  • How to defend yourself against two attackers and a brutal sucker punch requires the best self defence strategy for a real fight. So this week we look at the best way of how to defend yourself when you have been sucker punched from the blind side. How to fight well takes intelligence.
    This video draws upon some of our past ideas of how to fight in self defence. So far we have looked at 3 things that you must do to face fear & intimidation in a fight in which we looked at moving to the off side of the person that is threatening you. Then we discussed how best way to knock someone out with one punch. The main point here was where you hit the person in order for them to pass out.
    The second to last video in the series titled ‘Surprise, Punch, & Drop Someone Instantly’ looked at how to deliver the punch without the person seeing it. In other words surprising them with a distraction then punching hard to the solar plexus. Our final video in the series looked at what to do when the guy got too close to you and grabs and headbutts you in a fight. In this video we discussed the idea that the person was essentially trapping their own arm, and this allowed you to take advantage with strikes to the neck.
    Please feel free to watch them again to see how all of this information links together for a great self defence strategy.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Charlie Tate What do you mean by boxing Charlie? They are completely different elements of Wing Chun training. Both with different focus and intention. Think of Chi Sao as what to do when you have contact (a bridge) and boxing as when you have no contact. So in this sense, they are contradictory expression. What you can do however, is move in and out of boxing a few Chi Sao range by breaking and engaging contact. Is that what you are doing?

    Awesome video! One question, say you were being confronted with two guys, and one is considerably larger and stronger than the other, who would be preferable to use as the "Shield" from the other's attack?. Maybe more of a question as to who you should be prepared to take down first.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question, well it's easier to rag around a smaller guy than a bigger guy. But easier to hide behind the big guy. From my experience you never get the choice, when it plays out for real as it all depends on how they approach you and who gets to you first. I hope that helps you.

    Pretty good as usual, sifu, with sound awareness of the issues and some effective tactics.
    However there do seem to me to be a couple of contradictions. I wonder if you would resolve them for me, please.
    Firstly you generally say to hide behind the 1st guy, to hold him as a shield [quite right, can't argue with that, most people agree on this] but then you say to pull down the 1st guy so you can get to the 2nd guy. Would you explain this contradiction? I would rather prefer the former tactic and only dispense with the 1st guy as a meatshield by throwing him into the 2nd guy, once I had thoroughly incapacitated him, and not before.
    The 2nd apparent contradiction is in the hiding behind, down into the chest of, the 1st guy from the 2nd guy punching with no worry about being grabbed, accepting being grabbed in fact... but then you summarise by saying the key thing is to evade and not be grabbed!
    I don't understand the raised chambering of edged hand to chop at the brachial or throat shown at the beginning and in other vids.... surely it is telegraphed and violates Wing Chun principles of direct line of attack and economy of motion? Puzzling. I would not use it... just hit directly.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Skipp Thank you for the questions Daniel, you are very meticulous as always. Lets address them. Firstly, the strategy relates to who punches first. In the example you mentioned the guy in front punches, so I snapped him down and stalled the other guy by hitting him. A point to note is that once the first guy moves, so will the second guy. If you focus all your efforts on the guy in front then you will be exposed to a circling second attacker. This doesn't contradict my first point of shielding as the shield in this case is fighting me.
      Secondly, in the summary I said "grab hold of me and take me down". Meaning I don't want to be taken or dragged to the ground by multiple attackers. I'm sure you agree that this is very different and not contradictory as my goal is to survive and run, therefore being pulled to the ground is dangerous for me. BTW, I did address this point in an outtake.
      Lastly, Daniel not knowing your level of experience it is difficult to respond in a manner that you may understand. However let me say this, real world applications require flexible fighting strategies that you can adapt when it does not go to plan. From my considerable experience of application fights will go wrong, so you have to address each situation as it comes.
      Hence your last comment on preferring to punch and fight first. That's fine and your personal preference. As for me, from my experience I've found it safer to bridge first. What I teach is the difference between the theory and application of Wing Chun. Some people simply teach from theory without ever having tested Wing Chun (in any condition), and therefore they do themselves and their following a dis-service. Please appreciate that I teach openly and honestly from experience not fairy tales.

