    I said the same thing to Brian Wampler on his SLO-30 demo - it’s great to hear an overview of a high gain amp that isn’t just 10 minutes of chugga chugga drop C tuning, so thank you for that, it’s helpful to be able to hear the full range of what the amp can offer. To my ears it sounds like a really great and affordable way in to 5150 tones.
    The 5150 Stealth was Ed’s last iteration of his range of amps, so in terms of future videos a comparison between the Stealth and the Iconic would be cool to hear (if you have the time and inclination!) with an SM57 on that cab.
    Thanks again for the demo :-)

      Actually Edward was HIGHLY involved in the creation of this amp.

      @@Big_Uncle_Randy I don’t doubt that - I just meant that the Stealth was the last production model that he actually used. Would be interesting to hear the two compared.

      I never understood why the 5150 was designed as a super high gain amp. Here on YT EVH fans seem to be using something else, while these are used for the sound you mentioned. I'm not a fan of the drop chug stuff. It all sounds the same to me, and I don't care for the message in it.

    I just picked this head up a few days ago to pair with my Marshall 1960A cab with GT12-75 speakers.
    Excellent, no-frills video and straight to the point without excessive noodling. Great video brother - you sound a bit like a New Yorker !!! Cheers from Canada! Thanks for the video - I can see u can play good as well - nice vibrato !!!

    You did a great review of this amp and actually made it sound better then most videos I've seen on this amp. What you refer to as cold is what I think I don't like about this amp. To me it sounds artificial, missing the warmth an all tube amp has. I think for gigging no one would even notice, though.

  • @johnsguitarmusicanddemos

      Helps if someone knows how to dime a amp out but almost to the point of no return like edward did he did things eq wise that a lot of players over look to get a amp to respond and no not the typical i better add a volt attenuator etc the ears and the feel .

      When you also consider the built-in Boost pedal switch... you REALLY don't need an overdrive. I think the only reason to get an OD for this amp is just to add something like a 3rd or 4th channel voicing......

    The reverb sounds terrible imo. But great video, and it's true. When I was a kid the gain knob would be on 10. With age I have dialed it way down and I play down tuned metal. Getting that tight sound and being able to hear the strings is more important than fuzzy chugs. Especially with 7 strings.

    • @jannevaatainen
      @jannevaatainen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also really depends on the music. Reduce the gain on At The Gates' "Slaughter Of The Soul" and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work so well. But generally yes, people should at least try to use less gain, especially when recording.

    Good point on the resonance control.
    Many players use it as a bass boost, but really, Ed and James originally intended it as a way to "tune" the Amp to the cabinet/speaker combo being used which was a great idea.
    On my old blockletter, I used various cabs....The 5150 with Sheffields, a Hiwatt with Fanes, and Marshalls with Celestions, and I was always able to get the tone I wanted.
    Great demo...best so far on this head.

