@@goku445 that got nothing to do with being well organized. teams back then had been aswell organized. As u can see in this videol there aint anything that left nothing to chance, everything got a purpose.
Its rather because todays game gone soft. If u play like that u have to be aggressively and trying hard to stop the player immediately who receives the ball, no matter how.
If they pressed today like that most likely it would result in a foul in favor for the ballhoder and while most player would still be in one place, the whole other side would offer free space and free teammates, that would be deadly.
Back then the ref didnt whistled for the slightest touch so it was more effective

Now compare that with 0:06 and 4:05 in the following video. both fouls werent even a yellow by the way.
Of course there is competition, but competition under too obsessively restricted rules. Today is competition in a cuddle time of football

because the rules have gotten pretty soft. A foul like that one at 6:19 would be a red card by todays standard. Even the slightest touch would be a foul, allowing the opponent to expedite a freek fastly while the pressing team would still be unorganized. That would be deadly.

Ajax academy still train their youth with this philosophy, but it has adapted to the change of time (IMO).

  • @Pelerincha
    @Pelerincha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First of all there were no centerbacks but one center fullback and one sweeper(Haan), who moved up towards midfield, the goalie sort played the sweeper spot when needed to come out of goal. The goalie grew up playing street soccer in the streets of Amsterdam. So yes became goalie but with field player abilities. The left fullback, a former wing, would overlap at times and Van hanegem the left halfback determined the tempo of the game with Cruyff playing a false #9, leaving space for Neeskens ,the right half back to run into the open space.
The concept was that Rensenbrink the left wing, was to Never lose the ball allowing Cruyff to play all out 100%. The left of this team was actually the playful, creative side where the right side held to it standard format..... The Centerhalf Wim Jansen basically always played behind the ball and sort stayed in the center.
The word Total Football is a misnomer for the team never played Total Football , that was term made up by the press. In the autobiographies of Johnny Rep and van Hanegem, Jan Jongbloed ,the goalie also stated this and others on the team, they NEVER heard of the concept Total Football. As a matter the team began jelling together all of a sudden right after the first game, but before and during the qualifications they weren't known as playing Total football...The pieces began to fit....Realize Michels just copied the Hungarians and Brazilian team of WC '70.

I think this team would be punished by any other team that knew how to switch sides. They normally press in mass. So if you can bring them to one side of the the pitch and send the ball quickly to the other side you'd be catching them off guard. A team with Robertson and Arnold will do the trick

Netherlands:- "Who's gonna want to score goal today??"

Gegenpress, is a more refined version of this hard press, that looks crude by modern standards. But was very cutting edge stuff, back then.
