As we Jim Croce fans know, he died in a plane crash. My mom worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Flight Standards. One of her duties was to type up accident reports. He was a true poet with a great voice. And his band was incredible as well. Obviously the finger picking acoustic guitar in all his music seems to always be fresh and complex, even the less noticeable aspects are just perfect. This song starts with an acoustic bass and then jumps over to an electric, why? Because that's how he wanted it. That attention to minor details is why Jim Croce and the people who helped him create this art will forever remain through the songs they made.

Jim lives on through his marvelous music, with serious songs as this one. His "Photographs & Memories: His Greatest Hits" album is a must-have for any serious music lover. Every one of them tells a story, some light and fun, some deeper and inspirational-thoughtful as this one, "I Got A Name" and my personal favorite, "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" (#9, Mar. 1974). No other singer-songwriter had so many great songs in such a short time (1972-74) as Jim Croce. He will not be forgotten, no matter how many years go by since we lost him in 1973, with another sad anniversary (48 years on Sep. 20, in 19 more days), at only 30.
He was going to retire from public life after the tour ended, and become a scriptwriter for tv and movies. I imagine him writing outstanding and hilarious comedy series episodes, or deeply-serious and thoughtful drama shows that highlighted a specific type of human feeling from an event. We'll never know how much brighter he would have added to Hollywood's too-frequently dull or unmemorable episodes, whether in comedy or drama. More the pity from Sep. 20, 1973. R.I.P., Jim. You were like a rare comet that shines brilliantly and lights-up the sky for only a few months, then fades away, never to be seen again. But never forgotten!

Jim played the rhythm track very well. He was a songwriter who could accompany himself nicely. But the gorgeous lead guitar was provided by Maury Muehliesen. He was lost in the plane crash that killed Jim. Tradgedy.
listen w headphones and you will note that the electric bass doesnt come in until 1:14, after two full verses without it. i doubt many pop songs have that kind of structure.
Jim's Croce's music has played in my mind since the 1970's. I was at college when I heard of Jim's death. His music, and especially this song, has never left me.

I loved Jim Croce everyone asks where were you when Elvis died, don't get me wrong I loved Elvis but I know exactly where I was when I heard the news that Jim Croce died. I was seven months pregnant leaving a Met's game and I'm a Yankee fan. I thought I was going to have the baby right then September 20th 1973. I will never forget it.
Wow! Every time I find another song by Jim Croce I continue to be amazed at the prowess of his lyrical ability to put words together. This song speaks volumes to me as I have come out of a toxic relationship with someone whom I wasn't good enough for to keep her from cheating. This man was amazing and his songs continue to resonate.
He left us at age 30 with some of the most incredible songs...and his guitar genius partner, Maury Muehleisen was only 24. Unbelievable what they gave us in their short lives.

This is the first time I have heard this song. It describes my fourteen year marriage to a tee . If only these two could have stayed with us, many more gems would have been created !
Jim Croce was one of the best songwriters of the last 75 years. As others have said his lyrics were genius. His delivery was emotion-filled. His voice was smooth and of an unmatched quality. His death was so untimely. Had he lived he would have written so much more. I mourn his loss, even though it's been more than half a century.
This brings back so many memories when things were so much simpler, men were men, chics were chics and music was real music, god I miss the 60s and 70s.
And yes, I've often wondered how much he might have contributed in a normal lifespan, just amazing even earth shattering potential. God bless Jim Croce.
I’ll never forget the night your plane crashed. September 20,1973. I was visiting my sister in Louisiana so we heard the news right away. We cried all night. I feel the heartbreak even now.💗One of the finest song writers of your generation. Namaste
I was a freshman in college, my first month at the school and I was going to the campus record store just about every day to get my personal collection up to the size everyone else in the dorm seemed to have. I heard the news about Jim on the radio one morning and after my first class stopped in at the record store and bought a couple of his albums -- I remember how stunned the store's clerk was when I told her the news. I'd been a fan of his hits ever since "One Less Set of Footsteps," but songs like this one, "Alabama Rain," and "A Long Time Ago" really bring out the depth of Jim's songwriting talent. And yeah, I'm still listening today.
I began listening to him around the age of 14-15 and was hooked from the first play. 20 years later I can listen to these songs repeatedly and they never grow tiresome in any way, in fact I appreciate them much more in my mid 30's having had my own experience and can relate to his. The man was a gem. I hope to meet him in the next one.
I grew up listening to his music. It makes me feel so nostalgic to hear his voice. reminds me of when I used to visit my dad for the summer. Jim and the Eagles were always playing in the house.
Everytime i heard his song , it always make me want to grab my guitar , then a pencil and paper to write a song of myself. He is a brilliant Singer-Songwriter thats is so real, not fake stars (lots of them today) who sings with auto-tune for their vocal to sounds better.
Thanks for posting this. I always liked Operator & his top 10 hits, but never heard this one. I'm learning to appreciate alot of the old stuff I missed, now that I'm retired & have time for You Tube (which my kids taught me how to use). Thanks You Tube. & Thanks for posting these great songs. More please?

