I really love your analyses of Angelina's vocal mastery. The most impressive thing about this performance with guitarist, Ivan Mendez, is it is unplanned, unrehearsed & is the1st & only take while she's reading the lyrics. In an interview with Alan Papier, Ivan talked about the year he played for her at her home when she was 12 yo & just moved to LA. When he would show up for a recording session he never knew what they were going to record. First he would visit with her whole family, then they had a nice dinner. Late in the evening they would get down to business & discuss music & what song they might record. He didn't really know this song so she gave him 15 min to learn the chord changes while she got the lyrics on her phone & Grandma Mery gets the videocam ready. Once they determine how much she wants to slow the tempo, she says something like 'just follow me' & off they go, making it up as they go along. He said the only times they did a 2nd take is if he messed up because she never did. So these are just exercises for Angelina, playing with her voice. Ivan said all the home videos of them were done the same way. Alan also interviewed Egil Clausen, who was her main guitarist in Norway from 7-12 yo & he said they worked the same way. He said the 1st take is often "magical."

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice.
The musician is student, immigrant from Mexico Ivan Mendez.
Mendez moved to the United States when he was around 12 years old and says that the transition was difficult at first.
“I don’t want to say it was a culture shock, because it’s not the same move to America from Mexico as the move to America from say, Europe…but I would say it was somewhat of a culture shock.”
Leaving behind his mother and hometown of Colima in Mexico, he says, was extremely difficult.
“The first year was really hard, trying to learn the language, trying to adopt a culture, trying to get friends. It was just everything,” Mendez said.
He said it took him about two years to really pick up English and find himself friends who would help him with his new language.
“I tried my best. Every time I was in a class, I’d sit down and watch how people move their mouth. Try to pick it up from there,” he said. “I’d repeat a lot, everything I heard. Somebody would say a word, and I’d repeat it until I got it down.”
Mendez felt it was extremely important for him to assimilate to his new home.
“If you move here from another country, you must learn English in order to succeed. You can get by just speaking Spanish, but you’re not really going to go farther than anybody else.”
“Ivan’s just been on this great journey and path in life and so we saw an opportunity to help him along with his journey,” said Joe Coughlin.
Mendez says his new family was a perfect fit and that the adoption was the influence that split the old Ivan into the new Ivan.
“I started to get so much more education about everything; life and even music perspectives,” said Mendez.
Majoring in business marketing, Mendez says his priorities are school, then the band, then helping out with the family business.
Although music is a passion of his, he says being an international student means he has to choose his educational career path carefully.
“Because I’m an international student, fees are very, very high for me, so if there’s a class I want to take, I really have to think about if I’ll get something really good out of it.”
He says a three-unit class for him costs around $1,000, which is another reason why he chooses to major in business rather than music.
He says he does have to sacrifice a lot for all the work that goes into being a student and musician.

I am sure the angels and I appreciate your insightful comments and analyzes, in a way that most don't view performances like this. This was the first song I ever heard by Angelina, and I was hooked right away. The emotion that came from that 12-year-old girl was palpable. It is one thing to discover her now and go back in time, but for me, finding her 6 years ago was a blessing in that I could follow her journey to now.
Please begin 2024 generously and spread the love and kindness that Angelina demonstrates and requests from us! Her message is profound and timely. I thank you for providing links to the original video and official channels in your description. Most importantly, verbally encourage viewers to use those artists' links to watch, like, share, and comment. Your verbal encouragement will lead viewers to the artist's links as well as your valuable information, since most do not go to your descriptions on their own. You may also include links to the artists' social media and streaming services. Each artist provides so much joy to all of us, and reactors have a platform that can help boost both artist and reactor analytics on TH-cam. Help enable Angelina to attain her goal of singing to spread love and peace in the world. This should apply to all artists you feature on your channel, in addition to Angelina. Thanks in advance for doing your part. Peace and love.

