  • In this Episode of Central Hall, three experts discuss the unrest in Bangladesh with host Kapil Sibal and explore the roots of the crisis and implications for regional peace.
    The experts underline that the turmoil is a result of “uneven growth and inequality” and suggest that young people, particularly students sensed that “opportunities are slipping” due to which they started the protests on the streets.
    Further, the experts underline that it was primarily “a people’s movement” and call it a “revolution on the streets” adding that it is wrong to look for “foreign hands or purely political explanations”.
    Ambassador Shiv Shankar Menon, a distinguished diplomat and strategist, brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious career in the Indian Foreign Service. He is a Distinguished Fellow at CSEP, Visiting Professor at Ashoka University and Chair of the Ashoka Centre for China Studies.
    T.C.A. Raghavan, a renowned historian and scholar, offers a unique perspective on the intricacies of the past and their relevance to contemporary issues. With a deep understanding of historical context and a keen eye for detail, he provides insightful analysis on a range of subjects.
    Suhasini Haidar, Diplomatic Editor of The Hindu and veteran journalist, brings a quarter century of experience covering global affairs. She has also worked at the CNN International from 1995-2005. Her expertise spans international relations, geopolitics, and strategic issues, with a special focus on India's foreign policy and national security.

    I'm a Sri Lankan who had the privilege of travelling all over Bangladesh during my 5 year career there. When I returned to Sri Lanka just a week before the 2024 elections, I predicted to my Bengali friends that the situation in Sri Lanka would be mirrored in Bangladesh, even without the opposition's support, because I observed the people were so angry at the lack of tolerance for alternative views and the extreme corruption under the Hasina regime. This is the most balanced discussion I've seen by a group of Indians who truly understand the ground realities. Best wishes to my Bengali friends for a better future after enduring prolonged oppression under the former regime.

      I hope the Indian government, politicians, intellectuals, and more general people realize this. Unfortunately, the Indian government, as well the speakers here, considers the dictator, Sheikh Hasina, accused of all the horrible things you mentioned, 'a friend'. It is giving a signal to the people of Bangladesh, who were on the receiving side, that the Indian government cares more about an individual Bangladeshi leader/political party than the interest and well-being of the Bangladeshi people and the Bangladeshi state. I hope the Indian government and people will stand beside the Bangladeshi people, not the tyrant Sheikh Hasina, and help us to bring her to justice by a fair trial in International court.

      We can't compare a rapidly growing economy like Bangladesh to a struggling country like Pakistan. India must closely monitor the situation in Bangladesh. Since independence, the minority population in Bangladesh has decreased to 8%, while in India, the minority population has only increased. This could be a student-led movement striving for a better-functioning democracy. However, we cannot ignore the rise of Islamist movements in Bangladesh. India will never allow another genocide of non-Muslims in Bangladesh-that's for certain. If it comes to that, India has to dispel millions of illegal Bengali Muslim migrant workers back to Bangladesh. Most of them have illegally crossed the border. The question we have is, if this is a democratic movement, why do Hindus, Christians, and other minorities have to suffer at the hands of Islamists? Are they not a part of your country?

      In recent history, Bangladesh once rose against the tyrant oppressors in 1971 and this time again, against the most heinous dictator of her own soil. Sadly, our success in 1971 has been hijacked by India who thinks she gave Bangladesh their victory against the Pakistanis. While we deeply appreciate the sacrifice of the Indian people, particularly those of the then West Bengal alongside us, and the generous support of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Indian Army, we condemn the efforts of the later Governments of India to undermine the efforts of our freedom fighters and take away the credit altogether themselves.

      @madhukarmurthi9064 bro in a country where central bank needs to manipulate GDP figures and blocks economic statistics and inflation reports,can you really verify the news?The only way is to wait for authenticated statistics and data that can be independently & locally verified and accepted.Again,look at it this way.What do indians hate the most?Islamic extremists and Pakistan winning in cricket.Establishing a narrative that Hindu lives are endangered,Islamic radicals has taken over etc is the easiest way to earn your support.Surely,in terms of national interest people rarely go against their country and rarely question what their own govt incentive is.Jamaat e Islam has never won more than 5% votes in any election,even though we are a Muslim majority country,we have historically voted for more secular forms and lived in harmony w different religions.Again, Indian people has elected a party whose ideology is in Hindu unity.So,If you can exercise democracy and establish such a govt then why we can't? If you fear a Muslim majority rule,then how do you legitimize your own govt?We are not Pakistan,we are not India,we are Bangladesh.Yes we are largely Muslim yet we have fought against Pakistan in 1971.We have a separate identity as Bengali and Bangladeshi, religiously discriminating politics have never been established in our country.Even yesterday when I went to provide supplies for flood relief,we were bringing back two families on our truck,one was a Muslim couple with their child and the other was a Hindu family.They had 3 women,one being the mother,daughter and the other being the wife of her son.The husband was with them too.At one point the Muslim women got really sick and vomited.However,the women helped her clean,gave her water and was sheltering her in their lap while trying to treat her rising fever with a cold towel.It made me so proud of our people,of our unity.All I can hope is that such level of unity will be established throughout south Asia and the world.

