- 🤯 How did Disney do that?
As we see more and more from the new Fantasy Springs land at Tokyo DisneySea, things just keep getting more mind blowing. But the effect that has everyone talking is Anna unfreezing in the Frozen ride.
Sure, an animatronic can look perfectly still, but what about the fabric cape? How did Imagineering pull this off?
This video has my best guess, based on watching this clip about 1,000 times at super slow motion. I think Disney came up with something extremely clever. It’s both brilliantly simple in concept and probably insanely complex in execution.
What do you think? Any guesses to how the cape effect works on Disney’s new Frozen ride?

These animatronic figures are so super realistic!
They’re truly next level.
They're better animated and less robotic than the actual film😂
I legitimately thought it was a video game at first glance. Tech has come a long way!
I agree! The level of face expressions are really impressive!!
RIGHT? Like why is everyone talkin about the cape
Look at the dang animatronics,
I refuse to believe that isnt a person inside them
I personally think all future Disney character rides should be made like this, they’re already making tiana’s bayou similar.
Based on the new ride video for Tiana’s bayou, evidently not…
Tiana's...is definitely not like this....they move smooth, but very awkwardly.
I wouldnt say that refusing to apologize for it's actions in WWII is smart @makayla5227
This didn’t age well… 😂😂😂 Tiana is horrible
haven't seen anything about Tina's bayou, but I _can_ say I far prefer this over any screen-heavy ride. as someone that doesn't really care too much for Disney, but has a massive interest in practical effects and animatronics, the movements of these animatronics are incredible, and I hope Disney takes note on the hype around them
It's amazing what the Imagineers can do when they are given proper budget
Oriental Land Company to the rescue once again

And TIME, dont forget the time.
These new animatronics looks like the animated characters actually just stepped out of the movies
All they need is an AI that can simulate the personnality of the character :)
Honestly, at first I thought it was some stop motion short based off Frozen. 😂
Those ARE ANIMATRONICS??? They look so frikin cool! I want to hug that Elsa so bad!
I don’t… have you learned nothing from the FNAF games/movie?
@@DrewStewart-xt5sjI was about to say girls about to get fnaf-ed
@@DrewStewart-xt5sj FNAF Animatronics got possesed, or were made to Kill (Like Circus Baby) Elsa doesnt necessarily was made to kill :c
@@LaSirenaQueLlora well…
@@LaSirenaQueLlorayea… that was because of the children, and if these animatronics malfunction, they can’t kill you, much less injure you at all.
I work for disney.
The answer is that we just actually freeze and unfreeze the actor. We use the same tech that was used to keep walts head frozen.
I thought you were serious for a sec and was like "you sure? 🤨" Then I reread it and realized
@@TheRedGhost_ wdym, they are obviously being serious.
@@JustAnotherEmoNerd actually yeah they're being 100% serious
Walt Disney's cremated body gets reformed into a perfect replica of his head just to be frozen?
Yeah, it's weird, I know.
The Cape looks like a wing so that is probably what they are using to animate it in terms of structure, how a wing folds out and the membrane expands out.
Exactly!
Just like Batman

This looks like CGI. I cannot believe it’s animatronics. Also, it looks like there is a rod at the top with very small rods below based on the wrinkling at the top in even intervals. So, its rods with malleability with a projector on the characters. That’s incredible.
I believe they do use a CGI software to input movements into the animatronics
@@narc692they meant that they thought these animations were animations, not that cgi wasn’t used at all (also i don’t think you’re using cgi right here 😅)
They look so smooth and fluid, I like their “roundness” in design especially life size.
As someone who’s worked in fibers it’s probably not multiple rods:
There’s definetly a rod on the top which swings up and down- however it’s probably more of a hook shape or loop… it is a thin metal wire in the seam line to allow the bottom of the cape to be taught. To me it’s similar to a pack and fold round light diffusing form.
Those tend to be white circles for expressly photography allowing to diffuse a harsh light and let it be moveable and hand held creating a soft light effect. The hard light shines ontop of the form and the fabric diffuses the light so there is no glare on the subject matter often used with either camera stage lights or natural sunlight.
You can take the round shape and figure 8 it and collapse it into a smaller circle to then pack up.
It opens with a pop and keeps its large round shape. They tend to have some of those lines that you pointed to which are simply soft fold lines of fabric but enough tension to keep the form round.