    Ivan Mendez
Ivan Mendez is a talented guitarist from LA who auditioned to work with AJ shortly after her family moved from Norway to LA, and often collaborated with Angelina. He was amazed by her voice and how she could tell stories with her songs. He said that every time he heard her sing, he felt like he was in a hypnotic trance. He praised her as the best vocalists he ever worked with, and this is when she was 12, to 13 years old. © Larry D. Pifer

His admiration for her talent and ability to captivate listeners speaks volumes about her remarkable artistry, even at such a young age. Angelina's ability to weave stories through her songs and draw listeners into a mesmerizing trance is truly something special. It's evident that their collaboration was not only musically enriching but also deeply meaningful. Thank you, Larry D. @@TheWordSmith365 To give you a rough idea how these sessions usually went down, any time you see her with Ivan (or Egil Clausen when she's in Norway); he would come over to her home and after a nice meal with the family they would get together, figure out what songs they might want to try, work out how she wants to do it, then she would get the lyrics up on her iPad and away they would go in a single take. There are multiple gems that have come from these sessions, but my favorite is her masterful rendition of Stay th-cam.com/video/_GSVPvCy3Yg/w-d-xo.html

Carl, once again I greatly enjoyed your reaction and analysis for Angelina Jordan. The guitarist is Ivan Mendez, who only played for Angelina during 2018 when she was 12 years old. Alan Papier, on his channel, did a interview with Ivan, who said most videos were done in one take, with no practice. If more than one take was needed, then is was most likely because he made a mistake. He learned quickly to always follow her lead.

Carl, this was the 4th song I listened to when I fell into the Angelina rabbit hole in the fall of 2020. The emotion she conveyed moved me in ways that I would never have expected.
It followed my first which was Bohemian Rhaspsody on AGT the Champions. That one song and her interview before it somehow let me know that I had discovered a uniquely wonderful being destined for great things. I grew up in a small town named Eureka, and this was a Eureka! moment for me like I hadn't had in years.
Next I listened to her remarkable "I Put a Spell" on you and I thought, "She's going to take over the world" based on the calm, all-in fierceness she showed at 9.
Then I watched her Norway's Got Talent initial audition of Gloomy Sunday (of all the songs to choose). I asked myself, "How could a bohemian-haired, snaggle-toothed, humble little girl basically win the show with her first performance of an old, sad song most (including me) had never heard of? And what did that bode for her future?"
    And then "A Million Years Ago" . . . 🙏

It's amazing how her performances can evoke such profound emotions and leave a lasting impact on listeners. Each song seems to mark a pivotal moment in her journey, from the captivating rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" on AGT to the powerful and soulful performance of "I Put a Spell on You." Angelina's ability to connect with audiences on such a deep level, even at a young age, is truly remarkable. And her rendition of "A Million Years Ago" is yet another testament to her incredible talent and artistry. It's clear that Angelina's star was destined to shine bright from the very beginning. The emotion laden penetration she achieves is far more than Adele's original.
Basically, it comes down to the fact that Adele is a 'Pop' singer, whereas
Angelina is 'rooted' in 'Jazz', for no genre of music can match the intensity
that comes from a true 'Jazz' specialist.

    • @TheWordSmith365
      @TheWordSmith365  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

You make a compelling point about the depth of emotion that Angelina brings to her performances, particularly in comparison to the original by Adele. Indeed, Angelina's roots in jazz certainly add a unique flavor and intensity to her interpretations. Jazz, with its emphasis on improvisation and emotional expression, provides a rich foundation for Angelina to showcase her vocal prowess and storytelling ability. While both Adele and Angelina are incredibly talented artists in their own right, it's fascinating to observe how different genres can influence the interpretation of a song. Angelina's connection to jazz undoubtedly adds a layer of complexity and depth to her rendition of 'A Million Years Ago.' Thank you for sharing your insightful perspective!

It's incredible how even in those spontaneous sessions, her talent shines through. It's unfortunate they only had six months together, but the mark they left on Angelina's journey is undeniable.