    One thing this panel has missed out is the people-to-people relationship which are crucial to draw the bigger picture. As a Bangladeshi married to an Indian for over 30 years, I find it deeply unfair that neither I nor my son are eligible for OCI status simply because we are from Bangladesh. While citizens of almost all other nationalities are granted this privilege, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis are categorically excluded. I believe this policy violates my wife’s constitutional rights and is discriminatory, as it prevents her from extending a privilege to her husband and son that is readily available to others.
    This discrimination against Bangladeshis indicates that the Indian government still fails to separate Bangladesh from Pakistan. Such policies hinder the development of genuine people-to-people connections between our nations. It is disheartening to see that, while our dogs can be friends, genuine friendships and trust between people of our two countries are obstructed, even when family ties exist. I wonder this respected panel can understand why friendship across borders remains elusive when the Government of India fails to recognize the sanctity of marriage and the rights of women to ensure equal rights for all.

    India,
    - The country (India) is run from behind by Hindu extremist organizations like 'RSS', and from the front by the ultra-right Hindu populist party BJP;
    -The basic social fabric and basic political structure of the country currently rests on "Hindu Nationalism";
    -The prime minister of a country is an internationally sanctioned Hindu extremist;
    -The country which claims to be the most vibrant democracy in the world but even after 78 years of independence, its minority Muslims cannot even ensure the right to eat cows;
    -The country's media couldn't capture the democratic mood of running even a talk show without screaming and Modi propagandist leading questions;
    -The country's most educated so-called sophisticated politicians and public intellectuals have to uphold "Hindu nationalism" and write a book 'Why I am a Hindu?', even Congress has to give status on Facebook ignoring the tears and helplessness of millions of Muslims in the country on the day of Ram Mandir inauguration. "Jai Sriram";
    -In a country where mainstream celebrities have exploited the hype of Hindu nationalism in cinema to systematically normalize Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate crimes both on and off-screen in the name of cinema over the past few decades;
    - In a country where the extremists are popularizing the supremacy and power of Hinduism by joining the ultra-extremist celebration of building a temple after breaking the masque;
    There is no oxymoron in the world when the spokespersons of that country show concern about extremism and communal harmony in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has nothing to learn from such a country about sectarianism and extremism. Enough is enough.

    When Indian couldn’t imagine or calculate such a revolutionary move coming it tells how poor the political relationship had been with Bangladesh! India Being Democratic, Pluralistic, Secularist it believed all the good things for India while treating for neighboring nations have been absolutely opposite, treated with all vague tools like conflicts like “Islamists” or “Minorities” etc. India needed to understand long ago that Bangladesh was friendly, secular, pluralistic and democracy-loving deprived of getting fairness in all institutions, India deprived from fair share of waters with LARGE trade deficits. India has been putting all their eggs on Hasina. Hasina dug her grave by destroying her future by leaving the country’s population behind handicapped, embraced the autocratic corruptions that killed the souls of PEOPLE over time.
    India lost all friends around its large land boundaries. Policy and politics must be learned and adjusted by the US-Canada and EU nations relationship.

    One of the best panels for any discussion. One dilemma always stays with me about the region. We can't intrude into the neighbouring countries' internal affairs & challenges like income inequality, suppression of dissent, etc & the political results that they yield. But if these challenges are common across the subcontinent, isn't it possible for a country like India to lead by example. What kind of leadership role can we aspire to at UNSC or G-20, when we can't provide a sort of leadership in our own neighbourhood. However it's important to point out that we are not the only region with such asymmetrical geography facing challenges of coherence. The Americas are an example too.

Examine all the concessions India extracted from Hasina without reciprocity. Did India behave fairly on water sharing, border killings, transit to Nepal and Bhutan?

    You seriously think that the student/ youth wing of the Bangladeshi opposition BNP or Jammat had no hand in the student protests?? No geopolitical help was provided by US through their ambassador who met BNP n Jammat leader. Understandable to meet BNP leaders but Meeting an extremist group like Jammat?? Sick! Yes, Hasina should have handled the protests better. But the protests started due to High court passing a verdict not due to Hasina government bill. Their Supreme Court cancelled their high court ruling on reservations. But the protests targeted the government n didn’t stop. Even Manipur riots started because of high court verdict! Judiciary must not over reach their powers causing unrests!! You as lawyers in the panel should have acknowledged that. Stop destabilising South east Asia! By promoting such things. Stop promoting such hooliganism in the name of protests. Students are young n innocent. But there are forces behind them that leads to the emotional churning!! Media plays a big part. You guys are romanticising with such destabilising protests as people’s movements! It has geopolitical game n help causing such unrests. Our economy will crash n our growth story will be dumped if such things happen in India! Look at our neighbourhood! Have some moral responsibility as people who have a public influencing voice! Respect a democratically elected government n leader! The party n leader who gets majority wins! UPA 1 n UPA 2 didn’t have majority either. Still they were considered democratically elected n legitimate. BJP then had got more seats than Congress under UPA! Still the congress lead UPA was accepted as democratically elected. That is the respect for democracy shown by NDA then. Even now BJP alone has more seats than the whole opposition! They have the people’s verdict! It’s high time you accept it!
