Wow!! I have been searching for how to do this for so long. Thank you so much for the video, for how you carefully explain everything you're doing and why, and for your template!! Looking forward to learning more! When I was trying to duplicate the line I learned that instead of doing a CTRL J and moving the line down, you can just go to the curve that you created, and press enter on the keyboard and it will bring up a move/duplicate screen. You tell the system the distance between lines and check the duplicate box and it will do a perfect duplication taking some of the work out. :-) for this one I did postive 5 Horizontal and positive 5 vertical then I did okay reselected the first curve and pressed enter then did a -5 horizontal, -5 vertical, and checked duplicate and it was about 17 to 22 lines.
Mensch Mesch, that is an outstanding tutorial. Thank you for producing the tutorial in English. I first heard another of your tutorials in German (I don’t speak) and followed the steps watching the cursor movement. It made me wish I spoke German. LOL. Then I found your English tutorials. I really appreciate your good pacing (not too fast on the cursor moves) , your good use of showing the key strokes commands onscreen, and the use of the pointers, etc. Also, your very good English (accent is excellent, and tone or voice is very good for narration) and clear descriptions of steps to take. I also very much like your teaching pace (not too fast), which is good for someone who is trying to learn (as I am a newbie to AD). Thank you for doing the great work, I will subscribe.
I don't usually feel inspired to comment on videos but THANK YOU SO MUCH for making such a wonderful pattern tool. I really appreciate it. I look forward to to watching your other video tutorials.
Mensch Mesch, well done, Sir. Even me is now able to "pattern" nearly everything inside everything - with a little help from AD...:-) PowerThanks! Dankeschön!
Norbert, thanks a lot for a great template and tutorial. Special thanks for making it in English:) One question. You kind of recommend to use a pattern in other project by filling the required area with a bitmap that can be after that rotated, shrinked etc. But resizing of the precisely built pattern, especially stretching negatively impacts the sharpness. So why to go to raster format instead of keeping the pattern in a vector format as long as possible?
Hi Ted North, thanks a lot for your compliments! To answer your question Ted, I try to use vector patterns as long as it is possible but if you switch to a different application or use simple styles in Affinity Designer you are forced to use bitmap based pattern. I sincerely hope that Serif in the future will support vector pattern in Affinity Designer. BTW - their old vector application DrawPlus supports vector pattern and vector pattern are also interesting in webbrowers as SVG-files. Keep on drawin' Norbert
Hi Norbert. Thanks for your prompt response. I agree that bitmaps probably will be necessary for exchange with the other apps. But sharing the patterns between several AD documents (and that is what you demonstrated in your tutorial) will be easy while keeping the patterns in vector format, simply because Assets repository is shared across all opened AD documents. And even if we need to use some pattern on the other machine there is an export/import of the assets that will keep them in vector format during transfer. Or I am missing something here? Thank you. Ted
Hi Ted, sharing patterns between AD documents with assets is fine in many situations but... Let me say you have a little pattern with many nodes/anchor points, curves and some effects and duplicate them with the symbols technique that I've shown in my tutorials that will reduce the performance of AD in your documents. You may see that in some of my pattern tutorials when I use a 3D effect e.g. Chain link mesh (th-cam.com/video/7mqO3LyudUE/w-d-xo.html) or Spaghetti (th-cam.com/video/NVXcZXbNz_g/w-d-xo.html). Another point is the inaccuracy of AD when you align the symbol containers (rectangle) next to each other like in the preview in my template. There are sometimes little white spaces/lines between the perfect aligned rectangles in the preview or in the zone where you use the pattern. For print purposes you should have a detailed look at the pdf export if these lines are visible. They cam make your prints unusable. When you would like to scale and/or rotate your vector patterns as a fill of another object you should take care that your strokes have *Scale with object* in the *Stroke panel* enabled. Keep on drawin' Norbert
Hi Norbert. You've made very good and subtle points. While AD performance with multiple symbols might be not so critical issue for me, the other one - inaccuracy in alignment looks like a serious problem. Thank you for pointing that out. Maybe you already informed Serif about this deficiency and the issue was put on their bug fix list? I also appreciate your recommendation on scaling/rotating of vector patterns in relation to scaling strokes. This is a must-know thing. I just finished with the Hatching pattern and going to experiment with many others, so I probably will encounter these subtle issues here and there. Your guidance is invaluable. All the best. Ted
Hi Ted, Thanks again for your nice comments! I informed Serif a few months ago and I hope this problem will be fixed in (near) future. All the best for you too! Norbert
I will not ask you to do your turorials in french 😉 Either in english or in deutsch I can follow them both because I'm an alsacian 😂. And yes they are EXCELLENT !
Wouldn't it be more useful if the pattern were exported in vector format (e.g. SVG) to keep all the advantages of a vector element, especially being resolution independent?
Yes - in deed! It would be better but unfortunately AD did not support vector patterns yet. It would be sooo nice if Serif would support these kind of patterns.
@@MenschMesch Though I'd not actually tried it myself I was afraid this would be the case. In my view the lack of support of true vector elements in terms of patterns and - very important - brushes is regrettably one of the major shortcomings of Affinity Designer. I really do like to use the program/app for various projects by now but I'd wish they'd finally implement "real" vector brushes land vector patterns like the ones in Illustrator - what's called "vector brushes" in AD unfortunately are just (ultimately resolution dependent) bitmaps applied to a vector path...

I feel like this would be much easier if you started on a much more basic level - this jumps around to symbols/assets/targets & your layers panel is full of things that are cluttered & stacked to where I can't tell where everything is. Don't you feel that starting from scratch would be easier to follow for any of us who are newer to this?

Mensch great tutorial. Only problem I have with it is how you get the symbol inside the circle and rectangle, and to alter as you change the symbol.. Sorry to be thick on this, its my age I am afraid.
Thanks for your comment PBFPartnership! I guess that you mean the preview of your pattern on the right hand side. If you can't see your pattern in this area it's probably caused by your layer order. Please watch this part about the elements that should be *inside the rectangle* in your symbol layer. th-cam.com/video/dj2t50BLyPg/w-d-xo.htmlm48s
In the Preview layer, you have a Preview circle ( in eclipse form) and Preview right ( in rectangle form). In Preview circle, there's a circle on top, followed by a number of symbols as patterns, then finally another circle at the bottom. What's the purpose of that? I hope my question makes sense since I'm trying to make the same pattern template from scratch for better understanding :).
You are right! If've used the portrait rectangle as a clipping mask filled with duplicates of the symbol and on top a circle with an outside stroke also working as a clipping mask filled with duplicates of the symbols. It's really a simple pattern template.
Hi, I've been using this video a lot lately... brilliant work. However... one question... if you still check this account obviously. I have tried to create the hatching pattern but without a background fill. I managed to do this easily but for some reason the fill remains in the preview on the right. Any suggestions?
Hi Mark, it seems that there is a "copy error" in my first template version. I've created a new one for Affinity Designer 2.x as a template file where you can delete the fill color and all instances of the symbol will follow. You can download the new template file here: mensch-mesch.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/AFFINITY-DESIGNER-PATTERN-TEMPLATE-V2.0.aftemplate.zip. Have happy and peaceful new year!!!
Thanks again @@MenschMesch That seems to have fixed the issue, brilliant! Just one other thing. There seems to be very thin gaps between the repeating pattern. I can't seem to make it completely seamless. Any suggestions?
Ah no, how annoying! do you have the link to the thread? I'm on the affinity support forum too so maybe I can add my question to it and hope we get a response. @@MenschMesch
