Dude you absolutely should make that video. I loved the amp, but I couldn’t justify keeping it. A simple hack to keep these running is a great idea, they sound amazing.
@ I’ll actually do that , because I had one of these for 3 weeks and done what yours is doing without the equipment board in the fix loop my channel is Nafe plays guitar I’m just starting out trying to figure everything out so please disregard the quality of the videos 😂 I’ll reply to this once I’ve put it up, it’s a 3.00 fix and I. One it yesterday these amps hating getting hot, this practically amp brand new because I was too scared to use it so I seldom did then one hot day it just done what yours did.Look I’m no electronics expert but by running a fuse of a certain resistance or resistor it’s how they replicate the brown sound without a variac, I think it’s the output transformer fuses , I’ll find a schematic.
@@jordansguitarchannel3809 Do it man. It took me a little fiddling with to get the sound where I like it but even my bandmates told me the other night that the amp is sounding really killer now. I honestly had my doubts about it for awhile when I first bought the thing but I finally got my combination of boost, gain, and eq set up really nice.
It sounds like either a bad cable. Ive had this issue before too. I used a bad cable in the effects look. If I turned the gain or volume up enough, it would feedback like crazy. Every now and then, it would get super quiet and cut lots of gain. Got new cables and it hasnt happened since. Its been over a year since it happened
Just to let people know i got the 5150 1X12 combo amp back in 2017 and 3 years later i lost the green and blue channel, so when i looked at what was going on there seems to be a component that has burn out cause my tube dies, id power on with new tube it works then turn off and back on and back to the same ? the red channel is all that works now and thats all i love anyway, so even expensive amp gone bad for me as well, my original 5150 peavey never had any of this LOL !
I’m sorry to hear man, I know the old school stuff I feel was built tougher. The stuff I used and abused for shows never had issues, even had a few beers spilled on it. 😂
@@jordansguitarchannel3809 Ya thanks man, sorry to hear this has happened to you as well ,is there anyway you can get it fixed with the warranty ? Well i guess once in a while we will all have some problem's with lemon's parts LOL !
@@jordansguitarchannel3809 I did have a 5 year warranty and i had two years left when it happened but i was kinda hesitance too do it cause i always think something will come back worse if you know what i mean !
Bro I get it, and sadly been there. My EL34 had to get the effects loop fixed came back better somehow, stronger and meaner. Guess someone up there like me. Haha
I had issue with mine. Was playing well then volume dropped and smell of electronic burning. Put it in standby and turn it back on and it was playing normal. Idk. Got me a 6505 1992 original after that.
Sounds like the preamp has completely died. I had that happen on a brand new Bugera years ago. No doubt the cost cutting on these amps goes deeper than the transformer and few tubes..
Mannnn brotha. I am really sorry this happened to you. I was really excited to see your review of this amp after the other videos of you showing other products with this amp. It sounded KILLER ! ! ! Ah well, one door shuts and another one opens for you to bring in something else that just kills it. I am behind you either way.
Sad sir. 😢 but I see you have connected pedals. Can we connect them to the amp’s front with the attenuator? Or can we connect them to the fx return with the attenuator?
No the pedals all run into the effects loop and into the front of the amp. The attenuator is running speaker cables from the cabinet to the attenuator back to the amp speaker input. Hope that helps.
Sob, I just just bought one these on ams 8hours ago, hasn't even shipped yet. Man i already own trip rec, jsx and a 12 year old 6505 , played the 40watt combo at gc and frickin loved it. I wonder if this is a common problem with them. Sorry to hear that (for you and me possibly). Because i dont know if i should cancel my order or if its something that might be a simple fix?
I spoke with James Brown, the guy who designed the amp. He said there was a small batch that was like mine. I’m thinking you should be good bro, keep me posted though. Good luck Bro.
No they didn’t fix it, apparently a small batch had too much soldering and glue on the circuit board causing the preamp to go out. This is according to James Brown the designer of the amp.
Just took mine out of the box and have the same problem, on full power hardly no volume and only a little gain on channel one no gain at all on channel two. So I guess I'm going to call ams now, man what a bummer😢
Bummer, but this is now the second time I have heard and issue with this amp so soon after a purchase. I was going to pull the trigger on one but the MIC has me re thinking the quality after this video.
Yeah I’ve been hearing mixed reviews. It sounds great, but quality is lacking at least on a few. Stay tuned I’m working on something addressing some issues.
I’m running the noise gate with the four cable method into the effects loop back out into the eq pedal and then through the pedals and it returns to the amp and effects loop.
Yeah man that’s completely broke there, EVH is owned by Fender so you know they cut costs everywhere they could. Ever since the iconic was announced we all knew it was a cheap second grade version of a 5150, if anything I’d recommend a ENGL they’re like a 5150 on steroids of course I only know that because I use modelers 😅
I’ve been drooling over the 40 watt combo. I hate to hear this about the amp. I was steered to the evh over the dsl40 because of issues with the Marshall. Plus playing them both at GC I like the green channel much better on the evh. I don’t do much metal but I want to go there on occasions without pedals. I hope there is some resolution for you but now I am thinking if I should back away from the evh.
I’d do some more research, unfortunately I had a bad amp. I spoke with the Amp Designer and informed me they had a small batch with issues. I have another video discussing it.
Yea bro send it back. Get that engl fireball or the stealth. But with you having the el34 evh I'd say go engl. Or just cry once and buy the badlander lol.
This was probably with the effects loop. Make sure the footswitch's effects switch is on if your loop goes through it. UPD: Oh, pardon me please, so your pedals all go before the input, so you don't use the FX loop? If so, then this is really weird. UPD2: Yes, watched till the end, this is so weird. I had a similar thing with some pedals too, are you sure all of your cables between the pedals and till the amp (so the instrumental ones) have one black circle on the end? Check that all of your cables among the pedals and the amp are "TS" instead of "TRS". It is a pity to know that you have gone through that. I hope it all gets solved! But, I will never go back to Iconic after 5150iii el34 (both 50w and 100w) versions. Those are just better to my ears for some reason, while iconic is a little more sterile and "digital", if I may say so. This is why I wondered why you got it :-)
I appreciate the eagle eye, and feedback. I did indeed use the efx loop, and the pedal with the amp doesn’t control the Iconic. All the cables are correct and plugged in correctly. I do believe it’s just a bad effect loop, nonetheless unacceptable. Something much more awesome and curious is coming to the channel. Stay tuned.

Sadly it wasn’t bad cables. There was a small batch of these amps that had too much glue on the board, melted when hot and shorted out the preamp.