      Fight SCIENCE
      Thank you very much for your most interesting, meticulous and generously considerate reply, sifu, as usual.
      I very much appreciate that your theories are battle-tested and derived. This is rare and I value it highly...
      Still, I want to make logical sense of it ;-)
      What has worked for one skilled guy, your good self, in some fights may not be optimal for all guys in all fights.
      OK, I get the variation is to suit the variation in which one attacks first.. and the applicability of the attacking the 2nd guy in that he needs stalling. It's an efficient plan. Yet it still seems to counteract the plan of hiding behind the 1st guy. You lose the benefit of hiding... What am I missing? Why not simply continue to hide, by circling oneself away from the 2nd guy and by controlling the 1st guy to interpose him? Continuing to evade, while fighting the 1st guy, would achieve all the goals, of beating the 1st guy while not being reachable by the 2nd. By going for the 2nd guy to stop him attacking you actually expose yourself to him. You thus choose to fight on 2 fronts, that worst case you wished to avoid. Why not keep hiding?
      I apologise if I am being dense in not getting your point.
      Oh dear, I do hate to be so seemingly pedantic and apparently difficult with such a wise teacher as yourself... I don't comprehend your 2nd point either! Your surety was misplaced! This text is running on too but I am trying to be clear.
      While of course avoiding being grabbed and pulled down to the ground should be a top priority in multiple attacker scenarios [a point I myself endlessly hammer into the dense skulls of BJJ fans, to no avail] I fail to see how this evasion of being grabbed
      is not stymied by choosing to allow the 1st guy to grab you. It seems a simple contradiction. Again, I must be missing something. I thought I was smart! Of course you don't really want the 1st guy to grab you but, ever practical, you accept that is a likelihood, and I assume you would be trying to hand control to prevent it, but still your stated acceptance of being grabbed troubled me. It does not really bother me as I see him as quite controllable and, as you say, the grab does not stop you taking him out. It is just the verbal expression of principle that confuses me.
      A most interesting and, I feel, critically strategically important answer re the chop. Thank so much for sharing that. So... I can see how the move would be a good bridge-gainer, arm-clearer and focus-distraction. So you feel there is some drawback to an initial straight punch? Would you share what those drawbacks are? I totally agree that gaining contact [the bridge] to gain sensitivity and potential control is a huge benefit, one that most punch-orientated fighters miss out on... I just wonder how passing over the opportunity for the most immediate and rapid one shot KO solution [that wins so many fights] is optimal.

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Skipp Oh, Daniel you're making my head hurt ha ha... OK. You could hide behind the guy in front that punches, but you have a split second to react to the movement of guy two. Guy one will invariably pop up quickly after the snap down, this then gives you the opportunity to continue with the game plan of hiding behind one and away from the other. What I teach my students is that perception is key, you must be aware where all your attackers are to remain safe. What happens to most people is that they become tunnelled visioned and focus on one person at the detriment of missing the other attackers. What I am teaching is more an awareness of all attackers. Hence, if you hit the second guy you are stalling his pursuit, but also improving your awareness of what both attackers are doing. As I said, you can then continue to hide behind attacker one when he pops up swinging punches. These strategies are interchangeable in reality.
      Remember this is only two guys. If there were three then I would definitely choose the strategy of constantly hiding. Please see our other video on defending multiple attackers. I discuss the difference between circles and lines. It's an old video but gives some additional information.
      Re: allowing him to grab me. I don't want to be grabbed at all it slows me down and makes me vulnerable. What I've noticed from training people in these tactics is that when they are grabbed they naturally grab back. Essentially they go into wrestling mode. This is the worst thing you can do as it ties up your own hands, so you can fight or punch back, and again you become tunnelled visioned.
      So I emphasis the point to my students that if grabbed don't panic and grab them back, instead ignore the grab for the moment, buy time by stalling the last second guy, then return to the problem of being grabbed. It seems to work well for them under pressure testing.
      It's all about visual awareness. If you have no idea what your second attacker is doing then you will struggle to survive full stop. Worst yet, the second guy may pull a knife and you will have no awareness.
      This is a really detailed area of study that I can't do justice in a 4 minute video. Instead I have to give very simple points that may help or advise. After that you need proper instruction from a competent teacher.
      I hope this all makes sense. Our work is often emphasises concepts to follow as the material is freely available on TH-cam to a range of different people and abilities. Any questions please revert back to me. Take care.