But now I've come to my decision
And it's a-one of the painful kind
'Cause now it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn't do

And that's the one thing I just couldn't do
'Cause baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
'Cause tables are meant for turnin'
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin'
When the people and mem'ries they join aren't the same
So I'll hope that you can find
Another who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new

And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
I love Jim Croce's, it is still as fresh and relevant today as it was so many years ago.
all jim croces songs are timeless and paint such pictures with the ly.rics and melodic genius and heis truly .missed today !!!
One of the greatest guitarists I know and listen to. I wanna learn so many of his songs, and have already learnt a couple, working on this rn. Havent seen many comments about this guys outstanding guitarist skills
Jim played the rhythm track very well. He was a songwriter who could accompany himself nicely. But the gorgeous lead guitar was provided by Maury Muehliesen. He was lost in the plane crash that killed Jim. Tradgedy.
RIP Buddy your love of music will echo into eternity
Just beautiful....
Amen. Just the intro. takes me right back about 1973.
hi
listen w headphones and you will note that the electric bass doesnt come in until 1:14, after two full verses without it. i doubt many pop songs have that kind of structure.
so so so love the sound of his guitar
Jim's Croce's music has played in my mind since the 1970's. I was at college when I heard of Jim's death. His music, and especially this song, has never left me.
I herd this song for the first time when I was in the 10th Grade, I've been a fan ever sine, Another incredible talent that was taken from us too early
That voice, unique
Simply a perfect example of the songwriter’s art. Intimate, exquisitely melodic, and with words that communicate perfectly without getting in the way.
When I hear this song, i just think of memories. I really want a boyfriend like the romances ive had before. I really really do. I hope i get one. I've been single for what feels like forever
onliner10000 sure you'll build a lot better memories with a great guy in future (Y)
+Nova200....Join your local church. You don't have to be overly religious to go. Lots of good people go there and you would be surprised how many are single! I'm married 48 years and my wife and i met there....Neither of of were "bar type" of people. Not all people who go there are up to no good but many are. Besides, personally when i shop for meat i prefer Shop-Rite...lol.....I never once cheated on my wife. She's been good to me and i try to honor her loyalty in kind. Like Paul Newman once said: "Why go out for hamburger when i have steak at home".......Good luck to you
Did you ever get a boyfriend? We need to know. :-)
R.I.P. Jim you will always be remembered.
I discovered Jim Croce in the summer of 89 I was 18 years old!! unbelievable talent I love all his songs!!
Another one of his great lines: "Nobody ever had a rainbow, baby until he had the rain". From the song "Tomorrow's Gonna Be A Brighter Day".
Hoy, en el aniversario de su partida, lo recuerdo escuchando esta maravilla de 3 minutos.
Extraordinario artista, cuánto se lo extraña.
Inesquecível
Cheating is a lot more about what's going on inside the cheater. Once you know that it kind of puts things in perspective. I pray healing for you.
All of Croce's songs are stories... and it's beautiful
He left us at age 30 with some of the most incredible songs...and his guitar genius partner, Maury Muehleisen was only 24. Unbelievable what they gave us in their short lives.
Such a beautiful song from my favorite artist/singer/song writer from my teenager past....
I grew up on this and I miss it even though its sad
“The noble heart will find no shortage of places to offer itself in martyrdom, but you cannot die on every battlefield.” ~ Duncan Sinclair, from The Outcast Highlander”
.
"Lover's Cross"
I guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
Now I've come to my decision
And its a-one of the painful kind
'Cause now it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn't do
But baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
You really gotta hand it to ya
'Cause girl you really tried
But for ev'ry time that we spent laughin'
There were two times that I cried
And you were tryin' to make me your martyr
And that's the one thing I just couldn't do
'Cause baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
'Cause tables are meant for turnin'
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin'
When the people and mem'ries they join aren't the same
Still I hope that you can find another
Who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
'Cause tables are meant for turnin'
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin'
When the people and mem'ries they join aren't the same
But I hope that you can find another
Who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

great quote
This is the first time I have heard this song. It describes my fourteen year marriage to a tee . If only these two could have stayed with us, many more gems would have been created !
My sweet Christ! This song is a revelation. God bless Jim Croce.
My personal Absolute Favorite Jim Croce song of all
😊😊😊
Jim Croce was one of the best songwriters of the last 75 years. As others have said his lyrics were genius. His delivery was emotion-filled. His voice was smooth and of an unmatched quality. His death was so untimely. Had he lived he would have written so much more. I mourn his loss, even though it's been more than half a century.
Gone too soon legend!
This brings back so many memories when things were so much simpler, men were men, chics were chics and music was real music, god I miss the 60s and 70s.
I'm ashamed it took Pandora for me to hear this, truly fantastic and moving
And yes, I've often wondered how much he might have contributed in a normal lifespan, just amazing even earth shattering potential. God bless Jim Croce.
magnifico!!!
Unbelievably wonderful
🥀Beautiful Sad Song! Thanks for posting this song it's priceless🥀✌🥀
master piece ... perfect
Same here... Everything will be ok
Vinile proveniente dall'America.....🎸🎸🎸💕💕💕 negli anni 75, stupendo🎸🎤❤🎼
A wonderful songwriter. His wife Ingrid is a beautiful soul. Listen to his son's music, AJ Croce
Everytime i heard his song , it always make me want to grab my guitar , then a pencil and paper to write a song of myself. He is a brilliant Singer-Songwriter thats is so real, not fake stars (lots of them today) who sings with auto-tune for their vocal to sounds better.
Why isn't this as famous, or more than time in a bottle
Great song by a great singer!!
Really "Great Song Writing" here with Jim Croce....I hadn't heard this one in years...a True Gem from the great Jim Croce (RIP) 💯🤘✍
No one could write a love song like Jim did ! I love you Jim !
My all time favorite song writer. Nothing but love for Jim.
What amazing times those were with Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, John Denver, Donovan, and Dylan writing their songs! What happened?
All of these are legends!!
Timeless...seems as though he knew he would not be blessed with a long life and was writing and singing songs to his wife and to us, his fans who love him still...
One great singer/songwriter, tragically gone way to young
