The majority of the movie is actually a trauma-induced hallucination, as in reality the princess shattered her spine and legs when she hit the bottom of the pit. The dragon isnt real, and she just slowly succumbs to her wounds as she dreams of getting her revenge on the deranged cult who threw her down there.

took my character 2 years of progression to be able to do that with rules and dice rolls,, plus the dm was pretty good at it back then.

So additional comment : Er... the writer does realise how immorally wrong that ending is Right? Burning down an entire castle/town full of possible innocent servants, workers, guardsman and so on who possibly had nothing to do with any of it. Very unlikely that everyone knew about the sacrificing of princesses to a dragon else it would spread like wildfire in rumours to other countries and towns and so on. Yeah sure slaying the person who wronged you is often a moral neutral or good (depending on context) as you're killing a killer or someone who has done evil. But in this tale she is still leaving alive a human eating dragon who has happily partaking in doing so. You are going to be responsible if it kills someone again. Hell it was killing innocent women and if it has intelligence then it would be aware of that so it was happily devouring innocent bystanders. So who is the hero again?

We don't actually see the dragon eat anyone though. The kingdom thinks she does, but uh, all the princess' corpses are in one piece, albeit in a very VERY charred piece but yeah. Towards the end, I was even wondering if she ate anything or what did she eat.Sure she almost ate Eloise, or at least opened her mouth when she was dangling in the crystal tunnel but....the eating didn't happen. Just a whole lot of slicing, squelching and charring as I put it three quarters through the movie when I stopped caring.

Another thing about rejecting the damsel in distress trope is that plenty of woman enjoy it on most occasions, myself included. The lady's in danger? Yeah…I’d rather see those types of stories myself. I don’t have a problem with strong, independent woman saves herself and everyone else movies either. I just get annoyed that it seems as if we are not allowed to have “man saves woman” stories at all anymore. When literally every movie/show coming out features an overpowered woman who “don’t need no man”, it just gets boring. Where are the movies for those of us women who enjoy the damsel in distress trope? At least I have old movies I can watch, I suppose.

      As a man,
I can understand how the damsel trope may have become annoying but it can evolve the right way... But sadly it seems writers who write modern female characters project some kind of power fantasy where they are the one kill Darth Vader or slay the dragon without understanding the origin of the trope, chivalry, honor etcetera.
So we can't just have a lady suddenly be able to wield a heavy sword and kill a beast that has burned dozens of men LITERALLY in one foul swoop. There are ways for her to be feminine, graceful, elegant... Hell she can even help save the prince trying to save her... Establish that she has skills like archery, advanced horseback riding, making small, effective traps for trapping rodents, birds and later builds a simple trap to kill the dragon while using herself as live bait...

I have no issue with women kicking ass in movies. Xena Warrior Princess, Blue Eyed Samurai, and Eowyn from LOTR did it right.
The thing they established is that these women became badass after a LIFETIME of training and combat. Their power and fighting strength was earned just as we would want from any male hero. And even then, both female heroes use their cunning and skill to overpower larger, stronger opponents rather than dealing out haymakers like Mike Tyson
And then stories like Damsel or Star Wars come along and just go “she’s the strongest and bestestest BECAUSE SHES A WOMAN, and that’s good enough!” And they’re just flabbergasted, BAMBOOZLED I say, when we say no, it’s not.

The girl boss trend with Hollywood is really undoing all the hard work that many amazing creators have put forward in actually uplifting and celebrating women heroes. Tolkien has Galadriel as one of the strongest elves in middle earth along with Eowyn and so on. CS Lewis has four children, two brothers and two sister becoming kings and queens of a fantasy world. Hollywood seems to think that they're undoing some great wrong but making women strong or powerful has never been a problem in fiction even since ancient times. Hollywood if you want a woman who has more masculine traits then the character type you're looking for exists. It's called the Tomboy, ya know the kind of woman who is into what men find fun but doesn't hate men for no reason. Girl boss trend at this point is just a cardboard cut out of "I don't need no man". That's as deep as we get with most of them.
Hollywood should be looking at characters like Revy (Black Lagoon) or Ryuko (Kill la Kill). Well tbh any anime character written in the last few decades will put most of current day Hollywood character writing to shame.

I think you, as well as this video are off target with this one. The protagonist wasn't portrayed in the best way for sure, but it's no where near to being the oh "girl boss" bad. She had plenty of "journey" to go through till the end, and for sure the movie isn't perfect but it's got nothing to do with the female protagonist. It was a well made movie that could have been better if they gave her more background and more character but it's good enough and nowhere near as bad as this video and people make it out to be. She wasn't Rey, she wasn't a mary sue.
Sure you can all shit on whatever you want, but there is no reason for girls and women to not love this film for what it is. Oh no a princess is going against a dragon instead of a prince? oh get off it. I expect it to be a disaster but it was perfectly fine for what it was going for.