I feel they have the rod on top and simply some wire in the hem line that when the top rod is elevated pops the form to look taught and when the rod goes down causes the fabric to buckle.
I think the projector facing this fabric also has some texture to add to the imagery that the fabric when frozen has fold lines/dark contrast. But over all it doesn’t look like multiple rods the movement of the fabric remains too fluid and the fold lines are indicative of tension lessening
Pretty extraordinary…the artistry of these characters are wonderfully produced
I more amazed of the feelings of their faces... 1st Elsa was worried and then she has a shape of relief in her face :0
Fuck the cape, the animatronics themselves are terrifyingly smooth! What in the hell kind of witchcraft does Disney have with these things
I am of the same opinion as to the mechanics of the cape. Someone else mentioned a curtain. Overall it is rather simple and should be pretty reliable. The entire illusion is fantastic.
These animatronics are gorgeous oh my goodness
My favorite scene is the Wanna Build a Snowman scene. It is so simple and powerful.
Holy fuck man, sometimes I can't even tell it's not animted, it's so smooth!
I remember everyone raving about the realistic moving animatronic for Na’vi River Journey, only to be disappointed when it would be a screen instead because of the complex machine needing to be repaired frequently. These kinds of animatronics are so cool but, from the looks of it, require constant upkeep (worth it though, in my opinion).
I seriously hope they paid these people well for building these rides, because they are so cool and a good idea for Disney's future.
Giving Japan's work culture reputation, they are most likely we'll paid but severely overworked 🫣
Think of a theatre curtain. That's how her cloak works.
These animatronics are so beautiful!! They're so perfect, like the characters popped out of the movies to real life 🤩🤩🤩 Wonderful work
These are the most movie-accurate animatronics I've ever seen, this is actually amazing
It's insane how they did that!
Probably some the brst animatronics work from them in a long time. Made my jaw drop just like beasts transformation on the beauty and the beast ride
Woah this looks way better than the one I rode in Disney world
I think toure right about the multi rods, but given the shadows when the light shines on it, i think the structure inside is shaped more like a bat wing, with the ends folding up behind her back when the cape drops.
I think its a single wire that goes out to stretch the fabric to its shape, then retracts to 'unfreeze' it. Its probably near the top of the shawl near the shoulder and goes to the back of the lower legs probably.
Edit: it would have to be in the edge seam for the effect to work.
You can see that the cape goes down before it bends inwards- I think you are right with your hypothesis:)
We surviving 5 nights with this one🗣️🔥🔥
Five Nights at Elsa's
i don’t know how they manage to make animatronics like this without getting uncanny it’s seriously incredible
I think fishing wire for reliability. Considering that you’re seated on a ride, they can very likely hide fishing wire at an angle. They can pull it taut and quickly give it slack.
You’d be surprised how much bulk a bone could put into fabric.
What Im more fascinated by is how smooth the animatronics move.😳
Thats exactly how its done. Its the visual effects the projections give the cape that throws you off. This trick actually isnt anything new. Its used more than what you think.
i LOVE the new animatronics bro
there so COOL :D
I literally thought it was an animation, I did not realise this was a physical real life object omg
This makes me enjoy Frozen so much more.
The animatronics are so smooth, my first thought was cast cast members in advanced helmets. Truly amazing engineering.
Honestly i can imagine a combination of both your theory and the string theory for the cape. Like when the cape comes up via the strings, to make it into that specific shape, then the rods begin to expand to give it shape, then the string descends, causing the rods inside to unalign and return the cape to it unfrozen self.
These animatronics are insanely realistic tho :0
You can see the lines of curved rods in the Cape if you look close while it’s fully extended. The lighting is a little different around them, and if you look you can see that they’re the same curves with consistent spacing.
The animatronics move so realistically and look so realistic
I love the way the animatronic Anna bounces as she's finished melting. It looks so realistic and life like
These animatronics are MIND BLOWINGLY good!
I figured it was something like you’re suggesting (a set of flexible rods). You see similar tricks/mechanisms in some of the more advanced cosplays/costuming that have gimmicks to them.
This is cool but the Beast transformation effect on the Beauty and the Beast ride was seriously like watching real life magic and I have no idea how they did it
I made another video about that effect! th-cam.com/users/shortszIqaQ2TZKHY?si=pBMEmgIQ7uHEE09_
Disney has been so disappointing of late that i am genuinely stunned they still have some magically creative tricks up their sleeves. Glad to see animatronic technology still being appreciated and experimented with
I wish they had more animations that are like this but in the park so you can interact with it like tlak to it
No face projections! Actual animatronics! Nice!
