Modern one is still nice, though wish I had an original formulation. Oh well, one day....
On the perfumer's skill topic, my biased observation is that the best indie perfumers out there are the ones that have some kind of background in chemistry. So I suppose understanding the modern synthetics is a lot more important than having access to those incredibly precious and scarce naturals. Those last precious drops of my-inter-sollar sandalwood that's been harvested from the first sandalwood tree that has even appeared on earth and it's been stored in the arses of holly donkeys protected by celibate monks and been taken out of the storage on the sunrise by the delicate women's fingers because only women's fingers can do such delicate job. For such honorary duty women must've been paid by wheat.

Well and there was me thinking I'm heading towards a sandalwood kick and you pull out this one, lovely lovely review. Truly a great amongst sandalwoods for me, I love this one above the other Serge sandalwoods. Your note breakdowns create visions that I relate to, your opineing is warranted on fragrances like this, you failed to mention part of your process that bears heavily on your satisfaction which affects your subsequent review...two hydrations or less and it's going to be a good one, 3 and above and the expletive count as well as the volume increases twofold at least.😂

Never smelled a Serge.. we dont have them here in stores..but the guy i buy decants from have some of them.. Nice review i'll ask for samples with my next purchase.. So many perfumes to smell can't keep up 🙃.. All in it's time.. Cheers Ritch

I love a bit of Serge I’ve not got my nose on this one tho, it sounds right up my straße. I’ll have to get a decant, i love watching ur reviews but they always cost me money.

Though I now prefer the darker, more brooding, Santal de Mysore by a few hairs, SM was my first (instant) Serge sandalwood champion (sniffed at Liberty in London many years ago-and soon after purchased) and I shall always treasure it. Nice review. Interestingly, I get an a facet from Gucci Guilty Absolute in the drydown of that fragrance that I could swear is a component in SM. Try a side by side wearing of each one day and see if you pick it up.
It could be that sourness/balsamic vibe I mentioned. Gga has zero sweetness in it, though.
Santal de mysore is more deep character, older brother real show up off spices opening to deep sandalwood. Honestly Santal Majuscule is just nice, funny and charming. Santal de mysore almost a reference in wood game
Great review Duck. I bought it a while ago and I still don't know how I feel about it. On my skin it turns extremely feminine to the point that I feel a bit self-conscious , but others have said it leans very masculine. Sometimes I get a lot of sandalwood sometimes I get none. It's a hard one to decipher.

Hey Mitch! Been looking at getting my first Sandalwood fragrance. Have been considering Trumper’s Sandalwood as it has been recommended by the boys over on Wafts from the Loft. Which do you think might be a better fit for a first time Sandalwood?
P.S. I would be buying the Serge Lutens from a discounter so not full price.
Trumpet for a first time sandalwood is a good choice. Also sandalo from Villorsesi for a more woody sandalwood, santal massoia by Hermes is accessible but also expensive

@@RichMitchJust noticed the Pachuli Kozha in the back there. Have you talked at length about that one yet? I’m very curious if it has the same amberwood drydown that bugs me about most of Nishane’s perfumes.
