Christopher Sheldrake's Ambre Sultan is a feat of fragrance architecture. I admire how elements come together to create column-like strength and support, effigies and vaults for shape and ornamentation. Everything is in perfect balance and proportions seem to follow a godly inspiration. The scent allures, embraces and soothes, creating a sense of richness and reverence.

    Great review as usual. 😁
Many of Serge Lutens’ perfumes are like a spiritual experience. They’re so exquisite.

Thank you, Sebastian. Aren’t they? And the fact that i don’t feel ripped off sure is great.

You spoke so beautifully about this fragrance and in an extraordinary way about your intimate relationship with the sensual 'Ambre Sultan'. >>>> This is great to hear.

I’m a fairly recent subscriber and have been enjoying your intelligent and sensitive reviews. Long may you prosper. Ahh, Lutens. I own many SLs and while I admire Ambre sultan immensely, I always depart from the experience wishing it would do more, give me more, and for longer. But, ahh, if you know the frags of SL, especially in their original formulations if you are fortunate, you will be familiar with this experience. They so often position us in that liminal point between desire and ultimate fulfilment, as though by design. The opening of Ambre sultan (Palais Royale bottle; yours is the present-day Collection Noire bottling, which I have not sampled; most older SLs have been reform’d as long ago as 2012-13-ish-that said, I’m thrilled to learn that you love yours) is a wonderful melange of shapes (I find this to be a ‘spatial’ perfume), both round and sharp edged-I fully agree with you that it is an airy perfume. I, too, sense something aromatic and green in the opening but more present and sustaining is the booze-tinged honeyed, slightly vanillic labdanum, and, again concurring with you, a dusty or powdery facet that is just right, and thankfully doesn’t veer in to the musky, overly-honeyed mess that is the current version of Chergui. 😢 But overall Ambre sultan is a fleeting affair (at least on my skin). To be certain, one does not go to Lutens for bombast. Ambre sultan is a superbly comforting close companion as a skin scent but from such wonderful beginnings I’m usually left slightly bereft, alas. Still, I treasure it. There have been several amazing ambers-and many more forgettable ones-from other houses since Ambre sultan (1993!) though in my view it is still one of the most special.

Thank you so much for this detailed review, it was awesome to read. You know, in this current trend of fast consuming fragrances of which even myself and sometimes especially myself am guilty when buying so many things i get excited over then quickly pass over to search for the next one, for the last 2 months going on three now i’ve been going back to Ambre Sultan, and am doing this more often while going to bed. It’s one of the most soothing well-rounded fragrances i’ve owned and still cannot get enough of its comforting touch. Today I ordered Chergui, i’ve only known this formulation and as I mentioned, not having smelled the vintage ones, i think i am blessedly innocent in being able to really enjoy them to their fullest. I can’t wait to own Chergui. Is it fleeting? Well, yes and no. Ambre Sultan lasts well on my skin, well more than Chergui does but even so, i still think it’s worth the attention. I am sick and tired of long lasting, attention seeking and obnoxious scents. I’ll take Serge Lutens’ whispers over any other brand’s howls any day of the week. ♥️

@@MemoryFloOh, you’re quite welcome. Indeed, the enjoyment of perfume would be much diminished if we had in our midst only fragrances with near-relentless duration. I, too, will take a well-executed ‘affair’ over a going-nowhere long term entanglement. Per Ambre sultan, specifically, I am so enthralled, so intoxicated by its opening minutes on my skin that what ensues thereafter-as quietly glorious in its own right as it is-rests in its shadow for me, let us say? But to say that is not to diminish it very severely. I do get hours of enjoyment from it, still, having owned it for several years. I hope I haven’t biased you in any way in your imminent attainment and impressions of Chergui! (I am sure not.) It is true, reform talk can sometimes get very boring and needlessly prejudicial, especially in cases where older versions are unattainable for comparison purposes. It is usually best to deal with what is front of us, free from thoughts of ‘what was’. I look forward to your ongoing musings, on Chergui and otherwise.👏🏻
