The song was written by Toby Gad and B C Jean and originally recorded by Jean. Then by Beyonce who made it famous. Toby Gad is currently producing an album of his famous hits, with different singers that he invites to sing. He chose Angelina to record this song for his album which he is calling "Piano Diaries". Toby is also working with Angelina on writing some new songs to be released later. In this recording Toby is playing the piano for her.

Great reaction, thanks. Toby Gad (the piano player) is the original songwriter with BC Jean and he invited Angelina to sing this for his piano diaries release. He has a number of very famous songs that he had written and has re imagined them for this compilation. Angelina has another official video on her channel as well but I must admit to preferring this one.
I pretty sure Toby's intent here, with the "Piano Diaries" project, is to create an album of new originals as opposed to an album of covers. The words and melodies may be familiar, but his personal choices of the artists who will perform the songs likely will not be.
You should hear Toby Gad’s comments about Angelina. He hints that he prefer’s this rendition.

This cover is glorious, it lets her voice absolutely shine. Thanks to Toby for asking AJ to sing this reinvented cover of his song for his Piano Diaries album. Toby is quoted saying, “Working with Angelina has been nothing short of inspiring. Her ability to channel profound emotion through her voice adds a whole new depth to the song.” They are also working on other songs for AJ. This will be huge for her. After 16 years of practice Angelina is all grown up and has now arrived. Please subscribe to AJ's channel - she deserves it.

This version from Toby Gad's album "Piano Diaries" is my favorite & a vocal Masterpiece, IMO. The Official Music Video is quite different, it's more up-beat, pop style with more instruments that's radio ready for her to get introduced to the masses. Great reaction/analysis Carl, I always learn from them. Thanks!
Great analysis of voice. She seems to be able to put a little something special into every word and space in a song yet it is never overdone, messy, too busy, or inappropriate. From sharp diction to her dropping of consonants, slides, her raspy vibrato (I so love that). She is dancing an intricate ballet within all parts of the song--powerful yet graceful, moving yet mesmerizing--leaving you in peace at the conclusion. There will be other great singers--but I doubt there will ever be another Angelina Jordan as she is so much more than her voice.

Depth as in soulfulness. The purity of love comes in many shades and Angelina conveys her interpretation of the love in every song she sings 'for us' When we combine her vocal and artistic excellence with a genuine soulfulness she sings with we have an artist who touches our hearts in such a manner she stands alone. It's about 'who she is' and her love is in our hearts and we are drawn into her world and for those precious seconds we are transformed into someone far away from the challenges of everyday life. And, does that feeling of love diminish when the melody is over? No, it lingers on and our exchange of love with her never fades and nary a day goes by without her in our thoughts. Remarkable? Yes, very much so.

"If I Were a Boy" is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and originally performed by Jean in 2008.[1] The song gained international attention the same year in a version by the American singer Beyoncé, from her third studio album I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Jean and Gad also handled its production alongside Beyoncé. Inspired by the difficult break-up of a romantic relationship, the song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company rejected it. Beyoncé then recorded her own version. Jean was upset when she learned that Beyoncé was releasing it as a single, but eventually, they reached an agreement.
Carl, I feel that it would take 4 - 5 different top tier singers at their best (We Are the World-style) to pull off all that Angelina did in this song. And then of course, those seamless and effortless transitions that you mentioned would disappear.
I also feel this is her best vocal yet - which is hard for me to say because of the emotional effect her music video of Suspicious Minds had on me.😢

Hi bro. I gather you're a vocal coach. Tell you what. Your technical review of Angelina's craft is the best I've heard so far and I've heard many since I met Angelina 4 years ago. I even saw her live in kongsberg in 2022. I can't match your professional expertise, so I'll just say this. Her control, her effortless capability to "float' through the register going to chest, head,mix,falsetto voice, sliding from belting to bass notes(and viceversa) in the wink of an eye more often than not in the same line,word,syllable even in the same wowel is something UNWORDLY. No more barefoot Princess. She's a Queen now. The Queen of Queens. 👍👍👏👏❤️❤️👋
A second version of this was released by Angelina & Toby. A fellow listener played the two simultaneously and believes Angelina’s one vocal track was used in both musical versions. That leads me to ask, how amazing is her vocal performance when it melds equally well with an orchestral version and with a guitar & percussion version?

A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year.
In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the fourth version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.

This is a cover of BC Jean’s If I Were a Boy, as was Beyoncé’s. Reactors need to get their information correct about this song! BC Jean was the original artist and cowriter with Toby Gad of this song! Beyoncé had a huge hit with Toby as the producer, she didn’t write the song.

Hy en Angelina het ook in Londen gaan optree en hulle twee is nou besig met n nuwe liedjie ek dink dit is "My worst Valentine ", maar ek is nie seker nie. Recorded by Reba Mcentire in 2010 and a big hit well before Beyonce, this version is the best

I beg to differ with one thing you said, Angelina has been one of the most skilled vocalists on the planet since she was a pre-teen. Her young body may not have been fully able to keep up with her mind but the technique and vocal agility was there even so. Work with me here and lets do a thought experiment. If Angelina's 10, 11, or 12 year old mind could be magically transferred to her now 18 year old body and you allowed that mind time to get used to it's new home what do you suppose she would sound like? My guess is that she would sound better that most any other 18 year old singer on the planet.