You have a sincere, non condescending way of explaining technically Vocal performance to the layman " that would be me". I truly appreciate your verbal Color presentation...l see what l hear, as a visual artist. Even in bottoming out, she out shone a mashup. As for phrasing excellence, l believe she learned a great deal of that from, believe it ir not, imo, Frank Sinatra. You can see that from " You Make Me Feel So Young. Thank you, Carl.

It's always my goal to make technical aspects accessible and understandable, regardless of one's background in music.
Angelina Jordan's ability to shine even in challenging moments, like bottoming out, truly speaks to her exceptional talent and resilience as a performer. And your observation about her phrasing excellence and its potential influence from Frank Sinatra is intriguing. Sinatra was indeed a master of phrasing and interpretation, and it's possible that Angelina has drawn inspiration from his iconic style.

This was the song that threw me over the edge. Even though this performance is not technically perfect, it’s incredibly moving and emotive. When Adele sings this, you feel her pain. When Angelina sings it, you realize how the lyrics apply to you and to the missed opportunities in your own life. Here’s a mash-up of Adele and Angelina singing alternate versions of this song. th-cam.com/video/IXqpYgv4tBA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Srkg1PC4vgTxfvq1
Although I’m a big fan of Adele, she does not have Angelina’s vocal tools. Angelina covered many Adele songs after this one, and they all sound like they were written for Angelina. If you want to see how staggering her vocal tools and textures are, watch her live cover, at 16, of Easy on Me. Absolutely stunning. th-cam.com/video/Mpw5Q76hWWE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lSnalY5SfyblTsKx

Thank you for sharing your insights and these incredible mash-ups! It's fascinating how different artists can bring their own unique interpretations to a song, and your observation about the emotional resonance between Adele's and Angelina's performances is spot on. While Adele's rendition may evoke a sense of empathy with her pain, Angelina's rendition seems to touch on a deeper, more personal level, resonating with listeners on a profound emotional level.
Angelina's vocal prowess and ability to infuse her own unique texture into covers, even those originally performed by powerhouse vocalists like Adele, is truly astounding. It's a testament to her versatility and artistry, and I can imagine how her live cover of "Easy on Me" at just 16 years old must be absolutely breathtaking.

You're absolutely right about "bottoming out." It's the elephant in the room. But the nature of these sessions at home with the solo guitar accompaniment is more exploration than perfected performance. They agree on a song and then go for it with next to no preparation. Hence the need to consult the lyrics. When she did her 11 or 12-year-old rendition of I HAVE NOTHING, she also topped out. She is not vain. She pushes the envelope and let's us witness her journey. So there will be imperfections. And it's proper for you constructively to call them out as you hear them. If you just pandered to the Anglelina fans, I would stop listening to you. So you go, girl. Don't let any of her fans give you any crap over it. Good, articulate reaction, as usual.

About the "bottoming out", you can also add that this was probably a first take. There would have been no proper rehearsal other than a run-through of chords for Ivan's sake. She probably thought it not worth redoing for the sake of one note. I like this raw, 'let's just do it' style where Angelina is actually practising her craft. You can see a real master at work in this. What other artist would release such footage of their work in progress?

      @TheWordSmith365  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Absolutely, your point about the raw and authentic nature of Angelina's performances is spot on. The fact that this may have been a first take, with minimal rehearsal and possibly no intention of redoing it for just one note, speaks volumes about Angelina's dedication to her craft and her confidence as a performer.
It's refreshing to witness such honesty and vulnerability in an artist's work, especially in an age where polished perfection often takes precedence. Angelina's willingness to share her work in progress with her audience is a testament to her authenticity and commitment to her artistry.
Indeed, watching Angelina in these moments allows us to see a real master at work, refining her skills and connecting with her audience in the most genuine way possible. It's a rare and precious glimpse into the creative process, and it's something that sets Angelina apart as an artist.

