You didn't blow or waste a single minute on that super steep hill. You two seemed to be having a blast playing on it. Also, I am sure it takes a lot longer to film something like that. I kept thinking how many times did you guys go up and then run back for a camera? Great video!

the theme of the day It wasn't coinvent to walk up that hill, but you did your hearts good that's what is important walking up that hill and you had a blast together.

I really want to give you guys props, I have been following for about 6 years now, and it was obviously awesome pre-covid, but that was "easy". Watching you guys sail, and travel and explore...really all the things that made this channel so cool was amazing. These last couple of years have been anything but "easy". I really want to thank you for making it so interesting for us viewers, despite ALL the crazy challenges over the last couple of years. Somehow you find a way to continue to come up with interesting content for us. Thank you, and I cant wait to see you guys get the dream boat you deserve, and get back to exploring and traveling the world like you deserve.

Fun fact: This world's steepest street was temporarily not the world's steepest street from July 2019 to April 2020, because a town called Harlech in North Wales claimed they had a steeper street called Ffordd Pen Llech (gotta love the Welsh language) with a gradient of 37.45% compared to Baldwin's 35%. But Guinness gave the record back to Baldwin Street because they determined the best way to measure and calculate the gradient was to do it from the centerline. And according to that, Baldwin Street had a gradient of 34.8 percent while Ffordd Pen Llech had a gradient of 28.6 percent. So the Kiwis stole the Welsh's thunder

There is a very steep road in Cape Town South Africa between two parallel streets. I think it is called Bellevue road. Gradient unknown but it feels at least 25%

How precious, they mate for life & then seeing a pair of Yellow-eyed Penquins sneaking off to their secluded spot. So sad to hear only 200 left. Baldwin Street sure was steep. Can't imagine driving on it, living on it, nor walking on it. You 2 were funny demonstrating the steep incline of Baldwin giving us the impression Jason was clinging on for dear life. So very much enjoy seeing you both & all you share with us. New Zealand is beautiful. Those balls, wow, huge. Looked like the one Nikki was standing next to was placed into that hillside like it belonged there. A lot of mysteries out there. Look forward to next week. Have a good week.

Funny how you described those boulders as concrete, because that's basically what they are! They're concretions (more specifically Septarian), which are masses of matter formed when a mineral precipitates and cements sediment around a nucleus. These aren't just a NZ thing and can be found from Bowling Ball Beach in northern California to Torysh, Kazakhstan. But the Moeraki ones are still special for their sizes because they're typically smaller.

    • @bisonpaleofossilriveradven3528

Nikki I am so happy that you have found a therapist. Even more proud of you and your strength to make this journey. Plus you didn’t give up and found the right therapist w/o just quitting. I’ve taken this journey and it is well worth the time it takes to heal yourself. A lot of people are either not strong enough or have enough patience to go thru this process. Love and encouragement from me to you!! Enjoyed video greatly. Thanks for showing us this part of NZ with all its beauty and unusual places. Y’all are so much fun to watch. On a side note, leopard seals visit NZ this time of your especially on the west coast of the south island. Keep an eye out.

Take me back to my old home town of Dunedin, what a memory tour and the Moeraki boulders was special too as we used to visit a wonderful cafe in Moeraki Bay called Fleurs Place. No longer open just now but maybe again one day when the visitors build up. Really enjoying the land travels as you transition through your break until the next boat sets sail. Kind regards.

For a couple people in "limbo", seems like you're having lots of cool litter adventures! Love that!!
I haven't been in "limbo" since 2010, when I relocated from California back to Texas. Experienced it a few times in my life. When planned (like yours and mine in 2010), it can be very fun and you get to see lots of new things/places. When "unplanned", as in unexpected job relocation or to help family, it can be stressful. I like the "planned" version. Seen a lot of the US and Canada during my "limbo" periods. Thanks for sharing!! Really need to make a New Zealand trip!!

Thank you so much for stopping in our little city of Dunedin, NZ. So sorry for the weather but thrilled that you got to see a pair of Yellow Eyed Penguins (embarrassing pause) as I've never seen them and I've lived here for years. The little Blue Penguins near the Royal Albatross Colony at the end of the Otago Peninsula are also an absolutely delight and you can see up to nearly hundred come out of the water on any one night.

Awww the penguins and their story made me cry. How magical that you got to see them. I’ve seen Fairy Penguins in Victoria. That was special too but not as special as you two alone on the beach with them. ❤️
It looks so cold and wonderful. I am so glad you decided to film more in New Zealand (I have never been even though I live in Australia).
Love the steep hill footage, that made me laugh. Great video all round. Hugs xx

I think I speak for most, over the years of watching we have become even more invested in YOU, than in your adventures. The temptation for many TH-camrs is to film only what you perceive WE will find interesting. Speaking from personal experience, living to please others is exhausting. That is how people burn out. We want YOU to succeed. Please put your own oxygen mask on first. Have Fun, Enjoy, Discover, Experience, and Conquer whatever is interesting to you. If you love it, we will love it. But even more importantly it blesses us to see you happy, and rested, and taking care of yourself. We'll still be here.

