This reminds me of my sister. She always cracked when Jim, "You can keep the dime." Today's generation will never understand that line. I miss you so much sis! She passed in 2018.
Where did theses songs go? I mean these days it all about sex drugs and money. 40 years ago it told lessons, stories, and events. People should understand me and these people listening to this song. I’m a boy who likes old music me and my dad always listen to Jim Croce, cat stevens, Harry chapin, jimmy, and james Taylor. Who wants this music back?
There are still incredibly talented artists today, just as there were not so great songs in the past. You can cherry pick from any era and say nothing is like it because it's the best. Open up.
@@KittyforPeaceThat's true, but also the lyrics are good, poetic with a full story, and fits well with the nuanced singing. The music is also layered, the small changes in repetitions express changes in mood, the upbeat song manages to express a feeling of incredible sadness in a subdued but not sentimental way, like his call to the operator.
The one and only Jim Croce, never be another like him; his music is timeless, his songs are just as fresh today as they were 40 years ago...(RIP) Jim....
Oi oi let’s have a big shout out for Jim’s backing singer and guitarist Maury Muehleisen. His playing and harmonising helped Jim enormously to become the brilliant act that he was 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Met his sister Mary and younger brother at a tribute concert for Jim and Maury at Upper Darby High School some 10 years back... lovely family he had. Miss you Jim and Maury.🙏🏼🕯️🙏🏼
Thank you for this comment. The taste of his writing and playing is rare for anyone. To think that he was only 24 years old at the time of his death and obviously younger when writing and playing this stuff is mesmerizing. What a tragedy it was to lose Jim and Maury.
Criminally-underrated/-underappreciated singer-songwriter. This is my favorite song by him -- a moving little tune about trying to get over a relationship. Rest in peace, Jim, and thanks for the music.
Operator Oh. Could you help me place this call? 'Cause I can't read the number That you just gave me There's something in my eyes You know it happens every time I think about the love That I thought would save me As a young boy I listened to this song, but had not lived enough to understand the depth and the emotions of its lyrics. The years we’ll they pass-by for all of us and life, well ,“Life Happens”, now older when I listen to these same lyrics, well, there’s something in my eyes, you know it happens every time. Jim just sat there, smiled and played and sang, no big production, he just sang and we listened. I believe that the Good Lord made Jim Croce so humanity could get a glimpse of the greatness of His creation, and then in the blink of an eye, he took him back to Heaven. What a talent Jim was, pure genius, LEGEND.
I had always known the main line, “Operator, would you help me place this call?” but had never listened to the song closely until recently when I let it play all the way through. The lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks because they described the exact feelings I still have over 3 years since my last relationship ended in betrayal and heartbreak. I thank God for Croce and other musicians who can get to the core of emotion in such a beautiful and artistic way. Needless to say by the end of the song I was weeping while singing along and the “that’s not the way it feels” line still hits hard in the gut every time that I listen to it. Just a beautiful song! 💛
Jim had such a mature understanding of life that, to me, far exceeds his mere 30 years life with us. I was 21 when he died, and his music affects me today as much as it di when it was new to us. He was a one-off and will never be forgotten. RIP Jim, 50 years ago this year, and yet, still, 50 years later, I love listening to his songs.
I wish my words could convince myself that it just wasn't real...everyone who has experienced betrayal and heartbreak understand this line completely. The most beautiful words to express emotional pain ever penned.
IM LISTENING TO IN JIM CROCE'S SONG. IN MEMORY OF MY LATE BROTHER JOHNNY. R.I.P. BECAUSE THIS WAS HIS FAVORITE SINGER. ALSO I LIKE ALL HIS SONGS. I MISS HIM ALOT.
This song brings back memories of my childhood, riding in my father's 1968 Dodge Dart Swinger to spend all day helping him at the laundromat that he co-owned with my uncle back in the early-to-mid 70s..he'd always play this 8-track tape on those trips every other Saturday.
Unbelievable talent!! Gone too soon. I always thought to myself, if he lived longer, how good would his albums be.? Then I put on Operator and say he left more than enough!! RIP LEGEND S/S
Lyrics Operator, well could you help me place this call? That battle of heartache... the want to prove to them that you're fine even though you feel broken. Best step is to not make the call and make the peace within yourself
Of course heartbreak can be expected to happen from a lover. But not to forget, you don't expect one of your good friends to be the one to cross your friendship. (With my best ol' ex-friend Ray).
I grew up on Jim Croce music and it brings back so many memories some good some bad but memories all the same. Being a musician I can really respect his song writing skills and I have no doubt he would be a super star had he lived! RIP my musical friend.
This is what you call a timeless classic. I can't put a finger around his style of music making. It can be put under a certain generic label of music genre. Mystifying and perplexing indeed, especially 'Time in a bottle'.
