have used this method, and I want to mention it really makes a big difference if you try this late in the year! I did one starting in September, and it took ages to get the roots going!
Good point I agree with that if you are using water. If you use grit then it can work just as well going into the colder months indoors. I made a video about it: th-cam.com/video/MRBAB4-dG6M/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely fabulous! Every one of them rooted and grew just great. It did take longer to root in the initial stages in the windows even though we tried different exposures but once one root appeared it went very fast. We are doing it in every window now and hoping to get them established before winter hits. You have brought us a LOT of happiness with this video. Thank you so much. The instructions were crystal clear. Big hugs from all of us on the farm 👍.
How long did it take to root? I've had mine in water for 2+ weeks and I see nothing. Should I give a while longer, Lorayne? New leaves are coming on and one is even budding. I see no roots.
@@keith536 The same happened with us...leaves and even a bud and no roots. Ours came in about 4 weeks and we took the buds away as soon as we saw them. Lycka till! (good luck in Swedish)

thank you for a very educational video. Your careful staging on 'How To grow a geranium from a cutting' is done very well and answers any and all question I have on HOW TO GROW FROM CUTTINGS. I am looking forward to trying my hand a propagating some of the beautiful geraniums from my garden this year. Blessing to you and thank you again for sharing your skills.
I bought my first Geraniums this year and they look beautiful. Thank you for this video, it is very easy to follow and I will try to grow a new Geranium with this :)

@clownfern I overwinter all my various varieties of geraniums in my garage. I just bring the whole container in. I spray them really well with neem oil when I bring in so I am not spreading any pests to the other annuals that I also bring in. I water every 3 weeks just to keep soil moist not soggy as you don’t want them to rot. I also pull off all the lower leaves as I found that helps. They will start to look sick in the winter and this is normal as they are tired from producing flowers all spring and summer. I keep my garage at 50 degrees and use grow lights on timers. I snip off any flowers or buds coming up and watch for pests. If you see any spray with neem right away. By taking off the buds and flowers through the winter you will get nice thick stems vs small spindly ones. Check the stems regularly when you water…if they feel soft and not firm cut that stem out. I also keep a fan going for air circulation. I know some people bring them indoors but I don’t as I have to many houseplants that I don’t want to take a chance of bringing in some pest. You can also overwinter other annuals like impatiens, diamond euphorbia, mountain euphorbia, coleus, penny vines, ect. These are shade loving annuals so I keep those under a table or my citronella & elephant ears I keep in a darker corner in the garage. Just keep in mind your sun or shade lovers as you wouldn’t want a shade/partial shade plant directly under your grow lights because it would get fried. Hope this helps save you some money from repurchasing the plants you love. Also all of these can be propagated!
Here in New Zealand we take the cutting, leave it out in the air for 24 hours and pop it straight into the soil and ramp in firmly. I water it the next day with fish/seaweed solution. Depending on weather I might provide it with a cloche made from the top end of a large plastic bottle. I can't remember a time when this technique failed to produce a new plant. But here in NZ everything grows all year round.
Thank you so much for this! I was thinking of redoing my balcony with geraniums and was researching the plant care, so this is extremely helpful, especially since it’s saving money! I hope it goes well and I do this right!

We are hoping it works. Thanks for the video, very easy to follow, and wish us "lycka till" (good luck in Swedish) with our geranium propagating.
I decided this year not to take my geraniums inside to save over the winter and to take cuttings instead. Some of my plants are several years old and it’s a hassle getting them in the house without bringing in a lot of bugs. I’ve got about ten cutting in water and I know I’ll get some really nice plants from them. Great video.

I live in New Zealand. We have very mild winters. I take cuttings all year round. I leave the cutting lying out in the soil for 24 hours so the cut stem dries out. Then I put the cutting in the soil and it grows. Easy as that. Sometimes I cloche them in the winter by using a clear plastic bottle cut in half, with the bottle top removed.

My Mom could pick something….stick it in dirt….and it would thrive and grow. I recently propagated a top stem of leaves on a succulent in water. 💦 AND it rooted nicely and now is in a small pot of dirt. Going great!! This is fun! Ahna
Thank you so much for this hon geraniums used to be my mother’s favorite flower before she went to heaven and I have really developed a love for them myself they are so easy to grow and bring so much color and joy clear till frost so it will be nice not to know how to do cuttings from them and hopefully save them through the winter because at four dollars each at our greenhouse I spent a fortune this past summer doing my elderly father‘s yard💚❤️💛🌱🪴🌱🪴
Thank you your welcome. This is great to save money on plants. The cuttings seem to grow even faster than the plant they came off in many cases. Thank you for the positive comment!
Thank you. First time this year I over wintered some geraniums in the house and will now take cuttings to propagate, could save some of my gardening budget by not buying plugs.
Very good root development in just 10 days and in heavy soil too! Geraniums are usually easy to grow and maintain, but I’ve had a hard time with them this year. Too much prolonged heat this summer in Pennsylvania. One of the main problems was they never rooted well in the potting soil in my planters. I think I will mix in some garden soil next year to see if that might help them out.
Thanks Scott I had a similar problem here in the UK this year with a long hot drought. The Geraniums didn't take well to that and didn't do very well this year. Saying that, they are still growing and alive so it's not all bad. Mixing in garden soil can help as it tends to have more density and a better ability to hold water and nutrients in my opinion.
Your welcome. I am just about to add a new video on how to grow them during the winter time from a cutting using grit so you might want to look out for that video. Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this, straightforward and so useful! I lost a lot of pelargoniums by foolishly leaving them to get frostbitten.... at least I had some indoor geraniums that I can propagate from, to renew the lost stock!
Thanks! I also did a video about growing cuttings through the winter if you would like to watch it here is the link: th-cam.com/video/MRBAB4-dG6M/w-d-xo.html
Cool, thanks. I've always wondered how to do this. My mom always loved geraniums and I would love to keep the one from her funeral. My sister's might like a cutting too.

My Mom could pick something….stick it in dirt….and it would thrive and grow. I recently propagated a top stem of leaves on a succulent in water. 💦 AND it rooted nicely and now is in a small pot of dirt. Going great!! This is fun!
Ahna
That is awesome!
He really makes you understand what you need to do for a beautiful plant! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much!
That made it look easy for this novice. Thanks I’ll try
Thanks Tessa good luck with yours 👍🏻
Your welcome 👍🏻 I took a cutting last week. I have it on the window sill fingers crossed it will take root 🤞
Thanks for this very informative video on growing geraniums!!

Cheers Phil, great tips, I’ve over wintered mine now, but I’ll give that a go, I’ve subscribed
Cheers Philip I appreciate the support!
Thank you my grandma and I are gonna try this and so much
That's great!
Thank you so much! Trying it now. Very clear explanation!
Your welcome.
Thank you Phil. This is just what I needed. Good luck with your work 😊
Thank you very much!
I’m definitely going to try this, I’ve had very poor results in the past so I’m looking for a different method. Thanks!
Your welcome. I am just about to add a new video on how to grow them during the winter time from a cutting using grit so you might want to look out for that video. Merry Christmas!
@@PhillWyattProjects Ahh that’s interesting, is this technique not possible over winter? Thanks again.
Thank you, great simple method and well explained!
Thanks your welcome 👍🏻
Short and to the point. Thank you!
Thanks your welcome
Cool, thanks. I've always wondered how to do this. My mom always loved geraniums and I would love to keep the one from her funeral. My sister's might like a cutting too.
Thanks Betty that's a great idea 👍🏻
Super. Very good video. Simple and easy to follow.
Thank you
