  • Sony introduced the World’s first portable CD player, the D-50 in 1984. Probably this was the very first portable CD player which could produce almost the same audio quality as a CD deck in your HIFI rack. You almost never achieved the same audio quality comparing a Compact Cassette Walkman to any decent Compact Cassette Deck. Although there were Walkmans with exceptional sound quality. The portable CD players on the other hand were able to provide almost the same sound quality as the CD decks could from the very first moment. Obviously there were differences between different portable CD players, but usually they were much more closer to the deck version in terms of the sound quality. The Uncrowned King of portable CD players was Sony, but unfortunately they stopped making these devices, the DiscMans, more than a decade ago. So we got two options Today if we’d like to enjoy our CD collection on the go. The first is to buy an used old Sony DiscMan and pray that it’ll be in a good condition. The second is to buy a new device, as some companies are still making them. But how reliable a new portable CD player is? We’ll find out in this episode…