Ok, this movies started off good but left me with more questions than answers...
1.- If supposedly the dragon kept to herself and it was the humans that started the violence... why would they go into the dragons lair in the first place if it was not a threath? And why of all the people the king had to be there? Why not send dragon slayers or offer a reward?
2.- According to other websites they had to offer 3 girl every 10 years (for 300 years!!!) Did they have to marry the prince or king several times every 10 years? did no one notice the missing or disappearance of princesses over the years?
3.- Of all the items she removed from that clunky ass dress... why on earth she kept the damn corset??!!
4.- If the slugs were magical that could cure anything... why not use them on her father??
6.- Did she really just touch her father sword and suddenly knew how to use it?? is she a Disney-Jedi??
7.- How does a dragon get burnt by it's own fire?? (all of my D&D freak friends lost their sh*t on this one) 🤣🤣
8.- At the end the dragon and Elodie killed more people than the royal family!! she practically turns into Dracarys levels of evil!!
9.- The real hero of the story in her makeup!!

The "damsel in distress" trope is legitimately meant to instill in men that a heroic man endeavors to save and protect a woman/women. The kind of man who would put his life second to the well-being of the woman he loves. How is that an anti-feminist message? Now they could argue that the woman is perceived as the reward for his adventurous exploits but almost all of these stories make it clear that the woman in question is also seeking the affection of said man. That said, I can see how being represented as needing to be saved all the time might be exhausting but in the words of Captain Marvel "It wasn't made for you!"

Christ I am so sick of the Damsel saves herself. They were so mad about the Damsel in distress trope that they made their own trope that is far more annoying. It has gotten to the point that whenever I see a princess get kidnapped these days I just roll my eyes "She's going to save herself." Before I even finish that sentence she is already out of the tower. It is so damn predictable. And what really annoys me is you can feel the writer looking at you and winking saying "Look, we subverted the trope, aren't I clever!". Like they are the first ones to do it when this shit has been going on for at least the last 20 years if not more. It's not new, it's not cute, it was old 5 years ago, and is now a dried corpse. I'm a huge TV and Movie enthusiast, i don't watch many post 2016 anymore because they do this shit all the time. Instead of writing a character who has flaws to overcome, let's say Parents were killed or family were killed at a young age, emotional scarring at a young age from small issues to the big ones that aren't kid friendly, to the villain interacting with said character to try to turn them evil, on their side, or the character saw what the villain did and devoting themselves to seek revenge and obviously along the way realized that while revenge is a huge factor to drive us forward, it blinds us and they must learn to control ones emotions along the way. hell even at the end forgiving the villain, walking away and being forced to take their life which saddens and hurts us the viewers because we know its not what the main character truly wanted in the end. these are just some of the driving factors off the top of my head but it's always Woman Stronk, Man stupid and i mean they make the men absolutely useless only there to hold the precious untouchable main up high so we can see just how flawless they are. it's boring no one on planet earth alive right now is flawless. we see a mouse in science class in a container, you name him George, the next 5 years of Highschool the whole school knows about George, people love George, this mouse is a champ and we love to feed it and take care of it and then one day at assembly they announce George passed away. it hurts, hurts some a lot more who really spent time with him. This is who we are as humans we can connect with anything, your little sister gives you a rock and names it after you because she loves you and you look down into her little eyes and she is SO happy to be giving you this gift, you accept it and keep it. you could throw is away and maybe never hear about it again but just in case she asks where your pet rock you keep it. We do this because of our emotions and our easy attachment to things. That's all writers need to do. Stop the diversity hires who CANT fucking act and write a coherent story with flaws and goals and ambition and drive, failures,. lessons. wisdome learned. fucking ANYTHING but GirlBossing so close to the son the wings melt off and when she lands from 2 thousand miles she turns to the man and blames him for a comment in act 1 that no one fucking remembers or cares about. i watch movies now and i can't even remember names im not invested. if im not invested i wont enjoy it and your movie sucks. obviously taste is different for all but majority of people if they cant see themselves in the hero or understand their motives they wont care. that's why i stick to my old TV shows. Scrubs, House M.D, Psych, Smallville, Community and Chuck. i've watched them all countless times and they never cease to entertain me and hurt me with scenes. Anyway. rant over if anyone fully read all this. Thanks lol

