    What a brilliant job you have done creating and delivering this video Chai, again making use of the knowledge of the local people to explain the event. From that, and on the move, I can't imagine how difficult it would be talking to the go pro and keeping track of what you are saying and what next to cover, walking around with so many people everywhere shoulder to shoulder and all the drums and music happening around you whilst scaling up and down hundreds of stairs and watching out for thieving monkeys at the same time. Legendary stuff, great location and a fabulous most enjoyable if not painful looking ritual. You have done the Malays proud. Well done champ 🤩

    Been a long time since I've watched a Thaipusam festival especially the Kavadi carriers in real life. We used to follow them around when we were kids back here in my hometown during the festival. I think we follow around every single festival march even the lion dance back then 😆 Thanks for the video of this colourful celebration, Chai. Brings back a lot of childhood memories

    Great video. You covered Thaipusam, probably missed the Chinese New Year earlier in late January? Do cover the Eid (and few last days of Ramadan before Eid) between 20th - 25th April . Then you have covered the main celebrations of the main races (Indian, Chinese, Malay) in Malaysia. There are some more celebrations in East Malaysia too.
    She sold you 2 because it's easier to sell without having to give coins change. It's common in Malaysia to round up your buy. No ulterior motive most of the times.

    Glad I re watched this 7 months on. It would be good if somehow all these videos could go back into circulation rather than tucked away in archives that the youtube world of people rarely come across unless they actually, like myself, went looking for it. Cheers champ.

    That was indeed a very colorful video. Those multi colored steps with the massive crowds of people moving about was my favorite part. And it looks like Capitalism is alive and well mixing with religion.

    If I'm not mistaken, the Hindus broke the coconuts not because the pavement is hot and it can cool the sole of their feet. They broke the coconuts as offerings to the gods.

    • @Chai_Travel
      @Chai_Travel  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s true as well. I have to say a local friend told me this. It’s definitely an offer.

    If you have ever seen the vegetarian festival in Phuket, you know Hindhus aren't the only people who make themselves suffer.

    • @Chai_Travel
      @Chai_Travel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was at some festival in krabi years ago not knowing what was really going on. That might have been the same festival? Christianity has is some parts of the world also something where they suffer i think. I’m not very familiar with it but I find it interesting:)

      That’s it. I remember my host from the guesthouse was saying they do this to scare the demons away of the town. I’ve never factchecked it though. It definitely looked impressive

    Not his birthday, Thaipusam is a day which Lord Murugan gets his weapon from His mother to kill the demon. He is God of War, so his devotee prepare themself to be his warrior to kill the demon within us like “our own bad habits” without eat non vege talk less clean and without lust or sex. So people proof themself they are ready for the battle show they are painless infront of him and settle their vows to him like kavadi, needle stick, carry milk pots.

    Chai, Thanks for the show. The lady who sold you the curry puffs literally ripped you. Paying RM3 for two pieces of shrunk curry puff is bordering on insanity ! She could have offered you without charging anything cause it was an auspicious day and you being a foreigner. That would have been a very magnanimous gesture on her part given the significance of the day.

      The temple management rips of the vendors. The vendors ripoff the tourist and others. Its a cycle. This will continue as its a family business striving upon religion

    To those who are asking why they are doing the needle thing in their tongues.
    Disclaimer : if you think god murugar as the hindu religion portraits then it is not for you people :
    Here it is:)
    Murugan is a tamil god. He was a sidhhar which means he was also a warrior (that's why they are doing the needle thing that we should have the power to bare the pain and injuries caused by wars and and we should sustain in the battle to get victory. Still we are doing it to retain the history and thanking him that he was war god who did wars to protect tamil people) he introduced agriculture that's why green is represented for muruga, he did many good things to tamils in many ways, he was also called tamil god that he helped for the development of the language tamil to us.