The fact Disney made the animatronics so realistic I thought it was a movie lol
Man these animatronics are very high tech they look like they are the actual characters that jumped from the movie
Wow those animatronics look shockingly real, I thought they were people at first
I'm shocked that they're animatronics, I thought it was a game. It's so realistic with smooth movements, unbelievably fantastic
"What do you mean Doc? All the best stuff's made in Japan." - Marty McFly
I think it’s Magic
I love this! So cool! I can't wait to see more animatronics built like this!
Disney has been the leading pioneer in animatronic technology for decades
Why do the look real though. These are probably some of the best animatronics I've seen Disney do.
They all have such a stop motion look, its crazy to see how far we've come with technology
I love how fluid their motions are
For a second, I thought these were animated smoothly, I did not know these were animatronics
I want to see the exoskeleton of that animatronic I bet it will look cool
Those icicles rise seems like a death trap
What's crazy is how fluid the movement is
When you show the parts where she is fully frozen, you can clearly see 4 "waves" in the cape, showing you where those "lines/rods" are when it is fully extended.
We’re finally leaving the projectors behind for actually good faces on the Frozen characters
I think anna is the most joyful character
The advancements in special effects they've made in the last several years are so dazzling that, to me, the feelings they give must be how people felt the first time they saw the Haunted Mansion or the Enchanted Tiki Room. I'm really glad the company is finally pulling out of the creative slump and restricted budgeting they've been in for so long at the parks.
People really wondered this? It's a whole animatronic, it clearly has intricate building to do the effect
Bruh i thought this was stop motion at first, damn those are some impressive animatronics.
Completely agree- good job 👏🏻
The animatronics at Disney are INSANE
Batman's cape from the Dark Knight movies gets rigid when an electrical current goes through it.
The projections are so effective!
I’m excited for these animatronics, I hope to see them when I go to Disney land for my first time!
The beast transformation is even more amazing than this when you see it in real life.
I definitely love the effect, but my mind wasn't blown trying to figure out how lol. There's a ton of different ways you can do it. Just glad they put the effort into doing so.
I think it looks amazing! And I think you're exactly right about the rods
The animation is so smooth its insane
I think they put rods in the hems of the cape. Extend the rods into the cape for a frozen look, retract the rods for the normal cape look.
HOW IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE FREAKING WATER FOUNTAINS?!?!?!?!?!
I made another video about that too! They’re so cool.
I immediately thought it was built like wings on a dragon
That's is beautiful Elsa and Anna my favorite songs
This looks so beautiful! 🧡 Even the little double-blink Anna does as she thaws looks so life-like (well, as life-like as a fictional Disney princess in their artsyle can look)! I gotta get to a Disney park someday, my inner child is screaming - in a good way, LOL.
Those are some impressive animatronics
Oh my god, these animatronics! I like these ones better than the projected-face ones at Epcot honestly, it’s so much more seamless
*IT JUST LOOKS FANTASTIC* I have a hope for this tech to gain more traction towards the movie-sphere and stop-motion animation has a resurgence
When I heard "Tokyo" I knew why it looked so good
Holy Sh** those animatronics look like the cartoon characters come to life! WOW
It's clearly magic, guys, don't think about it, just enjoy it
“Whooaaa how do they do that” the ice particles are a projector… animatronics have come a long way and can be very detailed.
Those folds look like the natural folds of fabric to me (especially sewn into a "sack" to hold rods in, which falls differently than just a singular piece of fabric), so I think it still may be just one rod. It's still very cool!!
I think there is like air in it, like a floaty mattress, and when she unfreezes the air gets out, and when she gets frozen, there is inputted
The future is developing because these animatronics are more fluid😲
This is absolutely amazing
Sound helps to determine the type of actuator they used. My best guess would be they used neumatic tubes on the cape, they fill them up and get stiff, they release the gas and they loosen.
I thought it was a projection CGI D:
It's soo f## amazing I love frozen
You can literally see the lines where the rods are, of course only because these videos are so clear, when you're on the actual ride I bet that's impossible to see but in pictures it's pretty obvious that's exactly what they've done.
The gorgeous animatronics though
No that's exactly right. It has the pole like stuff in the cape. It extends like extendable wings
It’s like they came to life from the movie damn they look amazing