In this case--Io--where we see that she is strong this is demonstrated best in the battle with the scorpions. During me fight, we see Io dashing about trying to stay away from the danger, BUT in one crucial scene, Perseus is under attack and it looks like he might be killed when suddenly in a shot that lasts longer than 3 seconds we see Io on top of a boulder with a sling (a proper female weapon) that she used to cut off the stinger. After that, Perseus actually HEAVES her through a doorway saving her. millie's character was SO obnoxious. her attitude when she meets the prince, doesn't make sense. and i get WHY she is shown the be a girlboss so early on, bc that makes us think, she can survive the dragon later on... cause she's not like the other girls she's a tough cool girl 😏 But just because it is a survival story, doesn't mean she has to be less feminine. in fact the story would be more impactful if she was shown to be more "weak". there is no way SHE would survive.... that sets the stakes extra high. i don't mind the arc of the dragon being fooled by the royals and millie befriends it.. it could still work... AND i actually loved how the dragon looked! really a cool beautiful but terrifying dragon. ..... anyways.. it is the convenient small things that are annoying. her SCREAMING as she was burnt, would make the dragon know EXACTLY where she was... yet it doesn't.... she meets magical glowing snails that can help her see AND heal her wounds. how convenient😏 then the dragon finally destroys the entire city.... cool cool. WHY would millie be ok with that, knowing where she came from? and her walking like a wounded bad@ss in the end... they really thought she was serving... lol but again... a more wounded and barely surviving girl would have been cooler.. kind of like the ending of ready or not. it was cool enough that she survived she didn't need this girlboss strut.

I know feminists who take issue with the Girl Boss trope as well. They have no issue with strong female leads, but in the Girl Boss trope the character is basically a female man. So a woman who is strong in all the same ways as a man, but without any femininity at all.
These particular feminists that strong female leads should be strong, but in a way which is distinctly feminine. And they should have flaws, because it’s patronising and robs women of their agency to depict them as perfect.

I thought the movie was mediocre as far as the story goes. It looked fine but not much else to say about it. I didn't even know it was meant to be an adaptation of St. George and the Dragon. This makes me realize that I can't remember the last time I watched a movie that played the Damsel in Distress straight. I don't have a problem with the trope being subverted, in fact, I kinda do that in one of my stories. I have a princess who is dragged through the gutter for the whole story. She's kidnapped, imprisoned, and has to fight to survive. She's a damsel in distress with an emphasis on the "in distress" part. There are a few alternative takes on the trope that she might fit better. She's not completely useless- as a princess she is also a powerful mage because magic is very common in my story. Despite being proficient with magic, she's not some badass girlboss. I want it to be a story about her struggling to survive until she is saved by a group of heroes.

For everyone in the comments who liked the movie, you should read Priory of the Orange Tree. Its set up on a similar premise, the author drew inspiration from and remolded the story of St. George from a female perspective. It’s got multiple narratives as well and a few different plot twists.
Also - if a girl draws you such a pretty anatomical heart she’s a KEEPER! It seemed kind of cute and I thought you were unnecessarily ragging on the obvious point of her being good at mazes. I'll be "hateful." This movie is a prime example of why the "intersectionalism," "post modernism," and all the current day pseudo-intellectualisms are ultimately foolish. The concept of "Damsel" is actually quite good. In the hands of a good author, I would like to see this tale. However, Elodie (Notice how the dropped the "M" to "Melodie) is rather two-dimensional. The efforts to make her look competent and caring have massive flaws when you look at them. Several people have pointed out many examples, such as chopping wood when she could be doing something such as overseeing trade or something. Her combat skills at the end are chiefly unearned, and her 'badass' appearance at the end is simply to make her 'look badass.'
The crowing moment, of course, is when Elodie climbs the crystal shaft to find she's too high up, and the dragon is there. Victoria, the girl who drew the map, died there, too. There is no legitimate reason the dragon did not roast her there and then. She lived simply for the sake of the plot, and the sake of the plot was to "stick it to The Patriarchy." By the way, I'll be "narrow-minded" and "evil" -- "The Patriarchy" does not exist. Wake up.
I could go on, but at the climax when Elodie teams up with the dragon, and together they "purge the evil kingdom." ... Why? No, really. Why? There is no way everyone in that castle and the nearby area were ALL evil. And do you honestly think the dragon won't move on? Of if that dragon does not move on, are you completely certain she will not have another clutch of eggs, and at least one hackling will not move on and claim who knows how many lives? Oh yes, "They're just evil humans. All humans are evil, and get what they deserve, and aren't i so clever and witty for making such a wide-sweeping assessment." siiiiigh ...
I could think of so many ways this could have been written into a much better story. Here's one. How about when Elodie and the prince talk and get to know each other more, then prince truly grows to like her to the point he finds he can't let be sacrificed. In the short moments they had, they showed one of the reasons he was distant was because he didn't want to get involved with someone he knew he was going to help sacrifice. So how about this for a twist? After he throws her down, there's a pause where you see it from his perspective. She falls. He knows she's still alive and injured. The guilt starts to eat at him. The others try to affirm it's all proper and good, and that this is ONLY way. Then he turns to them, and simply says, "No." And then he quietly steps off the ledge to share whatever fate with Elodie.
but no. That kind of story can't happen. Logic can't happen. It's all to "fight' whatever perceived ills of the world. So yet another potentially good story goes into the sewage.
To quote Az / HeelvsBabyface, "I'm sick of this timeline."
