Thank you for watching How To Propagate Hydrangeas From Cuttings the Easy Way
Well explained and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm on the verge of propagating my hydrangeas here in Durban, South Africa. Wish me luck as I'm a beginner at age 85. Thank you for your endeavours.
1:25
Great to find you. I'm a beginner at 80. I've been a beginner for 10 years, so the very very best of luck; or green fingers. Mine are still rather brown.
i have been an avid gardener for 45 plus yrs and i just drop my cuttings in a jar of tap water and put them in a warm place. i change the water once a week topping up when needed. have never paid out for all these products which were never available when i began gardening...this of course depends on where you live😀
Oh I love the idea of your short and simple method . I wasn’t successful in doing the water method in the past but I I am going to try it again because of you . Thank you for the encouragement 🌸🌸
@@KellyLehman me too
Same for me Lee Tau, especially with the coleus plant. ( the one with dk pink)
@@KellyLehmanyou're so sweet. Thank you for this info.
Omg your pink golf cart is the cutest!
Thank you 😊
I love your accent , I'm a southern girl from SC , people always tell me how "country" my voice is ! I use to not like it when people said that , but over the years I've gotten over it , I now take it as a compliment lol ! It's fun & refreshing to hear your "northern girl" accent ! You have a beautiful voice as well as a beautiful garden !! 🖤💜💙
I use to? That’s not country, that’s illiterate. You mean “used to”.
So happy I found this. I have found a hydrangea along a trail by a river.
That was incredibly educational! I have hydrangeas and I do need to trim mine to expose the flowers beneath but now know how I can grow even more of these lovely flowers. Thank you!
This is great! The price of certain varieties is incredible! 😏 I just bought some trimmed them up and took clippings and propagated them too. Happy planting all!
You're such a great teacher! I've learned so much from you. Thank you 😊
Love your pink cart 💖💕🌸
This was a terrific video. I am so upset with myself because we moved to a house with zero landscaping. I love gardening but to start from nothing to get to where I was at our last house will be ridiculously expensive! I had a bazillion hydrangeas at the last house and could have at least had a headstart using your method!
Go and knock at that house and say that you missed the plants you have grown and so fond of and if it is okay for you to take some cuttings. What have you got to lose?
I agree , great idea 🌸@@danielleaf9146
I agree with @danielleaf9146 below, I'll bet the new owners will let you take some cuttings . Another thing to consider is that cuttings take a long time to reach a mature size , If you wait until mid to late summer , many nurseries, home depot and lowes usually have great end of season sales and you can get large mature hydrangeas and other great landscaping plants . 🌸🌸 Thank you for you kind comment .
Agree! They root easy! I have rooted with young steams n rooted with just a leaf with a little steam on it. Keep them moist n in a shady area
Most of the flowers in my yard are rooted from cutting and/or seeds I got from family n friends and I go to the sale rack at my local box stores Lowes n Walmart r the main ones. Gardening can be expensive. In September, Labor Day is usually when the stores have soil n mulch on sale n some summer plants as they are bringing in winter plants. Check your local stores. I also use free pine straw for mulch. Azales n rodododendron love pine tree straw as their mulch. Use leaves in your hard also as mulch. Start of slow n things will grow, you will have your beautiful garden again!😊
I was trimming mine back in spring and used one of the sticks as a stake. Just stuck it in the ground and it grew. I did nothing 😂
Isn't that great? I got 4 tomato plants like that 😂
I also got a whole section of Tiger Lillies I had nothing to do with. I call it my God section, because that's who planted them 😂
I’ve started all my hydrangeas by pulling off suckers 4-5 and sticking in ground.
Wow...did you both use regular potting soil?
Thanks....lm looking forward to see how l do...
OMG, this video was so helpful. I cannot tell you how much I realized that I have wasted countless annuals by not knowing how to propagate. It is so helpful to know this information. I followed your instruction and now have about 15 successful propagations that have super-root growths going on. I propagated some coleus plants as well, and they have done exceptionally well. I'm using those for my new fall container gardening arrangements. I don't have to spend a small fortune on buying the young versions all over again. I plan to now do more bins since I've had such success. I'm so excited and I really appreciate this very helpful video. ***** on cost savings.
No I can’t at the moment, I am busy getting some things done before I Go away..