Every video you two do is great, but this one is truly one of your BEST! Who'd a thunk some of your best work would be done when you were no longer live on Curiosity! BTW: my Curiosity Sail Duffle arrived two days ago and it's FANTASTIC! I'm so glad I bought it and, hopefully, in a year to two when my catamaran is finished I'll use it to lug some of my gear onto my new floating home. A dream that was awakened by following you, the "Z Crew", SV Delos and more. Thanks for all you do for those who are living vicariously through you and those like me who at age 65 are about to start a new chapter of our lives 'out there on the water!'

Penguins were so cute and your imitation of them was great Nikki. Unbelievable to see that road and I live the way you both crazy filmed it. Oh my gosh Nikki, can I ever relate to your struggle with transition. The past 14 months have been a greater struggle than any other time in my life. I won’t go into details, it’s a long story and we all have our problems, some wayyy worse than mine. Suffice it to say I have been in grief counseling and am so thankful for Laura. She’s a wonderful, caring woman and I appreciate every time I am scheduled to see her! If I wasn’t already seeing her I would probably check out the service you mentioned. It’s a great idea. To anyone struggling right now I can only say if you are PLEASE make arrangements, if at all possible, to get some help. It is invaluable and will be one of the best things you can do for yourself! Thank you both for your wonderful videos and for the services you mention on your channel even if it’s just Surf Shark! God bless you both!

Thank you for talking about mental health. It is so easy to assume that other than the challenges of boat or van life you, and others living that life who share on social media, don't have other challenges. No past traumas, no relational issues with friends or family, no self doubts, no mental health struggles.
Thank you for sharing enough for us to understand that this isn't the case without, I hope, feeling too exposed. Thank you for sharing how you have sought help even from the remoteness of your boat.
I know that sponsorship helps you financially and its also beneficial to the sponsor but more than your other sponsors, I think, I can have a huge impact on an individual viewer. Most of us don't live in places that are as isolated and without access to physical or mental healthcare as you often find yourselves but that doesn't mean that the health professional is the best match. As you said, Nikki, you changed your counsellor twice before finding the one you were most comfortable with. This sponsorship will hopefully give people the courage, the opportunity, the sense of support to try (or try again) to seek out the help they need.
    Again, thank you.

Thank you so much, what a lovely vid! I’m glad you’re ‘keeping on keeping on, no matter what’ because that’s where we learn the most in our lives. I’m with you in my own experience of three years in what seemed like limbo at the time, but proved to be one of the most clarifying times of my life. Your special blessing is having one another with whom to share this waiting time. A trusted ‘friend’, a friend of the heart when you are surrounded by friends of the road. I would not want to be the one to drive down that steep grade with no brakes. There's a steep road leading up to the Universal Amphitheater in LA that I had to navigate in stop and go traffic before a concert, with my little Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission. I'd move 4 feet, brake and pull the handbrake to hold me in position and when I had to move forward again there was usually car inches behind me so I had to take my foot off the brake, gun the engine, then release the handbrake and move another 4'. By the time I got to the top I was covered in sweat from the fear of my car rolling back and hitting the car behind me.

We were lucky enough to visit NZ, both islands in their summer so we didn't see any of the penguins but we did see the BIG BOULDERS & looked up Baldwin Street, then drove up it to look down from the top. Not as energetic as you two!! There are just so many fantastic sights to see. thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories.

Nikki - I totally get it, untethered is a perfect description for many of us. And give it another 20 years, your Mel Blanc impression may just become gravelly enough. Great penguin walk.
Jason - yeah "the cold is worth it" - it's always worth it for that rare shot. And the lens is never quite long enough. In the old days, I found a 2x adapter lens totally worth it, coupled with a mono or tripod. Love you guys.

Incredible stuff that we all may not have seen if not for limbo? If this is the sort of limbo you can come up with we won't get impatient for boat build updates...for awhile. I have to presume there must be some disaster story's at the bottom of Baldwin street, even just a loose shopping cart would slice a parked car in half. I sure hope they're successful with their nesting because they're wonderful. This is the best video I have seen for a long time and I'm sending big hugs to both of you for making me so happy...more limbo please!

If you are interested: The big boulders are carbonate (limestone) concretions, they formed because of microorganisms in the muds after a little bit (metres) of burial. To be a bit more technical, the microorganisms sort of produced an environment where there was a lot more calcite ions in the water in the muds, allowing the calcite precipitation. These appear to be localised in specific areas- why they are so round, possibly due to there being a food source there (maybe- e.g. in the UK Jurassic muds sometimes you find concretions that formed around ammonites). Anyway, at some point pretty early on these things fractured internally (there’s lots of theories of how, from earthquakes to the breakdown of the slime excreted by the microorganisms being the cause) and bigger calcite crystals grew in the cracks, that yellow stuff. The ones you saw are awesome, it’s possibly the only place where you find mudstone hosted carbonate concretions that big (smaller ones are common elsewhere but way less impressive!). Loved your footage. Also the alien idea is awesome, I wonder what people thought of them before we could examine them with science.

Excellent explanation . They could have started with one little creature then over a long time grown into a ball of creatures which eventually solidified

    • @RiP-eq8be
      @RiP-eq8be 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@paulpaxtop1580 it’s more like the environment around the patch of extra-microorganism filled mud was able to be cemented up because they changed the environment around them. Sometimes concretions are formed already at their final size, and sometimes they start small and more material grows outwards, similar to what you said!