AJ uploaded this video on Apr 7, 2018 -- when she was just 12. And, as you say, she demonstrates incredible musicality for any artist, at any age (but we're used to that!). However, you should also consider that (a) she's sight reading, (b) she and Ivan (her accompanist) never rehearsed this (it's likely the first time they did this song), (c) this barely-teenaged Norwegian girl is reading the lyrics (and singing) in English, and (d) she's doing it in the same key and range as Adele's original performance. Every one of those facts is remarkable in itself, but taken together? It's nothing short of genius, and the reason we call her a prodigy. I loved your analysis, and no one can complain about your observation that she's "bottoming out" here (because it's clearly true). Then again, she's also singing lower in this than most adult women can sing -- at 12! Please keep the reactions to AJ coming...

It's truly remarkable to consider the various challenges she faced while delivering such a stunning rendition of the song. From sight-reading and singing in English to performing in the same key and range as Adele's original, Angelina's ability to execute with such precision and emotion at just 12 years old is nothing short of extraordinary.
The fact that this performance likely occurred without prior rehearsal or preparation only adds to the awe-inspiring nature of Angelina's talent and musicality. Her ability to adapt and deliver such a moving performance on the spot speaks volumes about her innate abilities as a musician.
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the analysis, and I appreciate your perspective on Angelina's incredible accomplishments at such a young age. So, after training her voice 4-6 hours a day 7 days a week for 9 years it should be a surprise that she has this kind of control over her breath and vocal cords? Angelina NEVER gets credit for the massive amount of work she puts in to achieve the sounds she desires. She enrolled in an after school music program where she learned how to read, deconstruct and rearrange music and to play several instruments including the piano and guitar which she still plays to this day. She speaks several languages and obviously has an extremely high IQ, not just musical. On top of all this, her GREATEST attribute is that of being a humanitarian, having raised over 20 million dollars for children’s charities worldwide by the time she was sixteen, and feeding the poor on the streets of Los Angeles, just like her grandfather taught her. Even her name tells us who she really is. When translated, Angelina Jordan Astar literally means “messenger of God descends from the stars”. There have only been a few people on earth like her ; they are here to help humanity and then they return to the universe. She reaches into people’s hearts when she sings and makes them cry; well, there’s a reason for that, and it’s not just because she sings the words of the song, she doesn’t sing to your ears, she sings to your SOUL! Good people like Angelina are laughed at by the liberal media, it will be interesting to see where her career goes in the next few years since she is a conservative Christian woman in a liberal woke media surrounded by people with whom she has absolutely nothing in common. If it weren’t for autotune, most of these women wouldn’t even be in the industry. Olivia Rodrigo made that painfully obvious with her live performance, sounding like a wounded animal crying for help. At least Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus can actually sing, Joni Mitchell at 80 was hitting a lot of the right notes, something Rodrigo seemed totally incapable of. Ok. My rant is over. Please try not to react to any performance that has been pitch corrected (95% of studio albums) or live performances where autotune is used. You can download Vocal Pitch Monitor app and you’ll be able to tell when something is pitch corrected. @@GG_AJfan From Angelina in an interview when asked how she learned how to sing she basically said that she and her grandma Mery would watch TH-cam videos of Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz artists starting when she was three and she decided that’s what she wanted to do so she started practicing 4-6 hours a day every day and at 5 started bugging her mother to enter her into Norway’s Got Talent but she was too young. Finally at age 7 she was old enough and the rest is history, as they say. She wasn’t just born with this ability she has. She has certain innate abilities that allow her to accomplish what she desires, but the rest is pure will power, a desire to succeed and hard work. There are a lot of people with natural skills, but if they don’t work hard, don’t have will power or the desire to succeed, they are doomed to failure and will always blame someone else for their lack of success.

    Bottom out????
Angelina Jordan is a remarkable singer who can convey deep feelings with her voice. When she performed "A Million Years Ago" at the age of 12, she did not bottom out on the low notes, as you claim. She sang them with intention and expression, as part of her artistic interpretation of the song. Your analysis seems to ignore the fact that she is not a regular human being, but a gifted and unique artist.