I've grown so many babies from the first hydrangea I bought. Just planted 6 babies that have been growing since last year. I'm going to start somemore babies tomorrow. It makes me smile to see all my new babies. I also do cuttings from my gardenias and grow more babies.
Ahhh love that . So much hydrangea fun from these mama plants . Thanks for sharing the tips about propagating gardenias . I need to try that . 🌸

Which 3 different sides are better rooted?
I pulled a poorly plant from the bin at the garden centre where I work i planted it at home it was a lovely free gift, I get stuff most days they Chuck stuff if it’s wilted 🥀
Myra, You are a super smart and savy gardener 👍👏🤗🌸
Thanks for teaching how to propagate plants
You're very welcome , I'm glad it was helpful 🌸👍
We enjoyed the video very much!!!
Yes, my friends and I would like to see your part2 video after they are all rooted, bc mine rooted ones all died after transplanting to the soil.
Please let us know what to pay attention such as what type of soil you use to transfer them to, the light, how often to water them, whether I should fertilize the rooted little plants bc they seems not growing after transplanting, and how often to fertilize them, etc.
Thank you very much!!!
Hi Kelly! Thank you for the great video! I have propagated many hydrangeas and love doing that. I have a lot of hydrangeas because of that too! Great way to have more. Thank you again Kelly! 🌹🌺✨

Thanks a lot 🙏🏾 I stumbled upon a vacant lot with these beauties in it. I knew they could be propagated
Thanks to you I know I did right. ❤
Thank you so much for your lesson, I have a neighbour that has a yellow hydrangea bush and I’m going to try propagating some of the branches the way you have taught on this video. xxx
Very informative video.
I just love the way u explain step by step which make super easy to understand and answer a lot of questions in mind. Keep up the good job.

Thanks, I have 2 here at my new house, but I like 50, so this was very educational for me!
Hi Delia , I’m with you . You can never have too many hydrangeas 🌻🌻👍
Thank you for everything, your easy to watch and very descriptive
Hey Kelly, great video! Do you have a part 2 to this? I have cuttings with roots and would like to know what you do next as far as potting and the type of soil you prefer to transplant them in.
You put them in the ground. How could you not know that?

So glad to have found this page! We bought a new home and I’m looking forward to creating a beautiful garden. I love hydrangeas! And love that you’re from NJ ♥️
Merci, Kelly! Brilliant...
Thank you for the care tips for hydrangeas. Every year I do some pruning to my hydrangeas and they grow nice flowers. How can I get additional colours coming, do you play with the acidity of the soil that surrounds your plant. Thanks again and you’re a good looking and well spoken woman. I’m in British Columbia, Canada, within an hour and half from Seattle, Washington.
Thanks!
Thank you so much . So very kind of you 🌸❤️

Great instructions, I have my cuttings now "rooting" according to your instructions. Now my question is: When the cuttings grow roots, what do I do next? Plant in small container of soil? Or ???. Thanks I love your videos. Lilli
she mentioned in video what to do next
thank you, clear and informative,I'm new to this but I can what you did, lol.
Hi Kelly, you've got some raging fungal things going on with that bush ( the dark brown spots on leaves) Not being critical, just saying incase you never noticed. Love your vid and thanks for sharing. I like the chunky root balls you get with your cuttings. Cheers from an Aussie chick.

