Thank you, quite helpful. In order to extend battery life, Apple suggests removing the case when charging because otherwise the phone gets too hot. This seems a bit risky to do on a daily basis. I'm going to just remove the rubber outer-shell, and leave the inner plastic intact.

Be very careful taking off hard plastic once rubber back case is removed. Severed the thinner top piece by carelessly prying apart near where the volume control is located. On the upside once reassembled it appears it very well may be inconsequential.