      To be honest, I don’t think any of the EVH amps sounds like a Soldano even though there’s a lot of people who have said they amp is based off it. I bought both the EL34 and the 6L6 last Saturday. I set them both up next to my JCM 800 and I have to say, the EL34 gets pretty close to the JCM 800 tone on the green channel with overdrive on and drive set about 2. With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 12 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close
    On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 12 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavvier stuff. I don't like the burn button, it is just way to much. I also running a CE5 Stero chorus, HOF Reverb, FlahBack2 delay and a EH 720 Looper in the effects loop and do not use the amp reverb.
    In front I am running Les Paul Custom Shop into a TU2 tunner, into Boss 200EQ to better shape the tone, into Morley Mark Tremonti Wah, then to TS9, SD1 and OC5 Octave. Last in Chain is NS2 Noise gate. The EQ pedal allows you to refine the tone really well. After 5 days of having both, I settled on the EL34 and returned the 6L6. The El34 is just a little more reminiscent of the classic Marshall tone. A bit warmer, and not as harsh as the 6L6. If I was a hardcore metal player, then the 6L6 would have been my choice. For me, the EL34 is a winner. And I forgot to mention the clean channel. Same EQ settings, but I do have a dedicated eq channel on the boss EQ 200 just for clean that gives probably the best clean tone I have ever heard from any amp. I have a fender twin reverb, and a 1977 Roland Jazz Chorus 120 I usually A-B with my JCM 800 for cleans, and the tone I got out of the EL34 with the eq pedal, is surprisingly better. No need for me to lug multiple amps to the gig now. Being a diehard vintage amp snob, I was very reluctant to give this a try. But wow!! I am glad I did. The vintage stuff can stay at home now where it is safe, and this will now be my gigging amp. Less to haul around to achieve great tones all in one head versuses A-B ing 2 amps, two mics in front and two channels to dial in on front of house board. This is a win for me. Never thought I would say this, and immediatley hated it until I gave it a try. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
    PS: I spent about 6 hours total, tone shapping with EQ 200 to each specific channel to achieve the tones I finally dig. TS9 on Green Channel with Overdrvive engaged, and SD1 for Red Channel no burn button. The burn will never be used. And one final tweak, I removed the front grill and took off the 5150 and EVH logo and put behind the grill. Looks a lot better estetically. Now it's a custom lol

    Ok so I just bought this amp yesterday and now I'm bummed out because I really think what you said is 100 % true even without trying it myself I hear what you're saying..I'm 56 but was looking for something different as I already have a TSL100 through a 4x12 with V30s...been playing for like ever and I'm struggling to find something decent that's not $3,000 but I guess that doesn't exist. I play blues and rock mostly with gain...any suggestions ?
    Thanks

      I would suggest maybe a Friedman BE100 that if you get lucky you can find for about $2600 used. Honestly, I wish there were lower cost options that sounded great but it’s just not out there. It’s hard to find a modern piece of gear that has that same fidelity as the vintage stuff but also packs enough gain for hard rock.

      If you want a killer hot rodded Marshall-esque type amp that has tons of character and mojo thats amazing value are Splawn amplifiers. It’s where i ended up after owning everything under the sun.(but i still kept my EVH 50 watt stealth!). Check them out.

      I don’t know much about the circuit design, so I’m not sure. I do know that people on the internet tend to get all bent out of shape over things that have absolutely nothing at all to do with the actual experience of playing the amp.

    • @rockinchippy
      @rockinchippy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reverb is very respectable but you have to balance it out depending on gain levels. I think it’s best for early VH crunch tones.

    Nice in-the-room demo! And tuned to normal tuning! I think it sounds like a perfect '80's grind amp. NOT a good modern metal chug amp like the other 5150's. Of course, that cold feel is probably from the solid state components instead of a V1 12AX7. Compared to a DSL (for example), it seems to get nicer gain and tighter low end, which is cool.

    • @rockinchippy
      @rockinchippy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t really play metal but this all seems to be perfect for it. Demos sometimes are colored by the players style. Someone who plays heavy palm muting would love this amp.

      I don’t know enough about amp design to weigh into whether it makes a difference. It doesn’t seem to be missing anything compared to any other amp I’ve played. This sounds absolutely nothing like a Marshall so if you want a Marshall, get a Marshall. Apples and oranges.

      The clean is clean as it’s supposed to be. And by it being so clean, that makes it the best kind of pedal platform.
      Effect pedals bring everything to life.

    Sounds great but usely when you have the reverb up to high in an minimum space through recording it comes off to strong and has to much trail off at the end it takes away from the actual tone of the amp you could probably set it at two or three and your recordings live would probably come out better when demonstrating a product get your jeans and people don't normally want to hear how you like it so you need to play with the reverb at low settings and high settings to give people an idea of what the range of the reverb is I'm sure it has a great trail off range we can hear that but we don't hear it at lower settings but yeah it's how you want to come across to the public I guess if trying to pitch an amp sale 🤷👍