You’re super thorough! Terrific video! Your plants are bomb beautiful! 💝
Thank you for your incredibly kind comment flower friend 🌿🌼❤️😊
Kelly - have you ever used coco coir? I find it even better than either perlite or vermiculite. It has great water retention property & it naturally contains potassium which is aids in root development in plants. Terrific video. Thanks much.
I have never tried this but now I’m super curious . I’ll try it out soon. Thanks for letting us know about it !
You should write a book. I have learned so much from you. I just binged your videos.
Great video! Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for your kind comment 🌸🤗
Thank you so much you are the only person that I have seen propagating a hydrangea 😃, I have been trying to grow one for a few years and it kept dying on me , this time I planted one again and I am giving it a little more TLC and it is actually growing taller has new leaves 🎊 so happy I shade it every day in the summer and it is helping , my husband thought that it was to much work but he sees it now! he’s happy I’m doing that. Anyway just want to express my thanks for your video it really helps I’m trying to find the link you spoke about can’t find it . thanks again Doris ove your beautiful plants and flowers
Love, love this channel. Question, has anyone tried this on boxwoods? I can't wait to try this on my hydrangeas! Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for your kind comment . I have not tried this on boxwoods . 🌺
Once you put them into the Perlite and put them in a shaded spot, how often do you add water to the Perlite? Do you keep it moist all of the time? Do you put the lid on tight or do you allow some air to circulate? First time doing this so want to be successful.
Thanks for all your sharing, I learned a lot. Im still learning, have lots of hydrangea from cuttings and now blooming lots pf flowers, still Spring here in South Australia , Summer is coming, God Bless you..... always following you, love you, take care
God bless you for sharing this! I'm a huge fan!❤❤❤
Hi Kelly, Same as Mr Tseed here. Looking for the next step once roots are established. Fourth attempt for me to try and propagate from my mum's probably Niko type?? Bloody massive heads, gorgeous. She passed away, a fabulous witty 97 yr old, last year when of course we couldn't be with her due to covid. With your help, this is the furthest I've gotten and am fairly desperate for it to work this time! Thank you much ☘
Hey there Jo , God bless your mum . Sounds like she lead a full life at passing at 97 ❤️ . So the nexts steps I would take would be to transplant them
Into larger pots once they start growing a bit . I would put a mixture of potting soil and garden soil in the pots and baby them a bit more . Then I would keep half the plants in the pots to overwinter in a protected area like a garage or garden shed that gets sunlight and them plant them in spring after there is no more threat in of frost and the other half I would plant directly into the garden this fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes so the roots can get established. Make sure they don’t get too much wind of excessive exposure to rough elements of nature where you plant them since they are still tender plants . An area that is semi protected by other shrubs to block the wind yet still allow lots of sunlight in would be ideal . Make sure to plant in well drained soil too . Good luck 🌸❤️
@@KellyLehman Thank you Kelly. Before I got your reply, I transplanted the cuttings into pots with potting soil, they looked really good and healthy., even sprouted some new growth. About a week later, they got a bit "fungussy", stems turning brown, some of the leaves rotted etc, the same thing happened last time. I worried that the soil was too rich, so discarded it for a sterile mix?? Some of the cuttings root system had diminished, some gone completely. I did some fresh cuts and applied rooting agent to those. Had at least half a dozen still good looking but now they are just bare stems. 😩Thought I'd just leave them in the pots and hope for a miracle in Spring! Thanks again for your help and info.
I love this hydrangeas tutorial! Thank you
I used philadelphus a cutting for a stake. The cutting was made 4 years earlier. Next thing I see it's sprouted. Now it's a lovely bush.
Very very informative video........ I learned something new today!!!!!!! Thank-you!!!!!
Hi Michael 👋 I'm so glad to hear that you learned something new today 👍 Wishing you all the best 🌸🌸🌸
Those are the most beautiful hydrangeas I've ever seen!!. My goals truly.
Great help - I have stuck 12" branches into potting soil and next year they have rooted - but I like your better. One question - can I bring the covered tray indoors for the winter for the rooting process?
beautiful hydrangeas
Thank you flower friend 🌸🌸🌸
Great info. We never prune our blue hydrangeas and do prune lime lights and Annabelle. Do prune out dead limbs in april/may... we have very full plants. Durham nc
I love the details!
Cant wait to try this tomorrow
Great video, thanks for sharing your tips! Can't wait to give this a try!
I'm wishing you all the best when you try this out Tracey 👍 So glad you enjoyed the video 🌸
Ok stop. You have a pink golf cart??! And your dog is so cute.
I have 10 hydrangeas propagating (started with 24, oh well) and just moved them out of the bin to outdoors. I’ll be planting them in my garden tomorrow. Should I cover them over the winter to ensure they survive our Jersey weather, or just leave them?
Ty so much for teaching me how to do this. ❤️ your videos!
Great video, I’m in the UK in Cornwall and have been wondering how to get cuttings from my beautiful hydrangea, I shall definitely give this method a try.
Awesome to know how to make new Hydrangea, as I list my lace leaf to freezing weather. It is June here and it feels like April 55 to 60 degrees.
Lovely dog.
Great video!
Also I have a hydrangea it was at a home we purchased 10 years ago. It was blooming beautiful. The next 8 years nothing. I checked the soil all was good. It was beautiful green plant each summer. The last 2 years has only one bloom on the plant. I contacted a master gardener and they were stumped . I have used hydrangeas fertilizer as per directions etc. Any suggestions on getting it to bloom? Thanks in advance.
I just now found your channel. Thank you so much for the great information. I'm going to try this.🥰
Hey Judy, welcome to our Flower Tribe. So happy you found us 🌸👏👍😊
Wow! Finally it worked! Thank you! The roots would rotten before in soil, as your mention.
Thank You Kelly
You're welcome flower friend 👍
I’ve done this and it’s worked incredibly well thank you! I’ve rooted lots of cuttings now and potted them up into their own pots. How long does it take for them to grow into a larger plant that flowers now?
I've only done paniculatas, this was a wonderful video ty
Thank you for your kind comment flower friend 😊🌸
Glad I ground you, Trina from Australia🇦🇺🦘
MANY, MANY THANKS! WONDERFUL INFORMATION.
Wonderful Video ❤
Thank you for your wonderful comment 🌸🌻
Beautiful, thank you. Do you have a video on how & when mass Hydrangea gardeners trim flowers to sell at stores? Was always curious how huge & beautiful the garden must be to produce stems and stems of flowers to provide for bouquets. 😊
My Virginia Beach garden had 25+ varieties of Hydrangeas - a climbing reached into the canopy of a 100' Poplar.
The easiest way to propagate is to properly prune in the Spring, by cutting above the 2 buds, from just above the
ground up the branch where ever the plant needs 'forming'. and sticking the trimming into the soil around the Mother plant.
The following Spring you'll see well-rooted plants that can be set about the garden, or potted as gifts.
If cuttings are taken late-Summer into Fall you'll be cutting off next year's blooms.
Thank you so much now I know why my cuttings are not flowering in summer
Iv been taking cuttings in October not in June.
Wow there are 25 varieties and so those seeds they sell online those are real? Are those planted by seeds also perennials?
Love your hat
Oh.. my.. god... I had to watch a few times to learn about how to do the actual cuttings because you are drop dead gorgeous! Great info, and thanks!
Great info - I live in zone 3 in Canada and was wondering when I need to plant to make sure they overwinter
I am here to watch new tips on propagating and instead I am stuck on 4 inches and early morning is best. Ok now back to gardening. As I need about 30 for a client.
Hi Kelly,
This is a beautiful tutorial! Thank you.
Hi Isabel 👋 Thank you for your kind comment 😊 I'm glad the "How to Propagate Hydrangeas from Cuttings" video was helpful 👍
Excellent video, thanks for sharing these tips. I will try vermiculite and perlite next time. Is there any advantage to mixing together the perlite and vermiculite or is it better to keep them separate?
I found that very interesting very good thank God big garden so I can’t do what you’ve just done. I have got one and it’s with pink and I’ve added some comp possible what turns it purple and it did work but but in the end I got pink and purple so there wasn’t enough soil there to change the colour completely. I’ve got one big one in my garden in the back no room anymore but I love these. Thank you very much, good program. I enjoyed watching that very interested. It just know what to get now to do it. Would you get the knack of you away? Aren’t you? Thank you.
You're lucky to have so much sunshine! We have so many shade trees on our property that growing flowers or veggies is really challenging.
Love this idea! Cant wait to try this! TY!
Thank you for the video. Just double checking, did your clear plastic lid have holes or just the bottom for drainage? Thanks
